[How To] Unroot and return to stock [RUU Method]

for some reason my computer installed HTC bootloader drivers as i after verifying phone information and selecting the ROM to update? this is normal?

ERROR [171]: USB CONNECTION ERROR

The ROM Update Utility cannot connect to your Android phone. Please check that the USB cable is connected properly between the PC and your Android phone.

Check the following:

1. The Android phone is connected to the USB cable.

2. The USB cable is connected to the PC.

this is the same message I got the first time, and it occured at the same time during the process. What do we do?

I opened the RUU and this time it attempts to verify phone information but just shows error [170] usb connection error. the text that follows is identical to error 171. this is the position that I was in when I started posting on the forum. now what?

it didnt make it to bootloader this time. where as, that is where it failed the first time.

ok so take the battery out of your phone and un plug the cord so it shuts off, wait a few seconds, put the battery back in and press the volume down button and the power button until the white screen loads. plug the wire back in. verify the top of the screen says fastboot usb, if it doesn't select it from the menu with the power button.

after it's there start the RUU.

alright, I did two things different this time. First, I did what you recommended. Second, I used the RUU from xda developers that you had as an alternative link. Which was a different version, rom 3.x as opposed to 1.x like the one shown in your resources.

It successfully completed the process and has finished rebooting. it was stuck at "4G" screen for a LONG time, then it was stuck at the "htc" screen for a long time. However, it appears to be back in commission. Awesome!

Yay! I'm glad it worked! I'm not sure what the links are in the beginning of this thread but I'll see if we can't get them updated or at least a chart for version to version.

I'm glad you're up and running.

The first time a ROM loads it has to expand quite a bit of information, that's why it stays at the 4G and HTC screens a bit, it'll be a lot faster on your next reboot.

I tried this just tonight. Got a 140 error????
Evo came back on, tho it's run's choppy now. WTF? Grrr...

I've been reading up in the thread further. I will try redoing it again later tonight, hopefully it is a sync error like the rest.

Otherwise, if there's something else, someone else know's, I'd appreciate the help, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks!

Different issue lol.. What about if the charging/data port is borked and we cant use the RUU...im going to scour a few more threads as I have been doing but most say the PCIMG is old and having issues returning to complete stock

My evo isn't connecting to HTC Sync (and i've updated the latest version)... do i need to get rid of the custom rom first? or will this process do it for me?
