[How To] One-Click Root Your Droid X [Official 2.2 OTA]

STOP THE PRESSES! I got it to work finally!

What I did:

Unplug the Droid from your computer. Switch to PC mode. Notification blind> USB connection> PC mode.
And then go to USB debugging. Settings> Applications> Development> USB debugging.

What seems to be happening, at least in my case, was putting the phone in Charge mode would allow for USB debugging. Switching it to PC mode would not. In reality it is, it is just not showing in the notification blind. But If you are already in Charge mode, with debugging turned on, and then switch it to PC mode, the debugging isn't recognized by the OS. What I did was, once I switched from Charge mode to PC mode, I then went back and turned debugging off and then back on. This shows that it has been turned back on in the notification blind.

After that, I followed all the steps and ran the script in terminal. (I'm using Ubuntu)
It stays at "adb reset" screen for about 8 minutes. [Reset] and then it ran some other code and BAM! I hope this at least helps someone because I got pretty frustrated with it. :D

Ok, very new to this.

First (possibly stupid) question...what is the Android SDK package that I'm supposed to move into C drive (and do I just drag and drop it in C) and where do I get it from?

I downloaded from the link before step 1, unzipped it and got a dorootforwindows folder with 5 files in it.

No offense, but you don't sound like someone who should be rooting his or her phone.

Why are you rooting? What do you plan to do with the phone once you're done? Have you downloaded the 2.2 SBF yet?

I'm only doing it for the free wi-fi. No custom roms or anything else. Just following the steps in the layout on the OP.

I have not downloaded 2.2 sbf. Is that needed (I am running 2.2 on my DX).

Ok. Here is a question for all you experienced people. I have root on my Droid x thru this method. I downloaded ROM Manager and the premium license from the market. I went into ROM Manager to do a Backup of my system. When I click to to reboot into recovery to do the backup, it will not go into recovery at all. All it does is reboot the phone just as if you turned in off and back on. No recovery menu, nothing. I also flashed the Clockworkmod recovery first. Would appreciate any help on how to fix this. Thank you.

You need to bootstrap the recovery through Koush's bootstrap program. Available on the market for $2 I think.

This method (see OP - Windows) worked great for me. I've owned a number of Android devices over the last year and a half and hadn't felt comfortable rooting. I finally got upgrade eligibility on my wife's line so I figured I'd give it a shot. Turned out to be much easier and far less stressful than I anticipated. Played around with some killer aps and various backup/restore tools. Had a heck of a lot of fun with it. Now my plan for tonight is drinking beer, flashing the stock 2.2 back on it, reformatting everything as if I'm just pulling it out of the box for the first time. Rooting has been a killer learning opportunity for me to learn a lot of stuff. I assume tonight's restore process will be the same. Tomorrow I will wake up a smarter man (who happens to have a killer headache).

I followed the steps here: Easier 1-2-3 Droid 2 Root for Windows / Linux / Mac - xda-developers

All is well, but it's the old superuser version. I checked this out: [APP] Superuser 2.3.6.1 - Now on the Market [2010-09-05] - xda-developers
but am unsure of how to correctly implement this for the droidX, also thanks to all if these scripts I've not had to type any code on windows before.

Can anyone give me a hand so I (we) can use the latest superuser version?

Superuser is actually a program that is available in the Market for free - just do a search and you'll find it.

Ya, I know this. The problem is you can't just install the market version if the older version is already on the device....

Rooted on the first try :) awesome although i did run into the device not connecting at first but had to change it back and forth from charge only to pc mode and then check debugging after my phone restarted

You could adb on your computer to remove superuser.apk from /system/app and then install the market version.

Ok, well I'm sure this isn't the correct way to go about getting the newer version, but the following worked:

I downloaded this file here. I had previously used this method for root, so what I did was overwrite the superuser.apk and su file in the older instructions, with the newer download, for root. I then unrooted and re-rooted. I now finally have the latest superuser version. I did not try to get the market version because it's the same as the downloaded one and I really don't have anymore time to mess with stuff today.

Removed superuser.apk via root explorer, market version still fails installation.

Even though its removed it still must be uninstalled to install the market version. Use this in adb

adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.noshufou.android.su

After that then you will be able to install the market version and update su binaries
