Jakon325 - just keep trying. Took me few tries as well. but eventually i got #

problems w adb shell

Worked fine for a while without a hitch but when I type in adb shell at the cmd window I get the message. "Error: more than one device and emulator"'
I did get a # sign one time. I wonder if I accidentally rooted it twice
SU also says I need to reboot in recovery mode and flash binary. I don't know how to fix this. All adb commands result in the same error. Should I factory reset my phone? Thanks for all your hard work btw.

I just rooted my wife's Optimus last night and I tried about 10 times at the point where you are stuck.

What finially worked was I let it sit for almost 15min after the adb disconnect then tried again and I got the # prompt

Thank you!!!!

Trying this real soon!!!

As soon as I get out of class!!

I hope it works!

Only problem is... I don't know what to do with a rooted phone haha, I will figure it out though, I mean, I am a computer science major, I should be able to do quite a bit.

And get this, I can take a class called "Development for Mobile Devices"

I hate being so newb =[

amidoingitwrong?

If you are having that much trouble with it why not resort to "z4root" I believe it was taken off of the Market but there are other forums and websites that you could use to find it;)

v9 Problems

I have software version 9 as I just got the phone during the one week, get it for free from Sprint starting on Cyber Monday. I had a hero before and happily tried just about every rom out there for it. And as such, I am not a newbie to rooting or adb.

It appears that this phone is just problematic in the rooting area. I have tried at least two dozen times using various pc's to attempt the root. I have tried on Vista Home Premium, XP SP3, Windows Server 2008 r2, and Windows 7 Ultimate, and also Maverick Meerkat(Ubuntu10.10). I have tried multiple downloads of the rageagainstthecage, su, busybox download.

I get through the instructions to the point where I should wait for a couple minutes. Everything is fine here. I have tried waiting 30 minutes and I still get the same result. I have tried killing the adb process after it reboots and gives me a prompt in the command again, in both Linux and Windows.

Yes, my screen has been unlocked and I have typed adb shell, and every time I get $, not #.

Someone else, has got to be having the same problems that I have been having. I know I am not the only one that is having problems with Version 9 on the Optimus S.

Oh, by the way I have used z4root and it attempts to apply root priveledges. After it refers to applying the exploit, the phone simply reboots. Is version 9 the problem? I haven't loaded hardly anything on the phone yet. The Hotspot widget and Angry Birds is about it.

Can anyone help?

V9 is not the problem. I was able to do it after 3-4 tries running XP sp3 inside vmware fusion on mac

Strange, so could it be just my phone in particular? I don't know, I feel that I have tried everything.

When you applied the Z4Root and after it restarted did you open Z4Root again? I'm curious because if you apply the root, and it restarts itself you should have it rooted and Z4Root should tell you this.

It's not like you get a notification pop-up from the Android O.S. that tells you that you've rooted your device it just happens....IF you follow the steps. Also I've noticed that you've tried every O.S. but Mac....

If all else fails totally reset your phone and start all over again.

unnggghh

I posted an earlier thread about my adb bringing up an error for having multiple devices or emulators. I try to use shell and the error comes up every time. I have tried "adb emu exit". this just says there is no emulator running. My deductive reasoning skills tell me that the error then lies in multiple devices. I got a # once, but it changed back into a $ and so I ran the rooting process again. I am thinking that I should factory reset my phone. My question is does this reverse the rooting process? I think I rooted it twice... This is probably a simple question. I am completely new at this. Just for reference though my phone is an optimus S v9 and it was working like a dream until all this happened. I can still use my phone as USB connected device, but am unable to tether via easy tether (which seconds before adb shell stopped working was just fine).

Yes, I have tried running z4root and the first thing i do when the phone loads is go back to z4root, and the only option I get is to root again. I have also installed setCPU, which on loading, will let you know if you are rooted.

I did have a rooted CDMA Hero since somewhere around Thanksgiving last year, so I have an idea about rooting and adb as stated in an earlier post. I guess I will keep trying, several times a day, allowing for more time for the phone to sit, or maybe faster. Who knows; Any ideas are more than welcome, maybe I have a funked up phone, another mystery.

Ok, I gotta swap phones with the wife for a bit. But when I went to reset mine I got stuck in the recovery boot loop of hell. Any clue what I need to do?

Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to just take the phone to a Sprint service location and tell them you are having rebooting issues....ask them to reload the O.S. and start from that point.

There is obviously something thats preventing you from rooting...which isn't rooting related or user related. :'(

I finally got it. In the instructions, it tells us to wait for a couple minutes after running rageagainstthecage. I started noticing that the adb server rebooted twice after rage ran. I figured heck, might as well give it a try getting into adb between adb server reboots. It worked...I got root.

I've never rooted any phones so admittedly I'm pretty ignorant about this whole process. I've read the instructions on how to root and it seems simple enough. However I have a question that I didn't see addressed in the instructions....

How easy is it to revert back to the stock unrooted rom? If by chance I needed to take my phone back to sprint or if I wanted to sell it is the rooting permanant? What are the odds that attempting a root job will brick the phone?

here's one of the bookmarks I saved. i think it's got all the info you need. i don't see how you could possibly brick the phone from rooting alone. as always with all 'unapproved' tweaks, the responsibility is the user's alone.

Hey guys, thanks for the walkthrough OP. One thing is missing though. In the new Android SDK they put the adb files in the "platform tools" folder and not in the original "tools" folder.
This article here helped me figure that out, which is one of the problems i was stuck on for a few hours.

How To: Set Up ADB/USB Drivers for Android Devices | TheUnlockr

Please update the original post as an optional issue, the adb tools might be in the 'platform tools' folder instead of the 'tools' folder.
