[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

I picked up my EVO on June 4th and have only had one OTA. THe first one that fixed the problem with the SD card. My software version number is 1.32.651.6.

It appears that this method takes you back to 2.1. I can still run the original unrevoked that gives you a temporary root (you lose it if you reboot).

If I run unrevoked, can start from there?

Do I need to run the OTA first and then start from there?

Should I just start from step 1 regardless and do all of the steps?

Love this forum. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have 2.2 froyo now? If not just skip too the simple root part to get full root, we here don't like unrevoked. (at least I don't)

anybody wanna help me ?

Help you with what...?

I think I'm comprehending this process pretty well now. My last remaining little bit of confusion seems to center around these "custom recovery image" thingies. Are the following statements true?

  1. Having a custom recovery image installed lets you flash custom ROMs from the recovery menu on your phone. It also allows you to do Nandroid backups.
  2. The 12 step process detailed in the OP doesn't actually install, use, or require one of these custom recovery doohickies. Some sort of alternate black magic is used to get 2.1 onto the phone.
  3. After getting 2.1 up and running, one will still need to obtain and install a custom recovery image.
  4. One easy and recommended way to install a custom recovery is to perform step three of the three step "Simple Root" procedure. (Which requires you to download and run a PC program by that name.)
  5. Simple Root lets you choose between two (2) different custom recovery images: RA Recovery, or Clockwork. Both will work.
  6. The Clockwork recovery is full featured and perhaps more newb friendly. It also integrates with the "ROM Manager" Android app. However, some people claim that it has problems. The RA recovery is simpler, but "just works".
Does that all sound correct?

why dont you like unrevoked? I'm a noob so I really dont know the diff...

Some of us have had issues with our phones after using unrevoked. Most of the people have issues unrooting used unrevoked. And unrevoked forever scares some of us.

Other than that, lots of people use their method, and it works.

To each his own.

because unrevoked isn't full root and doesn't allow everything, thus, it sucks. Simple root is well, simple, and its full root.

check out this good explination video YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Your correct until well, I'll just say at stock 2.1, you run simple root when your done with simple root click extras at the top, and it will let you choose a custom recovery to flash (simple right). The only reason we roll back to 2.1 is because 2.2 itself is unrootable, unless you roll back, so when you roll back to 2.1, your still not rooted until you do simple root.

After you have custom recovery and full root through simple root, you can flash a 2.2 rom, and have all the root goodies also.

Make sense?

Noob here... getting ready to downgrade to 2.1 and root (i recently dumped iPhone & AT&T for EVO & Sprint)

My only question is / PC36IMG.zip is one of the files that is downloaded in the 1st instructions however, the same file is in <simpleroot1click.zip> which we're instructed to download later.... just saying if the files are identical this would save some download time.

you need both, I think. Just delete em off of your sd when your done.

I have another noob question if that's not a problem, the SDK pack that needs to be installed... which package(s) need to be installed/updated in order for the commands to work in cmd?

Just need the SDK itself, nothing else

I get as far as Step 11 - Reboot Bootloader,
I can get to HBOOT but when I click BOOTLOADER on my phone:
I get Checking SD
Checking PC36DIAG.zip
No Image
Checking PC36DIAG.(something)
No Image
Loading PC36IMG.zip

i get a progress bar up the right side then I go to:
Checking PC36IMG.zip
and then after 2-3 seconds I'm back to HBOOT with the following options
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

I never see the message asking me to apply the *.zip
"When it finally asks if you want to apply this zip, choose YES."

Help Please

Well... I see my problem.... the PC36IMG.zip file downloaded was only 32mb.... the download failed and I had the smaller (incomplete file on my SD)
Probably why it transferred so quick too....

downloading a new one then trying again...

This was a great help! I'm rooted. For some reason, Simple Root wouldn't work, so I ended up using unrevoked3 which worked well. Thank you for the step by step instructions.

Don't expect to be flashing all the roms you want, unrevoked does not change the eng hboot. So... Simple root wins again.
