[How To] Wireless Tethering for Root Users

I'm using the experimental version Paul posted, and it works flawlessly.

I just installed wifi_tether_v3_0-pre11.apk on rooted EC05. When I start the program everything looks fine, until I get a hotspot icon in the notification area that asks me to enable Sprint hotspot.
If I do not enable this, my laptop can connect to the phone, but not through to the net.
Will enabling this sign me up for the $29.99/month hotspot plan?

Honestly I am not sure since I haven't used it on EC05 yet. You could also try using Wireless Tethering v2.0.7, its a bit older but I think it does it without using the Sprint Hotspot.

Don't quote me on all this, EC05 is new and I haven't completely experimented with everything yet :p

Not to insult you, but your phone is rooted, right?

Yup, it is rooted. I will try out the oler versions of the tethering software tonight. To be clear, you don't ever have to enable sprin hotspot for this thering to work? I had it working on eb13 but flashed back to eclair for the latest froyo. I simply don't remember from when I installed this 4 months ago.

No, you dont have to activate the Sprint Hotspot for wifitether to work.

Did you click on Samsung epic in the menu selection (that was the only thing I had to adjust in settings)?

I have it working on EC05 and even got 4G connected (which for me works after connecting with Wifiteher first otherwise I get a reboot).

Yes, I clicked the Epic 4g setting. Scoob, could you check for me exactly which version of the wireless tether apk you installed?

Thank you Paul for EC05 root and now wireless tether!!!

DFroelich: I have the experimental from the OP and got it working on EC05. Make sure 4G is turned off when you turn on wireless tether. You can turn 4G back on after.

I am using 30.0 Pre11 Experimental. In fact, I just started it up and turned on 4G and using it right now to surf...

I did root to EC05 with Odin which wiped my Epic clean method and manually reinstalled my apps again.

My phone is rooted, I tried the newest wifi tether and when I try to tether in 4g in crashes, any suggestions?

Didn't see the last post, but are you saying to turn on the wifi tether first and then turn on 4g?

Turning on 4G after starting WiFi Tether has worked for me. Otherwise I get a reboot.

WiFi Tethering

Can someone help me with tethering my laptop to my Samsung Epic? I know this could be done before the software update, but I haven't seen a work around since.

Thanks for the help!

Ray

Take a look at the first post, it should explain everything. If you have questions about its content feel free to post them.

Hello everyone. I just rooted my EPIC with the stock filesystem yesterday. This was mainly for tethering and I used the 2.5.5 CWM version in the sticky. Anyway, my intention was to be able to connect my laptop and Nook color (NC) to my phone, for some MILD internet access on the go (for important emails n such..no heavy data usage).

I tried both versions 2.0.7 (from market) and 3.0 pre exp 12. Thanks to Paul for the excellent instructions.
Here's some questions I had:

1) It seems the Nook color only connects with the 3.0 experimental version. Now the problem is that in the 3.0 version on enabling Wifi Tethering, I get a message "Hotspot Connected" in the notification. And if I click on hotspot connected it takes me right to the Sprint Hotspot! Now does this imply that the 3.0 version ACTUALLY uses the Sprint's hotspot service? In which case, I shall have to pay the $30? Can anyone confirm this? This might defeat the purpose of Wifi tether in the first place.

Of course, I could use the 2.0 version which does not have this problem of sprint hotspot. But the Nook color does NOT connect to the Wifi using this route, so that's a bummer.

2) I get awful speeds on my 4g. While my phone gives 4-5 meg download, on tethering with EITHER version, I get very low speeds like barely .5 mbps. In fact the 3G is actually faster than 4G using WiFi tether. Any idea what seems to be throttling the 4G speeds? (and yes, I disconnect 4G before tether and then put it back on).

Overall, I can live with slower 3G speeds, but I was really hoping to tether my NC with my phone. Since the 3.0 version seems to use Sprint's hotspot, is there any OTHER free way for this? Thanks in advance..

1)The sprint hotspot activating when you turn on wifi tether is normal. However you shouldn't touch the hotspot app, just leave it alone and you won't be charged.

2)I really have no idea:)

Cool. Thanks for the quick response. So I won't click on the hotspot icon in the notification while tethering. Hopefully that won't lead to the Sprint hotspot charges.
