Having a samsung s1 captivate i897 (yes OLD) at&t branded cell phone that was 100% paid for, but never unlocked back in the day.

Trying to unlock now to use as a second line, but REFUSES TO ACCEPT the codes from AT&T.

The phone is useless if left on at&t (whose reception sucks in the big city and doesn't even work in the house) and i've got one attempt left to try to input the right code - with no idea why it hasn't worked so far.

If I could reset the carrier unlock limit using root or something else, this would make it alot easier of course. I'm very new to all this phone modification stuff btw.

You mean the number of tries to unlock it? You need the PUK code (also from AT&T). Bring it to the store, ask them to put the PUK code into it, then the unlock code.
