Successfull Root !

After a week of trying I finally got to root. Like many others, I kept getting $ after rageagainstthecage step. I then waited 15 minutes before typing "adb shell" and pressing enter. And there it was--- # .

Thanks to all who contributed. Game On !

Cycle Twice

@something15525 @crackle

Wait for it to cycle once and have adb shell in the command prompt (Copy, paste if you have to). Press enter right after the first cycle. I had tried every which way from Sunday, and that was the only thing that ended up working for me.

Hello,

I just picked up the Optimus S for the wife and wanted to know if this root will work with the latest update. It came with Swype installed so I assume it was loaded with the latest update.....

Thanks!

Yes, it will work with v8 or v9 (the latest update).

Thanks! This did the trick. It took a few times to get the timing right but ultimately I got the # shell prompt.

I have tried this at least 20 times with no success.

I wonder if LG updated the kernel? Mine is 2.6.32.9 lg@android-build #2

Any hints would be very appreciated

Can someone tell me how I can go back to complete stock? I want to keep my root and custom recovery. I just want a clean slate to start over with. I read somewhere that people were bricking their phones using the settings menu to do a factory reset.

when i do this in cmd 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I get the adb not found error when i try run the ddms file to take a screen shot.

You are probably in the wrong folder. THe instructions say to go to /tools to use ADB...the new SDK has adb under /platform-tools. So cd c:\{your SDK folder}\platform-tools and then try again.

Yep. Just as shortyjacobs said u need to be in the correct directory first to run shell. Start from step one and get to that folder to run shell. I would type it right in here if I wasn't on my phone.

oh great.. i think i messed up my phone. i installed the thunder-rom and everything works okay but i used a wrong email address and decided to remove it by clearing everything through the privacy clear settings where it resets your phone to factory defaults. after i did that now it keeps rebooting into the recovery menu. i tried reflashing and it just keeps going to the system recovery menu.. what could i have done wrong?

I just read in another post here that resetting to factory defaults from the settings menu bricks the phone in ThundeROM.

BRICK Warning

To be more clear, once anyone has flashed a custom recovery, they can not use the option in the settings menu of the current ROM's or even the stock OS, to do a factory reset. It WILL BRICK the phone. At least, on the Optimus S for the time being.

Those that want to clear the phone and do a fresh install of a custom ROM, can do that through the custom recovery, see here.

Those that want to return the phone to complete stock including removing the custom recovery, follow the directions here.

Everyone with "$" issues after rooting with z4root should check devilspy's post on page 36. Typing "su" in the adb shell prompt worked great!

Thanks to everyone for their work and postings. With everyone working together, seemingly rare issues can even be solved!

imo the factory reset option should be disabled (greyed out, whatever) in thundeROM considering how detrimental things could get afterward.

$ issues

ok i have tried multiple times on my optimus S

all i ever seem to receive from adb shell is $
no# just $
i cant find z4root in the app store....
though i found a .apk file,what to do with it from there? idk lol

its always after the busybox command,the files are in the correct folder i have everything i need to get started so whats the matter?

apk files are the installers for applications on android. Use a file manager on android to open the file and it will give you the option to install. I would learn it the long way though, it will probably come in handy in the future.

$ issues

yeah,well i have continued trying since that last post,to no avail

it will simply spit back $ not #

i waited 15min once...
so im going to either need some advice or z4root is the only way to go with a su command

i mean i would do the long way~but its not working so lolz
i rooted a palm pre is that counts for anything~but frankly rooting the phone is the ultimate goal(to add roms and go from there)

so heres my issue
after the first go through with adb shell and after typing ./rageagainstthecage i get a nice mash of wanting to donate and all that fun stuff
then it says restarting adb server logon to your desktop?....so its asking to logout of my windows session then back in?...ummmm its inspecific so i have no idea what it want
regardless i let it sit for a good 10-15mins then came back(at this point it had re-directed itself back to the start C:\android\platform-tools
hi5 good progress right?
apparently not, i typed in adb shell its response?
$
....fffffffffffffffffff
i tried continuing cause what the heck why not try lol,nada
su is permission denied
so is adb(just adb while in adb shell)

if anyone can help me that would be stellar~if not point me in the right direction for z4root and .apk file installation
(i think its usbmode>drag and drop it in downloads folder>get a file manager app?>happy face ur phones rooted)though im sure by file manager,you mean a 3rd party program,(a name would be of the awesome<.<)

anyways thanks for any help you guys can provide :D
im stuck in the mud-.-
