[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

Don't expect to be flashing all the roms you want, unrevoked does not change the eng hboot. So... Simple root wins again.

Forgive me for my ignorance.

What if i flash the pc36img in this thread RA revovery and ENG hboot in one flash after UR Forever - xda-developers Will using this file give the ability to flash cm6 and others you normally wouldnt be able to flash with unrevoked forever+unrevoked3 combo?

In this thread they have the .76 hboot in a recovery flash version. But i did notice some people had issues with the recovery flash version.
Get ENG bootloader extended fastboot commands back after Unrevoked forever! - xda-developers

Right now i'm rooted with unrevoked forever+unrevoked3 combo from the original thread at xda.

Check out this good explanation video YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Your correct until well, I'll just say at stock 2.1, you run simple root when your done with simple root click extras at the top, and it will let you choose a custom recovery to flash (simple right). The only reason we roll back to 2.1 is because 2.2 itself is unrootable, unless you roll back, so when you roll back to 2.1, your still not rooted until you do simple root.

After you have custom recovery and full root through simple root, you can flash a 2.2 rom, and have all the root goodies also.

Make sense?
Thanks. Yes, that all makes sense. I actually figured out the whole, "Hey, these rooting instructions don't actually leave you with a rooted phone!" thing a couple pages earlier. That was a big step for me. :p

I will check out that video, thanks. I'd really like to find some good, concise, written instructions for Simple Root. I'm sure they are out there somewhere, and those instructions are perhaps off-topic for this thread anyway.

EDIT: I think the video in question is "What is "Root"?: How To Root Your Sprint Evo 4G (Part 1 of 3)" I've only watched the first part, but it seems very basic so far, which is good.

That said, it would be really, really, awesome if Liquid could tack some additional idiot-proof instructions on to the end of his first post. I'm sure that to the old hands, once you get to step 12, the rest is easy and self-explanatory. But I assure you, to a newb, the "step 13" stuff is just as mystifying as any of the earlier steps. So, it would great if the insultingly (;)) complete instructions used in steps 1 through 12 could continue for just a few more steps. Tell folks exactly how to get and use Simple Root. Tell them which recovery to choose, just to keep things simple. Explain how to wipe. Tell them how to flash the 2.2 version that has been recommended. Finally, explain how to do a Nandroid backup.

That would deliver us newbs to a good "stopping place". Froyo would then be rooted, as the thread title promises.

All that info is available elsewhere, of course. And this sticky is pretty darn great as is. I don't want to seem at all ungrateful. Doc'ing stuff is a tedious and thankless job, and I greatly appreciate that this thread exists at all.

The reason i didn't want to go into the 2.1 rooting instructions is because the proper way to do it , not that its what i did in this case, would be again by another slurry of adb controls and toggling some flash in the web browser and then installing a rooted "pc...zip" wtvr.

And all of that is good and all, but people would then use simple root or unrevoked or ect any way... and i didn't want to get my hands tied. I linked the last step of the rooting guide so that users could decide for themselves how they wanted to root their phone.

I do apologize that this only went as far as to tell you how to be able to root, and where to go for that last step, and that the title when looked at from your perspective may be slightly misleading. However if you need any help, feel free to pm me, and i'll be more than happy to assist.

If the method has been adjusted so that you have the eng bootloader, then you are in good shape. Before unrevoked did not have that option available.

Mods sorry about the double post.

Unrevoked forever is kind of sketchy to me, and it really is uneeded IMO, but each to their own really, glad it worked out for you.

------

Lj maybe you should put some kind of disclaimer against Unrevoked like

"if you used unrevoked you cannot flash certain custom roms, and unrevoked forever is literally FOREVER"

and give a little something for simple root like

"simple root is the best evar" lol nah more like.

"simple root will let you dont whatever you wish, and is reverseable"

But, its your thread and im just thinking of way to cut down on the "cyanogen wont flash, i used unrevoked 3 to root, whats wrong?" threads.

Thanks for the great write up too Lj, helping loads.

as long as you have the eng bootloader you can flash whatever you want. It seems that unrevoked might have started to include the eng-bl in their new releases. If not, we can help can install the eng-bl themselves, or complain to the unrevoked team.

woah, unrevoked is moving up in the world then.. haha

You have absolutely nothing to apologize for. It's totally understandable that you would only document the steps that are unique to rooting an Evo that is already running stock 2.2. Everything beyond Step 12 of your write-up is common to all Android phones, more or less. The hypothetical steps 13, 14, and 15 would be duplicating instructions already found in numerous other places.

Perhaps a disclaimer to that effect would be a good idea? Just for the newbs that decide to follow your instructions without first researching how to do those last few things. As I understand it, you wouldn't want to stay on that version of 2.1 for any time at all. (Besides it not being rooted, wasn't there something about the partitions being messed up by the exploit?)

Done.

I'll go ahead and re-recommend this three-part series on YouTube. It seems to cover pretty much everything you need to do, post step-12. He ends up on a CyanogenMod nightly, and he doesn't cover how to do a Nandroid backup, but other than that, everything is laid out in glorious, Evo-specific detail.

BTW there is a way to unroot UR forever...so far it has not given me issues. I'm going to root my wife's evo using simple root.

Is it assumed that if you follow this guide and root via SimpleRoot, that you will need to flash the latest 2.2 radio, wimax, and update to 1.40 PRI prior to flashing the stock rooted 2.2 ROM by SteelH? Because its my understanding that if you were just to root and install his ROM it doesn't touch those partitions.

I am a little lost. What do they mean when they say to-do a full wipe
Ah, you are where I was, about 15-hours-of-reading ago. :D

"Wiping" is an option that you will be offered in your recovery menu, after you have installed (flashed) a custom recovery image. If you use the RA-Recovery image, it looks like you have the option of doing 4 different types of data wipes. Doing all 4 sounds like a "full wipe" to me.

That video I linked above shows some dude doing 3 of the 4.

I'm still utterly clueless about flashing radios, and those PRI things. I too would be interested to know whether us new Evo owners should be worrying about that right away.

From what I understand a full wipe if your using RA its the first 3 options in the wipe menu.

As far as radios that pretty easy. Just boot into recovery go to the flash from SD card then flash the radios. Make sure u flash your Rom first then reboot then flash radios. Also note that after each radio flash u also have to reboot.

Flashing radios using this method doesn't work if you used unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever. clockwork recover aborts the install of the zip. If someone could post how to flash a radio if you used the original 2.2 root instructions ( unrevoked ect) that would be awesome.

Do you have 2.2 froyo now? If not just skip too the simple root part to get full root, we here don't like unrevoked. (at least I don't)

Help you with what...?

after i push all the files to my sd card and do reboot recovery through command my phone tries to install pcimg36 and if fails. my phone then continued to go into the screen where its the phone and a red triangle and couldn't boot up until i removed the pcimg36 off my sd card with a sd card reader. i thought i had destroyed my evo

I didn't flash with clockwork I used RA and I didn't have any issues.

I'm using the unrevoked combo

I got tired of waiting for my .net download yesterday and just used unrevoked 3 and I flashed the latest radio today no problem. And my nand is unlocked.
