How to put a smartphone on a legacy plan without a data plan (BRV required)

Yes it should work. I am stuck with UDP and a 2 year data requirement because of adding an iphone line to get a new UDP line. Which isn't really a bad thing, I use the brv as my home Internet. It runs smoother than my twc 50/5 service, even though Verizon only advertises 5-12 down

Hi, I don't mean to dig up an old post, but I have about 3 dumb phones that i want to switch to smartphones but without the data plans. I was wondering if doing this would affect my text messages as I have 250 messages allowance on one line (I have no ideas what's the difference between sms, mms and all that).

So does the router have to be in service or connected in anyways for this trick to work? If not, can you just buy one and return it to the store after you are done?

Many thanks, especially to the OP and Mr. Toad for pointing me to this post.

As per the screen shot in the op, messages are blocked as well. You can return the brv once done, but you would have to pay restocking fee

Thanks for your reply- so the data plan and messages are together right? you can not go back and re-activate just the message alone?

also I can use the router out of the box right? I don't have to activate or enroll in any service by verizon? I just saw some refurbished unit on ebay which i guess is not too bad considering the price but wonder if they would work too.

I don't know if you can add messages back on afterwards. You need to check closely as doing so may also add on a data plan. Read the screen very carefully. It should look similar to what is in the op, albeit with different items.

As for the brv, you don't have to do anything, just pop in the active Verizon 4GLTE micro sim

I have family share plan. 2 lines have UDP. The other 2 lines are dumbphones with no data plans.
All lines share one unlimited texting plan($30 extra per month)

If I follow your method, do you think that will affect the texting on that line?

Thanks! :)

The response is the same as above.

Hi, thank you for your instructions. I decided to order a router just to try this. Hope everything will go smoothly. I will post the result and hope for your input in case of any difficulties.
so this router takes a micro-sim right? that's way I don't need to buy an adapter. Thank you again!

It does use a micro sim

Just got it today. I took out the battery cover (at the bottom of the router) and saw 6 devious looking screws. What do you use to open them? Thanks!

Torx T6 screw driver. It is in the first paragraph of the original post.

Thank you so much for your help, dpham00 and Mr Toad. I did lose my text message on the line that I have it, but it looks like I don't have data plan anymore. Now I'm anxiously waiting for my next bill to come. I hope Verizon won't bill me otherwise (I just activated smartphones and dropped the data plan on the same day, for 3 lines).

Keep us posted this cycle and the next.. (two billing cycles)
