How to Voodoo ***Updated 27 Mar 2011***KERNEL BUILT FROM SOURCE/SOUND/UNDERVOLTED

ok. here is a little clarifacation on cwm colros and what not.

if i flash red over green and i do not have a voodoo kernel, and apply update.zip, in red, cwm is now green and red is gone until i reflash.

if i flash red over green and i do have a voodoo kernel, then apply update.zip in red, i get green until the next time i boot into cwm, then red is back.

got that. i know it was super easy to follow. ;)

you don't have to disable the lagfix if you're flashing another Voodoo kernel. I've flashed back and forth between Voodoo kernels from Adrenalyn, Kaos and JT without ever disabling it.

thank you for clarifying that. i will edit the post so that its more clear.

I attempted to write a post explaining that, but every time I did, I just confused myself to the point I wasn't even sure I knew how it all worked! :p

lol. lol. lmbo. :D:D:D:D

i would have posted it sooner but i kept having to rewrite it.

Keep this going I'm still a little fuzzy lol. All I know is my experience when I tried to root using the easier red CWM method in the stickies here it worked but my phone would wipe itself out on every reboot. I think since I still had the update.zip on my SD card from my previous setup it may have screwed things up, red CWM eventually disappeared.

yeah, ive noticed it disapearing if i flashed it over green and i dont have a voodoo kernel. so you can either delete green and then reflash red or dive into voodoo. either way you should not get a wipe every time you reboot. something is goofy there. if you dont care about loosing data, format your sd card and flash back to stock. then try the "gunnermike53 lazy root" method in the first post. if you arent ready for voodoo just flash a different kernel. let me know how my lazy method works for you.

I would just use green if you have a non-voodoo kernel and use red if you have voodoo. No real differences other than voodoo options. I have seen on red CWR there is no back to previous menu option. I had to look at my CWR cheat sheet to see that the search button takes care of that.

I have not done done any back ups or restores at this point though. I assume that once voodoo is removed, a non-voodoo kernel is loaded, then a previous non-voodoo backup can be restored in green CWR. Same would true once a voodoo kernel is loaded then a previous voodoo backup can be restored in red cwr.

Ok guys took a major plunge here in the name of geek science. Basically I flashed Adrynalyne's test Kernel 1/16 test 2 VOODOO (yea I said Voodoo!) and everything went fine. Here's what I did. First booted into recovery thru my boot options on my Blackmod enhanced theme. From there you are in the blue (stock) recovery. Then select update.zip and that takes you into green recovery. Then I just applied the Voodoo kernel.zip on my SD card. Copied fine then when it rebooted it was only about a two minute wait plus a cool female voice telling you what's up. Phone booted normally then and everything is fine. I then played with recovery. Booting into recovery now takes you to the red CWM. If you apply the update.zip you still get into green recovery. However when you reboot it again takes you back into red recovery - just like gunnermike said. I know this is old hat for alot of guys but alot of newbies might wanna see these little details. I havent tried to use ROM manager yet, dunno what its gonna do.

EDIT: Just flashed a new boot animation from ROM manager, worked just as before no problems. It looks like dispite my first attempt with red CWM it lives aside green CWM seamlessly. Now when punk.Kaos finishes up his Froyo build I'll be set

Yea, basically what's happening is that red full Clockwork recovery replaces blue stock recovery. Green is still there because it lives on your SD card (as update.zip), so it's still accessible. When you boot to recovery, it goes straight to red. When you apply update.zip, it loads up green. If in green and you reboot recovery, it reboots back to red.

So, blue is gone. Red has replaced it. Green is still where it always was - on your SD card.

other than the voodoo stuff the biggest differance is you can boot into red without flashing in rom manager first. which means you dont have to be rooted to use red.

remember the back up is of your rom, not your modem or your kernel. doing a restore of a rom has nothing to do with voodoo. if you create a backup while using a voodoo kernel, then switch to a nonvoodoo, you can still restore to that backup.

I gave this a try and am happy I made the switch. The phone is a little faster now but not significantly. I'll see how it goes this week.

glad it worked for you. let us know how it goes.

What kernel are you guys using? I have tried the test 2 and the 1/21 - test? kernel of adrynlyne's and have notice some heat and battery loss since moving to voodoo. The non-voodoo test 2 was awesome for me.

im using test 6 low voltage voodoo. it is running great. there is a reason he release 4 other test kernels after 2. i personally didnt have any trouble out of test 2 but i was running nonvoodoo at the time. other mentioned problems they were having. give 6 a try or maybe one of jt's, im gonna try his in a day or two.

Test 6 is the 1/21 voodoo I am currently running. I thought most the updates after test 2 were for the cd issue that I never had. The voodoo link in JT's thread on xda is down right now. I know all phones are different so I am looking for that magical voodoo kernel that likes my phone.

lol. arent we all. only test 4 and 5 addresses the cd rom issue. you can still sue them even if you dont have the issue, they are excelent kernels. i have a folder for all my android stuff. i download just about everything i can. so i have the kernels, like all the kernels, from everyone. im wierd i know. i havent flash jt voodoo stuff, ive been running adry's. i will prolly only run jt's for a bit, i feel like adry takes the time to help us out here on AC, so i want to support him in any way i can.

I agree. Adrynalyne is awesome. He is just tweaking JT's stuff though. I love both of their stuff and they have been amazing for the SF community. I wish I knew how to do some of this stuff ;)

I am currently loading an imnuts voodoo kernel. Should be similar as it is UV but we will see how it performs.
