HOW-TO root your Sprint Hero (condensed and easy to read version)

Well now I think I've made matters worse. I tried it again, and the phone rebooted and is now just stuck on a screen with a triangle shape with an exclamation mark inside it and a picture of a phone by it. Did I just brick this thing?

NO its not bricked that just means the recovery img isnt there pull the battery out and you should be fine.

Ok I rebooted the phone and its fine, but still no recovery image. lol this is kind of frustrating. I wish I knew more about this stuff.

Have you tried using the 1.5.2 recovery img, i don't think it really matters i just know its not as old as 1.3 you have.

Yep I've tried them both

Okay then.hmmm, have you tried putting the path to the folder in and then try pushing. Like(cd C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools)Edit for your mac. Then adb push recovery.

I think I know the problem... is USB debugging enabled on your phone? You can check by going into settings/applications/development and making sure the USB debugging is checked.

Wondering something here:

Rooting's suppose to make it so I can have admin privileges and uninstall anything from the "Manage Applications" menu right?

I did the root, didn't see any problems, and installed leaked 2.1. When I go into manage though I can't uninstall Sprints bloatware. Any ideas?

You can't do it from that menu.

Navigate to you ask tools folder using command prompt
Code:
cd c:\Android-sdk-windows\tools
Mount the phone
Code:
adb remount
Run the shell
Code:
adb shell
Remove bloatware
Code:
rm /system/app/nameofapp.apk

Enjoy

Looks like this Android stuff is a bit deeper than I thought :) (you'll have to bear with me, this being my first android device)

Running into a problem, whenever I try to remount the device I get "error: device not fount". It should be set to charge only with debugging enabled right? Any idea what's wrong?

yeah, it should be set to debugging mode and you don't need to mount the SD card.
Do you have the proper drivers installed? (if you rooted via this method, you should)
Is HTC sync running on your computer (exit it out if it shows up on the bottom bar at all)
if you type:
Code:
adb devices
You get the same error, correct?

Try installing PDAnet. It goes on the phone an on the computer. Itll prompt you to download the client for pc online from the phone. You can download it to the phone and itll save it to the sd card in a folder called downloads. Run that .exe on your computer and set it up. It'll install a driver at somepoint.

I'm stuck......I've done everything up to this point:

Step9 - In the custom recovery you?ll be faced with a menu. Use your trackball to navigate through it. We are looking for the ?Backup/Restore? option. Highlight it, then click your trackball to select it. The ?Nand backup? option is what we want here. Highlight it, and click that trackball. You?ll see the following on the bottom of your phone?s screen:

How do I get to the custom recovery so I can find the "Backup/Restore" option?

When you type reboot recovery command it should have restarted your phone to a green and black menu. Another way is power off phone. Then while holding the home key down hit power til menu pops up.
