how to transfer files from galaxy s3 with broken screen.

You are a wonderful person! This is the closest I've got to backing up my photos from my Galaxy S4 after busting my screen, it seems to be uploading my pictures to Dropbox, Kies still won't have any of it. I will respond here with the outcome!

Hi all,

Thought people might appreciate feedback on how I managed to save my photos. I dropped my Galaxy S4 this weekend and the top corner of the screen totally smashed (so the glass and the LCD), leaving me with a perfectly functioning phone without the most important thing - a display.

After following the instructions of mbell1988 and going to the Samsung site and remotely 'unlocking my phone', I plugged my phone back into my computer and the option to back up my files onto Dropbox appeared...and my photos started syncing to Dropbox! Brilliant!

I'd love to be able to back up my texts and WhatsApp messages too, but I am sure that can only be done on the Kies app, which still won't register my phone (I believe this is because when you plug into the keys app, a pop up appears on the phone asking what you want to do with your phone while it's plugged in, obviously without the screen you can't tap these options. If anyone knows how to solve the Kies issue, do let me know!

Thanks again mbell1988! Lifesaver! :D

I don't think so :(. I read it all and there's no other solution to unlock the screen unless you're registered with Samsung.

Hi,

I tried the "find my phone" suggestion problem is that my phone is showing offline as I dropped it while mobile data was turned off.
I have Samsung Note 3, I am able to receive calls on my phone but i cannot pick it up as the screen is off.
Also when i reboot the booting audio is also very clear and the soft buttons are getting light-up as well.

Can you please help me with this.

Thankyou MBELL!!!

This was such a quick easy fix, I wouldn't have known how to do it without finding this thread. You're a legend.

hi i had the same problem and here is the solution. You can connect a wired mouse to your phone via a (usb otg) then if you remember the code you can swipe with your mouse on your phone even when the screen is broken and then you vcan transfer all your data. Np

Hi,

I tried to use the Find My Mobile service but it is only connected to my new phone and not the broken one. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm not enough of an ADB expert to provide step-by-step instructions, but I'm pretty sure you can use ADB to pull content off of the phone. I don't know offhand about being able to unlock the phone, but I'd wager that the folks over on XDA could provide some guidance.

I have purchased 7 or 8 otg mhl devices. None have worked.I see the screen buT the mouse, key board, and I need it for court. Help!

Did it work?

I have purchased several!! None worked. Any thing other than the otg

Thank you so much! I just unlocked my phone used the steps you gave. Saved me hundreds of dollars on the repair store AND more importantly, saved all my data. THANKS!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if the stuff you want to retrieve from your S3 are texts, Kies is garbage. I have had almost the same exact issue as you, except my phone was not locked. I used Kies, though I was able to retrieve all my media and contacts, it made a backup of my texts but it has no way of retrieving the texts on the Kies program. I opened the Kies backup file and found the file with the backed up texts, but it was in .SME format. I have tried several programs to convert the .SME files into a readable format and every one of those programs I've found are absolute rubbish. I am still trying to figure out a way. Think I might try the suggestion of switching the motherboards with my new S3 phone and finding another program that'll actually backup texts in a readable format, then switch back the motherboards to their original phones. Its at least worth a try but my question and worry is if switching the motherboards out will wipe them of all the data on them.
