[How to] Root without tripping flash counter!

It looks like I've got myself rooted... but adb shell doesn't want to recognize my device.... I've installed the samsung kies drivers and so on, but I can't get the recovery on my device... anyone think they can help?

EDIT...

I don't get it, every file I've downloaded for clockwork is already an image file... I can't unzip these files... am I doing something wrong?

EDIT 2....

Did I do something wrong? Once I rooted my phone it updated... was I suppose to pull the battery?
You do have usb debugging enabled, right? If it's already an img file then you don't need to unzip. If you accepted the OTA, bad news. You should flash back to UCALEM via Odin before proceeding.

Thank you!!!! Debug mode.... why didn't I think of that! I'm done, well with rooting and getting clockworkmod on my GS3!

Thank you all!!!!!

Loving it! Google Voice is Excellent! Now if I could only get the jelly bean lock screen on my GS3! :) Research time!

I used this method to flash the original ROM with root over a CWM boot recovery rooted 4.0.3 ICS, and it worked perfectly. I now have the latest version of AT&T ICS 4.0.4 and root. Just make sure you have downloaded and installed the Samsung SIII USB drivers to your computer so that Odin can see your phone.

Next up to try is Triangle Away.

Im trying to do this and its been two hours and still saying system.img.ext4. Does it takes that long? How long should I wait before unplugging it.

OK I must be doing something wrong. How do I extract the "stock_root67.tar"?
What I downloaded was "stock_root67.7z" this is not extractable via winzip. At least not on my PC.

First and foremost, all credit goes to mrRobinson of XDA for posting this wonderful tutorial

First, download the stock Odin tar file w/rooted system image injected into it

Odin tar
md5sum: 653fac8617dff19e58968d173d5ffbf6

Next, extract the stock_root67.tar from the file you downloaded.
Put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
Once in odin click the PDA field and select the stock_root67.tar you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and when done let phone reboot.

If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc., then you can stop here.

To get clockworkmod recovery loaded so you can flash whatever you want, nandroid, etc then continue on....

Once rebooted grab the recovery from here: Team Epic: CWM Recovery on all SGS3 LTE Variants
It's been found that there can be issues with recovery not "seeing" your external sdcard if you use one of the above listed. Instead use one of the following
CWM 5.8.4.5
or
CWMTouchRecovery 5.8.4.5

Extract this file to get a recovery.img file and copy to your phone's internal /sdcard
(to extract the file, remove md5 from the end first, then extract with your program of choice, I use WinRAR)

Connect your phone to computer and open the command prompt
Type adb shell, then hit enter
Type su, then hit enter
Type dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18, then hit enter

After entering that command, you should see this:
Code:
13992+0 records in
13992+0 records out
7163904 bytes transferred in 1.672 secs (4284631 bytes/sec)
Type reboot recovery, then hit enter

Once it reboots you will now have CWM Recovery installed. It is highly suggested that at this time you make a nandroid backup so you have a freshly rooted setup to fall back on should you run in to any problems down the road.

Don't have adb installed/setup? Check out this video, it will walk you through the process

Enjoy!

Will this method work with the new OTA? Secondly how do I extract the recovery.img from the CWM download. Tried doing this with winrar and 7zip, no dice.

So I did this last night, everything worked as it was said it would. I just have a few questions... First, I lost my brightness slider after the root, is this because it downgraded to a different version of ICS? Second, if I receive/check for OTA updates, will they work? I haven't done any further mods other than the root, no Roms, no CWM or anything if that helps. Thanks in advance for the help.

Signed, Noob

Well after a wipe of all data, the phone said I had an update, so I took the chance and sure enough, the OTA went through. Superuser is still there, and all seems to be working correctly. If I find anything unusal, I'll post it and let y'all know.

See! . . . that's exactly the kind of thing that worries me. lol :-\ As I use my brightness slider constantly. Were you on ICS [~LH9] kyptoniteguy?

Phew! :). . . and did you also get your brightness slider back?

i tried this - everything went ok - odin said succeeded but it hangs on rebooting with the samsung screen. any ideas?

Hey, the exact same thing happened to me. I followed the directions to the letter, made sure the phone was left plugged in and charged, but it hung at the Samsung screen. The only thing I can figure is that this tutorial isn't compatible with newer Android software versions (I just got my new phone recently and it was fully updated to the newest version before I even left the store).

To fix it, I had to bite the bullet and do a factory reset (turn off phone completely, then press Vol Up + Home + Power, then select factory reset from the list). This will erase ALL personal data on the phone, including contact information.

EDIT: I apologize for the unintentional bump. I did not see that the last post in this thread was over a month ago.

Hey,
I'm thinking about using this guide to root my phone and I just had a couple of quick questions that would make me less anxious about it.

1. Will I lose all (or any) of my data (game saves, memos, etc.)? I know you usually don't while routing, I just want to make sure of this method.
2. If I want to only root my phone and not install CWM, should I just stop at "To get clockworkmod"? Or is there anything after that I do to get it rooted?
2A. If I don't plan on installing ROMs right now, do I really need CWM? Do I need it for Titanium Backup or anything else?
2B. Can I install CWM later or should I just install it now? Can I do it later, after I root it?
3. Any tips or advice for a first time rooter?

Thanks guys!
