thanks, i got that far and was able access cwm one time but i can't access it again for some reason. it seems odd and super user is installed so im pretty sure i have root but now im trying to flash the nowiz rom but cant get back into cwm, has anyone ever heard of this?

Did you flash the "Root from Recovery" zip that Clocks was referring to? If you don't, you won't be able to enter CWM once you boot into the ROM. Flashing the zip makes CWM the default recovery.

In the link that Clocks posted, go about halfway down the page until you see the word "Warning" in red text.

Any of you have a Macbook and running VMware on their laptops? I'm trying to run windows on VMware and i'm getting the "problem installing the hardware: samsung mobile MTP device"

Does it have something to do with the fact that i downloaded that darn update that killed the search stuff???

Is it okay to flash the "Root from recovery" file to make CWM the default recovery even if i'm already rooted?

I got into CWM once and was able to root, but didin't flash the "Root from Recovery" file and I am unable to get back into CWM unless I flash it from Odin or boot into it from Rom Manager.

THE DOWNLOAD IS FOR VERIZON!!!! NOT FOR SPRINT!!! WHEN THE LINK SAYS ITS FOR SPRINT. EITHER YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING OR YOU'RE NOT ON THE HOME TEAM!!! WTF!!!! I ALMOST BRICKED MY PHONE!!! I had to take it to a tech would then told me.. yeah.. uh this is a verizon kernel bro. Cost me $30 to have my brand new S3 brought back from the dead. I don't supposed the one who posted that link would like to pay my repair bill???

You're a . When you do a hack/mod on your phone, it is implied that it is "at your own risk".

Yes I flashed the zip

I found an error with the directions. You must have superuser file copied to your phone prior to flashing recovery in Odin. Your steps show to flash Odin first.

If your phone came out of the box up to date it will detect custom recovery upon boot and overwrite your newly flashed CWM with the stock recovery. To get recovery to stick, you must stop it from rebooting.

Super User must be flashed before your phone reboots. There are two methods to do this. I prefer method 2

Method 1:
Immediately after Odin Completes, pull your battery. You have to be fast or you will lose recovery. Then put your battery back in and then boot into recover and flash superuser.

Method 2:
Uncheck the Auto Reboot in Odin. When you do this it won't give you the passed until after you unplug your device. So you will have to make sure it is complete. I think it will say disconnected or complete in the message block. Remove and reinsert your battery. Then boot into recovery and flash superuser.

Like I said I prefer the 2nd way as you don't have to worry about being fast and it will stick the first time. I have done Method 1 as many as 3 times before I got the battery out in time. But then, I'm older and probably slower than you.

This might be a silly question, but if I root, can I flash an older rom like stock gingerbread? I do not like ICS, because adobe flash is horrible on it.

Not unless some developer builds a gingerbread Rom for your phone. As of now, there are none. You can go to xda forum and ask some developers there if they could help but I'm not sure what you kind of response you would get. I have no issues with flash on my phone. What's it doing?

Be nice if OP was updated to account for those with updated phones.
Been trying Skunks method#2... still doesn't work.

Looks like it "may" be working as when I do battery pull and vol up, power, home button it flashes in blue letter "recovery booting" but then ends up rebooting like normal

*Found these directions to work and more noob-friendly

You should try the no flash count method it works every time because it's rooted before cwm is installed.

My phone doesn't go into Clockworkmod recovery mode when i hold down volume up/center home/power buttons. Am I missing something here? I went through the Odin process and came through with a pass, but am stuck at the next step.

Did you UNCHECK "Auto Reboot" in Odin ?
When it finishes Pull out your battery. DO NOT LET THE PHONE START ON IT'S OWN.
Put your battery back in.
Press and hold Volume Up/Home/Power Button
You MUST release all 3 buttons as soon as you see Samsung.
It should boot to CWM. If you hold the buttons too long your phone will start normally.

I recommend flashing this cwm recovery in Odin. Click Here to download

Place this version of superuser on your external sdcard and flash it in CWM once in recovery. Click here to download If you use any other version your phone will overwrite the recovery with the stock recovery when it boots. This is why the superuser file that I posted must be flashed in cwm before the 1st boot. It not only installs the superuser, it also deletes the two files that tells the phone to reinstall stock recovery at every reboot.
