[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

Awesome! I had no issues reverting back but can not download Simple Root. The link is just waiting and nothing is happening. I did find an alternative download, but it seems to be an older version called "simpleroot .1" can I use this instead??

Always wipe before flashing a new rom...no real need to format your card, just wipe in recovery.

No, i didn't talk that far yet. I was saying to reset the phone as like new phone just of factory, no other app but sense+sprint and etc., format the whole sdcard w/ default data, no other music and pictures

not necessary to reformat. i mean you can, if you want it wouldn't hurt. What you should do is remove all the junk that was pushed onto your card earlier... thats about it.

turn USB debugging back on ;)Turn USB

Turn USB debugging back on? I already have done that. My issue is the download link for SimpleRoot is not working. I am wondering if i can use that old version to achieve the root.

In my download manger it says starting but is not moving.

Edit:

Its probably me then, obviosly not you. I will try a different browser. Off to work right now. I would love to call in sick and play with my phone :) Thanks for your help

Ok.. So I was able to get back to 2.1. After I turned the phone back on I plugged it back to the computer and opened Simple Root. I did the update for Simple Root then restarted the Simple Root. I made sure USB debugging was on and clicked on root. A black screen came on for a split second then a green check was on the bottom left. After that I clicked Flash Recovery. Another screen came and went real quick then gave me the option for Clockwork and RA_Recovery I believe. I clicked on RA_Recovery and again a screen came and went. Nothing happened with my phone. I turned the phone off and botted it up by pressing Power and Up Volume. I hit bootloader but after that it wouldnt let me go down to recovery. It wasn't responsive to me trying to navigate up or down then started downloading the PCsomething file, did the usual hard reset process. Well I downloaded Shoot me to see if I was rooted and it wont work, it says I'm not rooted. Is there a better way to find out? Am I doing something wrong?

watch the video that goes along with simple root, you actually have to install some things on the phone after pressing the buttons. Same thing happened to me the first time.

use simpleroot link on first page.

Ahhh ok. Sweet. Thanks again!!

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see anything else that you have to download.
"Simple Root is now one click! You can now root your HTC EVO with one click. This is still for the 1.47.651.1 OTA update. Just download the file, install and click the shortcut on your desktop! Download below!"

Also that video doesn't really show much. It's too zoomed out to really see what he's doing. There's no directions on what to do. I hit step one then step two hit RA_Recovery. What do I do after that? I'm assuming rebooting the phone, but what am I doing in the optionis when the screen comes up with the androids on the skateboards?

:( God I'm such a pathetic noob. I went through the downgrading process with no problems but I can't do a simple "2 step" way to root.. smfh..

"Both steps 1 and 2 will WIPE your phone – be sure to back up anything you don’t want to lose. The SD card will not be touched though, so your photos and everything else stored on it should be OK. But back up anyway!
After finishing with step 3, running programs requiring root still doesn’t work – you have to install a custom ROM like DamageControl or Fresh by downloading the ROM image, rebooting into recovery by powering up the phone while holding the up or down volume button and installing from there."

I'm thinking I'm not rooted because the Shoot Me app says I'm not rooted... If I'm reading that correctly I MAY be rooted but I still wont be able to run root required apps until I install a custom ROM? Am I wrong about that or does that only apply to the three step way? Is there a way to tell that I am rooted? Because I already have a ROM picked out. I just need to make sure I'm actually rooted and figure out how to install the ROM.
