How will you feel if VZW Galaxy S3 & HTC get Jelly Bean first?

I wouldn't care if the S3 got it first.I have that phone to.ha
But the Nexus already has jelly bean, I'm running it now on my nexus.

It really doesn't matter who gets it first, in my opinion, as long as it gets the update. The great thing about the Nexus is that at least we'll get support from the community long after Verizon decides to drop support for the device. Especially now that the VZW Nexus is for the most part supported in AOSP.

Re: How will you feel if VZW Galaxy S3 & HTC get Jelly Bean first

I would love it because I have the S iii and the nexus. I can easily put jelly bean on the nexus with custom roms (which I've already done). Not so easy with how locked down the s iii is.

Re: How will you feel if VZW Galaxy S3 & HTC get Jelly Bean first

Couldn't agree more.

Based on all the responses here, I think it's fair to say that the Galaxy Nexus is many things to many people, and I think that's a good thing. What I can say for sure (and I don't imagine I'd get too much disagreement here) is that the Verizon Nexus experiment, has proven to be sort of a big FAIL in the sense that it is the stepchild of the Nexus family, and despite Google's best intentions, doesn't (or can't) receive the same love as other Nexus devices.

To those that suggest that the Galaxy Nexus is probably not right for me because I would consider switching to an iPhone over this debacle, you may be right - in the interest of full disclosure, may last phone was an iPhone. I switched to the Galaxy Nexus because, unlike what seems like most people these days, I am not a cell phone bigot and the Galaxy Nexus came along at just the right time... I was frustrated with all the things my iPhone couldn't do and was tired of jailbraking to get it to do what I wanted (which introduced a whole other set of headaches) and felt that I had suffered the crappy coverage of AT&T long enough. I knew that if I really was going to make the switch, it HAD to be a Nexus device because I wanted the PURE Google experience, didn't want to have to deal with waiting interminably for updates, or rooting my phone to get rid of all the crap most Android phones are shipped with. For these reasons, the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon was a complete no-brainer (or so I thought). Other than the fact that I'm on my second handset (first one up and died out of the blue with no warning), had to sideload Google Wallet because my carrier felt threatened by it, had to wait like six months to get the 4.0.4 update that corrected things that made it incredibly frustrating to use up until then because I was not interested in rooting/flashing it (I can hear the root zealots out there rolling their eyes), and am now faced with the same scenario - root or wait - other than all that, it's been a great experience! (Sorry for the sarcasm, I'm just pissed is all.) In fairness, coming from iOS and testing the Android waters has been a really great experience in some respects, and I'm sad that being a lab rat in the botched VZW Nexus experiment has somewhat tainted it for me. But I'm an engineer and a computer geek, so I can still really appreciate the nuances of what makes each OS special and unique and what advantages one has over the other (and make no mistake - each is inferior to the other in some ways that are immediately obvious, and also in ways you can only appreciate after living with them day in, day out). Why am I bothering to say all of this? I guess just to put my comments (and my frustration), in context. And because I wish more people to got experience living with both, or at least got to hear a (hopefully) unbiased take from someone with no allegiances, for what it's worth.

Sigh. For the moment, I'm a disgruntled Verizon Galaxy Nexus owner and Android fan, but who knows... I may go back to the golden handcuffs. If nothing else, at least I'll know when I'll be getting my updates. I may have to get a Nexus 7 to help ease the pain. :-]

Disagree on your assessment. The big thing the vz nexus has is LTE. That is HUGE. That one feature puts it above the gsm version. It is also the main reason why updates lag behind gsm.

3g? Nah.

I agree but it is not the LTE holding ours back it is solely CDMA crap. LTE is actually based on GSM technology so as soon as LTE is wide spread enough Verizon might drop the CDMA red tape monster and the hope of faster updates just might be a reality. Sadly it is kinda far in the future.

I highly doubt this happens. More than likely International versions get it earlier. But Verizon is notorious for being slow on updates.

I could care less who gets what first, The combination of Verizon/Samsung is about as slow to provide upgrades as I know, When I purchased my Fascinate it did not have Froyo and it severely limited my web experience. The wait for Froyo was painful and slow.

I purchased the Nexus better informed than my previous phone and with zero expectations about Verizon, they are in business to make money and don't care at all about me. Period.
So I made sure the Verizon Galaxy Nexus filled my needs at purchase time... it does.

I have no idea what is so great about Jelly Bean but my experience with Android OS is that each new upgrade is never really been a BIG deal, a refinement here and there but absolutely nothing to get excited about.

Jelly Bean is so good it makes ICS feel like Jelly Bean alpha.

Try it. Just in terms of refinement, JB is a huge improvement over ICS.

As has already been said though. I think the Nexus devices will see an OFFICIAL JB update before any other existing phone. Honestly, it will probably be a minute before any new phone is released with JB as well.

Sounds good, I look forward to the OTA arrival, perhaps I am simply fortunate but my Nexus experience is very good, not perfect. I don't think Jelly Bean will be perfect but if it is better in a way that I can actually notice an improvement I look forward to it's arrival.

I wish 4g was more consistent, I drive for a living and moving a 1/4 mile can change my download speeds from 23 mbps to 0.8 mbps...I don't think Jelly Bean can change that and in truth that is the only thing that bothers me.

Samsung may be quick about the SIII OTA, but Verizon won't.

Looks like I may be rooting soon. It'll give me something to play with while all my friends are out of town.

It's pretty clear that Samsung and Verizon don't put the Galaxy Nexus very high on
their to-do lists...."

Surprised that more people aren't upset with this report.

Why would they be? Just because Samsung is testing it doesn't mean it is anywhere near release. Given Verizon's history, the s3 will get jelly bean in, oh, September.

This. They also have to test their version of it whereas the GNEX version doesn't have that extra layer.

Because this announcement offers up the possibility of GS3 getting an OTA before the Verizon Nexus.

Listen, I know how easy it is to root and flash a custom ROM to our the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, but that isn't the point. If carriers are going to subsidize phones for two year contracts, then they should be maintained over the course of those two years. In fact, Verizon used the quickness of update as a selling point specifically for this device.

Yes, we are taking control of your personal mobile experience by ensuring that you have the current greatest OS on your phone with great help from very smart people from the dev community, but to suggest that people just move on after rooting and booting is a mistake. Even if we can easily root and update our software, we should still be holding manufacturers and carriers to task on their responsibilities to their consumers.

The reason why carriers and manufacturers aren't changing is because we are easily ignored. Every time someone says something about how the wrong the carriers and manufacturers are, the suggestion pops up that they should "root and move on." Why suggest moving on? We should root our phones and still make noise about these practices.

If the main road to your house needed major repair, of course you find an alternative route home and tell your neighbors about the route you take. And if that major road repair doesn't starts soon, the community rallies together to complain about how long its taking to update the road though they are still taking that detour. The people in the community don't just tell each other to shut up/ stop complaining, things will never change, be happy with the detour and move on! How ridiculous is that?

well.... it looks like Motorola was the winner in pushing out official Jelly Bean update.
I do realize it's just their Xoom tablets, but that shows they have someone who actually
care about the customers.

Based on this fact, I think there's a decent chance that Motorola VZW smartphones
may end up getting the first OTA Jelly Bean updates!

Oh, wait a minute... I completely forgot that Google owns Motorola now... :D
