How to migrate to new phone?

So, I think I may be getting an LG Thrill tomorrow. I'm trying to prepare the transfer process so it goes smoothly tomorrow.

I have my contacts synced with gmail, so those are going to transfer easily.
My pictures, I can just copy paste.
My texts conversations, i'm assuming i will lose.
My apps are the thing i'm most concerned with.

I'm aware that if i go to "my apps" in the market, I will theoretically see a list of all my apps (free and purchased)
I have an sd card though, so I want to use that for transferring apps if possible. Can someone tell me how this process works? I know how to transfer apps to my sd card, but I'm not sure what happens once i put that card into the new, fresh phone. Any tips on this, or other issues I may encounter? This is my first android->android upgrade.
