[How To] Wireless Tethering for Root Users

Never used Belkin, I love my Linksys. Its an older model now but still works great and all my laptops/desktops also use Linksys.

Anyone have trouble with their phone connecting to WiFi after using this?
After using wireless tether and then turning it off, I go to the wireless settings and turn on WiFi, it says "Connecting>disconnected>scanning>connecting" and keeps going in an endless loop and never actually connects to WiFi.

Rooted with deodexed EB13 ROM (EXT4) and stock EB13 dual filesystem kernel.

using WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.0-pre3

*edit - appears that if I try to start WiFi while wireless tether is on, it will try to get an IP from my WiFi router but with wireless tether off, i won't. Also, no matter what I do, wireless tether turns my wifi on when I exit out. Even if I have it off when I start wireless tether, it is on and trying to connect to my router right after I exit.

I haven't had much success yet with the Wireless Tether v3.0 pre"xx" on Froyo DK28 or EB13. I'm still using Wireless Tether v2.0.6 and have no problems.

After looking at it more closely, I found out it was messing with my 4G as well. I don't think I can live with just 3G so I tried restarting and pulling the battery. Also tried uninstalling and then restarting. Still nothing so I finally did a factory wipe. Everything is working again. Restoring my backups now. I used v2 before and decided to give v3 a shot. It worked well for tethering but had that ugly side effect.

I don't think v2.0.6 in the Market supports infrastructure which is needed for IPOD, XBOX etc... You would have to try the newer version 3.0 pre xx which now support infrastructure mode for those devices, the newer versions are experimental so expect them to be buggy.
Just FYI, just tested my daughters IPOD TOUCH and it worked, tethered no problem.

On the Market version v2.0.6 or the newer 3.0 prexx version?

Nice, thank you.. Someone mentioned it in the past but it was never confirmed.

Cannot get this to work. My laptop will NOT connect to the phone. I see the SSID listed, click connect, enter my key and nothing. No computers show up in Access-Control and the laptop does not connect to anything. I even disabled encription and Access-Control with no luck. Any ideas?

I tried the one in the market and the version listed here (2.0.5?) I am running EB13 with Genocide 0.3a

Strange that your not getting either one to work. Did you ever use Wireless Tether in the past before switching to Froyo EB13?

Anyways, heres a link to the Wireless Tethering site on Google... Download one of the newer versions and give it a spin.. I only posted the Market version here and v2.0.5. because they have been the most dependable prior to EB13.

@Rotzy, I'm using my desktop right now to send this message. My desktop is running off my Epic 4g right now.

Wireless Tethering v3.0 pre11

Connected right up first try.

Installed 2.0.7. Still nothing. Tried restarting phone and laptop. Changed NO settings after enabeling Encryption and User Control. Tried disabling encryption and user control. Tried changing channels. Computer will not connect....

Well, I guess my laptop does not like Ad Hoc mode. Downloaded v3.0 pre11 and it works great now.

@Rotzy, excellent! Yes it could be a configuration on your laptop. My one laptop is fussy about connecting also.

Enjoy your wireless tethering :)

Woohoo.
Just rooted after a couple of tries, installed wifitether 3.0 and got up and running.
This is great.

I installed the version you have in the first post (3.0), and im having issues. Once I press start tethering, the hourglass/swirl goes for a bit then my phone turns off and reboots. I've tried 3 times and the same thing keeps happening. Im running ace rom V1.7 with the genocide kernel. Should I try reinstalling the app?

I had the same problem with Bonzai 3.0.1 and Syndicate 1.0.1 - WiFi Tether v3.0 rebooted my phone every time I started tethering with it. Switched to Wireless Tether v2.0.7 and am now tethering my Macbook Pro just fine.

I can only get version 2.x to work. None of the v.3.x worked for me at all. My computer sports ad-hoc but not my Palm Pre minus.
