[How-to][NEW VERSION] Run Nookie Froyo off SD card

after pushing the market apps all I get is constant Force Close's on everything, completely unuseable. All the apps are there but I cant run anything, forces closes at boot and then when anything is run! Any suggestions?

I am having a really hard time getting Nookie Froyo running on an SD card. I can get it to boot, but I sometimes boot and immediately get all kinds of crashes (force close) on bluetooth, messaging, google framework, and others. I rebooted, and now my nook wont boot at all from SD. It hangs when "Android" comes up on the left side of the screen. I have followed the directions (several times) and managed to get as far as having a few apps installed, but now its hung again. I think I may try and see if Honeycomb is any more stable....any thoughts?

Honeycomb is neat, and has some flashy little bells and whistles, but remember, it was built from a preview SDK, not even the full version, so it's definitely not a full-on stable platform yet. I'd suggest re-flashing your card and trying over again with Nookie.

So what you are saying is, to make this easier, I should use a 2nd SD card:
I should boot up nookie using the 1st SD card.
Once it is loaded, take out that SD card and put in the 2nd SD card.
Run Titanium and backup all files.
Flash new IMG of updated nookie to 1st SD card.
Restart the NC with the now updated nookie version.
Install Market then Titanium again.
Eject 1st SD card so that I can put in 2nd SD card which I assume will have the backup files for Titanium.
Run Titanium and have it restore.

Anything in there obviously wrong?

Any time you flash something over a drive, it's going to replace it. Most programs warn/state that before you start. The best way is to have a card that you use for your flashing, and a second card that you use as your SD storeage after you're all mounted. If you're using the same card, you can do your backup, copy the backup data to your computer, flash your image, and then put your backup data back onto the newly flashed card, just like you would in moving files around on any external hard drive.

Thanks for the tip...I think I am going to stick with Nookie Froyo 0.5.9 but I am having issues.

I get the img file over to the SD card using Win32 Disk Imager. Then I boot the Nook. Sometimes, immediately after burning the SD image, I get tons of force close events on boot. Other times, after re-burning the image, I get no crashes. There is no difference in what I am doing....just different results! Frustrating!

Once I get a good boot, I then try to use ADB to transfer the gapps over. Again, sometimes it works, and sometimes after pushing and rebooting, my Nook hangs (at the point where "Android" shows up sideways on the left).

I got as far as getting the Kindle app working, but I tried loading Angry Birds and AVR Remote, and the downloads failed, upon rebooting, my Nook freezes.

So...I am starting over for the dozenth time....any hints, tips? HELP!!! :)

I can't imagine there being anything wrong with the IMG file. If it is downloading and unzipping without any errors.

What kind of SD card are you using? If it is a slower card then that would probably be the problem. I'm using a class 4 card and I notice a lot of slow downs. They recommend at least a class 6 card but I bought a class 10 through ebay I am waiting on.

Do you see somewhere on your microSD card a number with a small circle around it? That tells you the class of your card.

phew. made it to the other side - and it works! thanks for all of the great tips & links to other great tips. i ran into many of the problems that others have come across but was able to work through them.

one question though - the bundle of google apps installed thru ADB brings along Google Voice & i had seen a tag on one of the nookie threads about using voice to send SMS from the nook.

when i try to setup voice on the nook though it asks which phone # the device uses (the only one in my voice account is my mobile number for my EVO). am i missing something or are we limited to the browser version of voice? do we use our 'real' mobile #?

THANKS!

Noobie Question

I like my NC and use it for reading and net. I have a few books on it I have purchased.

My question is if you are running off a microSD card and mess it up, do you just remove the microSD card and you are back to square one? I don't want to mess up a Christmas present and have to explain it to my wife.

I'm using a Patriot brand 16GB Class 10 card. I started with a stock nook 1.0.1, then I rooted using autonooter, then followed the instructions for installing Nookie from this thread. I did notice that there is a Nookie 0.6.6 out now, I tried that, and I am still getting tons of force close events. I have no idea whatsoever what the hell is going on.

will this mess up the sd card for future use in computers? or does it not effect the physical card at all?

thanks a lot for all the work on this!

Thanks for a great post. However, though I've down loaded and installed it I can't seem to make a USB commection with the Nook. Looks like USB friver is needed but I don't know what one to use. My PC OS is Win 7 64 bit.
Any recommendations?

I know this is a stupid question but in the first line of code
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system
is the o the number zero or the letter o?
Thanks in advance.

The letter o. You can always just copy/paste when in doubt.

hoping for some input on this - thanks

Thanks Will for all your work on our behalf.
There is a way to paste into a command Prompt window?
Thanks again.
Philn

After copying the command as it is posted in the op go to the command prompt, right click and select paste. Works that way on windows 7 at least.

Ok, I started from scratch using a different computer this time. Burned the latest Nookie Froyo 0.6.7 to my SD card, booted up, and guess what? Immediately after booting a menu comes up asking me to select Launcher or SoftKeys to perform an action. When I press "launcher", I get everything from the calendar to messaging to the launcher itself force closing on me. Is anyone else having this problem?

The one that keeps popping up is com.android.phone, it repeatedly crashes and wont let me do much of anything in this state.
