How's your GPS after the update?

i never did anything to my phone (root, gps fix, lag fix =/). i never used the gps test before, but i know that it never connected when i'm in my room(a garage >.>) but with the app, it connects in a few seconds.

I've been running JH7 for about three weeks now(It was leaked at XDA), and it did squat to improve my gps (It also didn't improve media scanning times from the JH3 test build, but that significantly improved from JF6, stock)

However, people who don't mind root and rom flashing, try out cognition on XDA. My GPS locks in about 1-2 minutes, and it's a solid lock. Not only that, it stays solid while driving. The reason is, samsung it OTAing JH7, which is an august build (H=August) whereas the GPS fix in cognition is ported from the vibrant build JI2 (I = september build), so the captivate is getting a relatively old OTA. In fact, general consensus was, it was just an internal test build, because of the minor improvements.

Just thought I'd give a heads up. Cognition also has a ton of other goodies (a true file system switch for a lag fix, root, bloat removal, mobileAP, true sideloading, a much improved, accurate to the 1% battery meter, and more) Anyone interested, here. Got a little of track, but yeah, this is much improved GPS over anything I've seen. I would barely ever see, much less lock on to a single satellite without it, not I'm getting amazing performance.

Be aware though that if you do flash a non-stock, or the one-click 'stock' (it wasn't) rom, it seems that you won't be able to use the OTA upgrade(s....?) from AT&T.

Lots of reports of this at xda (probably myself included).

The leaked JH7 is not the same as the OTA JH7. Designgears (creator of Cognition) and others have compared files and they are not the same.

My GPS worked the best that it has this morning after the update. Had a lock withing 5 seconds or so.

GPS actually gets a lock after 2 mins. but it is constantly fluctuating. Yesterday when I tried I had accuracy of 19ft but that was standing still didnt try it driving yet.

mine is pretty much the same.. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. still takes forever just to fine my location in maps.

By setting things to the default settings, I was able to pick up 7 satellites (and even an 8th at times) and was able to get a lock within 2 minutes of being outside. I also held that lock as I was walked a block in the city. That's much better than I was doing before.

I had the WI-FI on when I was first trying to get satellites and was only hitting 2. I turned it off and it did seem to grab more satellites. i want to test that out more though because it could have been a coincidence.

Mine is not any better.

Using GPS Test, before the update it would find 2-4 satellites but never connect to any of them. And now after the update it will find 4-6 satellites but never connect to any of them.

I wiped my phone and retained the update. I was able to get 8 sats in view and 6 in use. Tried on my way into town and couldn't maintain a lock the entire way. Approx 20 minutes.

I tested my gps yesterday using google nav and app called gps status. For google nav - it locked in between 5-30secs on 6 attempts at various points on my 25 mile commute. The gps status app showed between 6 and 11 satellites and locked in on 6-11 of them in various ratios (ie 5/6 or 9/11). Gps status app also showed between 16 and 32 ft accuracy - usually settling on 16ft after a minute.

I did do a gps tweak last week and left them "as is" for the update. Don't see a reason to change them back to default yet.

Hence, Day 1 my gps is working well. Before the update it was working maybe 50/50 at best.

My concern is that my gps was working well the first couple weeks of owning the phone - then it got all flaky.

I hope this update doesn't do the same thing.

Add me to the list of those whose GPS still is not working after the update. I got the update yesterday morning and it downloaded fine. I restarted it and got the message that new software was installed. When I try the GPS it finds 6 satellites but doesn't lock in on any of them and two of the satellites fluctuate in and out. On my navigation it keeps saying looking for my location. Also, everytime I turn the phone on I get the message that new software is installed. Weird

I finally was able to update after downloading the JH7 OTA update from XDA and going back to JF6 with ODIN. Reinstalled everything with Titanium Backup and made a good backup of my ROM with ROM manager before I did anything else other than root. Finally got to the point where I could check my GPS. It was the same as before, so I made changes to the settings like I had before I updated, except I left it as Standalone instead of MS-Based and got 10 satellites to lock on. I'm in the same boat as rob6188 - my GPS worked great for about 6 weeks after I tweaked the settings, then it got flaky and stopped working (actually, if I rebooted the phone twice every time it flaked out, it would work again for a week or so). So here are the changes I made to mine to get it to work. Credit to the guys in the Epic forum who talked about changing their Epics to cold start instead of hot start.

Application settings
Session - tracking
Test mode - S/W test
Operation mode - standalone
Start mode - cold start
GPS Plus - on
Dynamic accuracy - on
Accuracy - 50
Skyhook - on
Use PC tool - off

SUPL settings
Server FQDN Type - auto config
Everything else the same

I'm running Cognition with the update mixed into it. I can get locks indoors and outside, it locks on even quicker. I tested it on my way to work, and seemed to follow me as I was driving, maybe just a tad slow though. Granted, I had just opened Maps and had it find my location. My only problem was my screen timeout kept having me to wake my phone up a few times but I'd say that either the fix is working, or it's at least a combo of the rom and the fix that is working.
