How's the battery life on your Nexus 5X?

Battery life - I'm impressed

Full disclosure - I'm a phone *****. I get a new "flagship" phone every 6mo or so. I'm biased to Nexus devices.

OK...last phone was GS6. Legit device in many respects, but battery drain was substantial. It was OK with me because you could come home and rapid charge the F out of the thing to get her ready for a night out...so it worked.

In contrast, my Nexus 5x has proven very battery efficient. I'm typing this at 11:55cst with 51% battery after unplugging at 0748am. I'm not a gamer, but did several phone calls, internet, social networking and camera/video today. Went to a wedding tonight and did some more photos etc.

If I use my phone with impunity during the day and end up with 50% or more before heading to sleep, I'm good....this only happened after 3 days of owning the phone, but seems legit to me so far. Celebrate the battery saving 'no bloat'!

When we receive the phone, should we charge it to 100% before use? Or drain it completely before charging? I want to be able to get the full capability out of my 5x's battery

It doesn't matter. The days of being told to charge your phone for 8 hours before use are long gone.

I just get straight into mine. No negative effect.

I got a GS6. I'm thinking of getting a Nexus 5x because I hate the fact that I have to deal with At&t for an update. Anyway do you find yourself missing that beautiful Amoled display on from your GS6 with the Nexus 5x? How is the camera compared to the GS6?

Re: Battery life - I'm impressed

I watched a 2 hour video on the original factory charge through USB OTG micro SD card in a type C card reader

The battery reading went from 72% to 42%

The 5X has now been run down to 10% and recharged to 100% 5 times since then

Watching the same 2 hour video again after the 5 full recharges drained the battery 3% less.

Battery measured with GSam Battery Monitor Pro

Re: Battery life - I'm impressed

The screen on the GS6 is amazing. The N5x is less vibrant, but still very sharp and I haven't found myself saying "man, this screen is nowhere near as good as my last phone." Certainly there are trade offs...the QHD display is probably the biggest battery drain on the GS6.

The camera is very good on the N5x, but I think the GS6 still wins in low light due to the F 1.9 aperture. There again though, I haven't been disappointed in the Nexus camera either. I've compared my shots in exact same conditions as my girlfriends new iPhone 6s and think mine are better/sharper in some scenarios. In low light, they perform nearly the same.

All that aside - without any bloat, this phone flies. It is definitely faster than my GS6 and I am a minimalist when it comes to apps/tweaks etc. Pure Android experience is what I've always loved. I think too many phone companies ruin the end user experience with their skins/bloat/services etc that rob the device of its battery and resources to perform well.

I'll be using the N5x for a while....until the next toy is released :)

Man my batt life is terrible. At home today and it's down to 29% with only 40min screen time. Light flow is sucking so much battery. Might uninstall.

Much better battery than the Nexus 5 2013 and the Moto X 2014. I know that's much saying much but I have those devices. Doze really makes a difference (as it did on the nexus 5)

My battery life seems to be about 5hrs of SOT and around 11 or 12 hrs of standby. That's a massive improvement over my OG N5

If a 2 hour video drained your battery by 3% then you'll be getting 66 hours of screen on time.

The reason these threads are worthless for understanding battery life is the wide range of situations (signal being a huge one) but more importantly the intentional or unintentional misinformation. Like the guy above. Or the one who was at 50% with 6 hours sot. Right...

I hope what people say about having to let a battery settle in for a few charge cycles is true because I'm pretty disappointed so far. The 5X has been comparable to my year and a half old S5 with it's original battery. I really think it should be doing better than that.

I think what you missed was the part where he says "3% less." As in the battery life improved by only 3%. i.e. 72% to 45%.

Not quite a week in, so there's still some breaking in to do.

Alright, so it doesn't matter how you initially charge to battery, once it arrives and is activated? Also, which is the best app for monitoring SOT? I've never monitored my phones battery before (nexus 4)

Simply go into Settings>Battery>Screen

Read my post again, especially where it says "drained 3% less"

3% less than what?

3% less than the previously stated "The battery reading went from 72% to 42%"

That would mean it decreased to 27% as 0pposed to the original 30%!

Battery seems average. I got about 2 hours SOT to 50% usage. I had to restart the phone so stats are a bit messed up now but reckon I'll be good for 4 hours after first charge. Hope it improves a little in the next few days.

As an aside, I think Google have concentrated on the wrong aspect of battery life with Doze. I for one couldn't care less about losing the odd % while not using the phone. SOT and longevity while the phone is working is more important, and that has been missed again.
I know this was posted a while back, however I feel you aren't looking at this the right way.

By using Doze, you save battery when you aren't using the phone. This increases the amount of time your phone can sit idle off the charger. While that doesn't direct affect battery while screen is on, it does mean you can use your phone more over a longer period of time without having to charge it, assuming you go through phases of using your phone for something, then set it down and forget about it for a bit at work for example.

Example. You use your phone throughout the day without charging. You actively use your phone (screen on time) for 3 hours throughout that time, with periods of inactivity between uses. At the end of the day, the phone without doze has to go on the charger before the one with doze because it conserved battery during the inactivity periods. Does the way I'm explaining it make sense?

You are technically getting better screen on time/usage because Doze is allowing you to stay off the charger longer thanks to saving battery during inactivity.
