how to transfer files from galaxy s3 with broken screen.

bkc41,
If the screen is not locked on the 'unactivated' phone you can use Kies to backup your SMS/MMS, pictures/videos, call logs, contacts and TouchWiz settings. Then you can just restore it all on the new phone.

Any idea's on how to get pass this screen, to do a file transfer?
Yeah; connect a working screen - that's it.

If I need to connect it to a working screen, do I assume it has to be the same model ( S3 ? )

Yes; any model of S3 is fine - they all use the same screen assembly. Either borrow a screen from someone or see post #40 for a source for a replacement screen assembly (or try eBay).

gatfirls, I have the exact same issue.

I even registered on the samsung site (or tried to) and it requires that you enable a couple of settings which I turned off (mainly to save battery life).

silly me :'(

They even show which ones to activate: http://i.imgur.com/szppayU.png

Ironically I would have to unlock the screen in order to change the setting that would allow me to unlock the screen remotely.

Broken digitizer, so that's not really an option. Maybe a USB mouse in a USB On-The-Go cable could unlock it with random gestures, but there's no way to really see the feedback unless I had some docking station. Samsung Smart Dock?

Ha! Verizon customers are screwed once again! Those controls aren't even present on my SCH-I535 - go figure.

With an MHL<>HDMI adapter you could see the screen on your TV, but you can't have the USB-on-the-go adapter connected at the same time. A Bluetooth keyboard/mouse would work but there's no way to enable Bluetooth and complete the pairing. Arrgh!

Hi,

Kies will not let you access your phone unless you unlock the screen on the device, this can be done relatively easily!

Go onto the Samsung website and click the 'find my phone' button (or simply google this).

Log in and there will be an option on the left hand side of the screen to unlock your screen remotely, click this and when the progress bar filled it will say 'your phone is now unlocked'.

Connect with your USB Cable and Kies will allow you access to your files.

I hope this helps, if not let me know and I will try to explain further.

My s3 has a broken screen. kies would not work as phone was screen locked. I never bothered with samsung reg so couldnot remote unlock with samsung website. so thought replacing screen was only option.

except (i have not found anybody else mention this option but i was desperate):

For those few people who installed cerberus and perhaps other some other anit-theft apps as cerberus has a remote unlock option, so you just log into your account and send the command hope this helps somebody.....

Hi... which 6 screws are you talking about? I count 11 screws...

This is my last option, tried all the rest of the options on here

This just happened to me! Phone works but screen and LCD broken and unresponsive. I had a screen lock too so what I did was I took off the back plate, removed the battery, and unscrewed the six screws to uncover the PCB board under the back housing. Then I carefully disconnected all the tiny ribbon connectors. I waited a minute just to be superstitious and then reconnected all the ribbon connectors and put everything back to how it was. Then I downloaded Kies from the Samsung website, pluged my phone into a computer via USB and was able to view all my files! Something about disconnecting the PCB board resets the default settings to factory state but doesn't delete any data at all. Good luck and I hope this helps someone out there :)

It's good that your problem is solved. Sometimes its very hard to transfer data if the phone is unlocked. I have faced the same problem earlier.

Hey im trying to do this and its saying that the phone is offline :/

But, how would that adapter make a difference? Your still basically plugging into the PC, just that there's an extra cable in between.

Please help! I have this same issue with my galaxy s4. The screen got cracked internally and its black now. but the buttons at the bottom still light up when its turned on. I've tried everything I can to get my photos off. My problem is the unlocking for mass media thing. I went on the samsung website but I cant find the lock from the website. I did get my replacement phone but I dont feel comfortable switching the motherboard like others have suggested. I really need to get these photos and videos off. any help would be amazing

So, you're saying that you have something more than a simple swipe lockscreen?

If you're not comfortable moving the screen assembly from the replacement phone to your old phone (and then back when you're done), you could try something like thisto connect it to your TV (along with a USB keyboard & mouse for input) so you can see.

Pls help.
So, I have big problem. My phone ended up in washing machine (dont ask how). I said goodbye to him immediately but somehow it still works except the screen. So basically now its locked. I've tried as you sad but my phone was never connected to Samsung account so I cant "find my phone". What to do in that case?

I guess it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you just want to get your data off you could try something like http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009QW3TBK...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU3510150 - this would allow you to mirror the screen on a TV/monitor (with HDMI support) and if the touch screen isn't working you could use a USB keyboard/mouse to deal with the Pattern/PIN/Password.

Or you could simply replace the screen assembly - here are a few sources:

Genius and even the Samsung tech team didn't know/think to advise this.
Many thanks
