how to put my phone in silent mode?

I cant believe how hard it is to do such a basic function on my Nexus 6P. if I slide down the volume all the way to the left it becomes vibrate, what if I wanna sleep and I don't want anything to go off except the alarm?? how to do this?

Also, I figured out how to adjust the do not disturb options but how to activate the DND mode?

Hi, DND is located in your settings menu, it is also a quick toggle when you swipe down the notification panel with both fingers. Also when you press the volume down key and it reaches vibrate, press it down again and this will activate DND (aka silent)
