HTC EVO 4G LTE - Max Wifi Link Speed? (LAN, not WAN)

Hey everyone! First time poster here...

I wanted to get some input from everyone on the max link speed they've seen when connected to a wireless N network with their Evo LTE. I ask because:

I've had mine for a few weeks now and use it primarily while connected to my wireless network at home. My router advertises 300+450mbps on the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands respectively, but I've only ever been able to connect to it with my Evo at a max of 65mbps on both bands. I realize there are several variables that affect this, and to be clear I do not expect to be able to connect at 300 or 450mbps (if only). But I was hoping to see a 150mbps connection because from what I've gathered, the 802.11 radio in the Evo should be able to support channel bonding (40mhz) and short guard interval (400ns) using a single stream...which should equal a maximum throughput of 150mbps. I found this information here:

AnandTech - The HTC One X for AT&T Review

Granted, this information is for the One X, but I'm under the impression that it shares the same hardware with the Evo LTE in this department:

WLAN and BT 4.0 on the HTC One X is courtesy onboard ?wcnss_wlan? which I take it means the WiFi baseband onboard MSM8960 with some external RF (WCN3660). What?s interesting to me is that this is the first device I?ve seen that will tune 40 MHz channels on 5 GHz. The full breakdown is as follows - single spatial stream 802.11a/b/g/n with 20 MHz channels on 2.4 GHz, 40 MHz channels on 5 GHz, with all modes supporting the short guard interval rates. That means up to a 72 Mbps rate for 2.4 GHz, and 150 Mbps on 5 GHz. Note that the internal WiFi information screens erroneously report 65 Mbps in all conditions even when the MCS negotiated with an AP is higher.

Notice that the last sentence alleges that there is a bug that causes the link speed to display as 65mbps, even if it's actually higher. While this would explain what I'm seeing (because I have verified that other devices can connect to the same router at 300mbps), I haven't been able to find anyone else who can corroborate it. Can anyone here confirm this? I did find a spec sheet that seems to agree the Evo should be able to reach a max speed of 150mbps:

HTC 4G LTE vs EVO 4G - Our Analysis

So what is everyone else's experience in this area? I realize that even if I'm maxing at 65mbps, that is more than enough to browse the web, download apps/roms, etc...especially since that is way more bandwidth than I'm getting from my ISP anyway. But the techie in me just needs to see that 150mbps! :) Has anyone else attained it?

Try using best WiFi performance in your WiFi settings. Also even playing an online game wouldn't require 65 mbps let alone 150...

Re: HTC EVO 4G LTE - Max Wifi Speed?

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried with the Best Wifi Performance option, but I'm still topping out at 65mbps, even standing right in front of the router on the 5ghz band, with no other networks in the area. My understanding is that the best performance option will help with dropped connections but hasn't been reported to boost speeds...unless a slow connection can be attributed to a weak signal.

And I agree, 150mbps is WAY more than I need...but like I said, it's an ego thing :D

Re: HTC EVO 4G LTE - Max Wifi Speed?

Note that the internal WiFi information screens erroneously report 65 Mbps in all conditions even when the MCS negotiated with an AP is higher.

That just means the screen says 65mbps even if it is really higher. So you really could be getting 150mpbs but the fastest the screen will SHOW is only 65mbps.

Re: HTC EVO 4G LTE - Max Wifi Speed?

The router advertises the maximum speeds and throughput. What you're connecting to the router is just as important. I have Verizon FIOS and the max speeds I pay for are 50Mbps. My router isn't going to magically turn that into 300Mbps. I can't imagine that you're actually bringing in an outside connection that is 150Mbps.

The other thing that can affect the speed are other devices connected to the router. If anything is connected that is 802.11g or older, the router will revert every connection to the same, meaning your n-device is now operating as a g-device.

Agreed...and I suspect this may be what's happening, I just can't PROVE it. And I've only seen this claim made in that one article, so I don't know how reliable it is since it doesn't seem to be a documented issue.

You're right, and I understand that I most likely won't be getting the max advertised speeds from the router, I'm just wondering if the link speed I'm seeing is consistent with what other people are seeing, or if I'm getting short-changed so to speak. And I know that a link speed of 150mbps wouldn't translate to a 150mbps connection to the internet since my ISP only provides a max of 30mbps with my service plan. I just feel like I should be getting higher than 65mbps for intra-network traffic.

As far as other devices are concerned, my evo is the only device I own that can utilize a 5ghz network so it has the whole thing to itself (it is set to n-only, since I don't have any devices that are limited to g, even on the 2.4ghz band). There are also no other 5ghz networks in my area, so interference shouldn't be an issue.

Maybe I'm being immature/naive by playing the numbers game, but I was assuming that since it sounds like the LTEVO supports all the pre-reqs for a 150mbps connection, that's what I would see in my wifi settings.

What link speed do you typically see?

Re: HTC EVO 4G LTE - Max Wifi Speed?

You might have to separate the WiFi radio from the rest of the device if you want to see it's true throughput.

The device still has to be a phone, run Android, display graphics, have a clock, etc. while you run a WiFi test. So if the radio/WiFi circuitry is physically capable of a given throughput, that doesn't mean the device has the resources to process that much data.

Ok, that's a good point. But why can't it just lie to me and tell me the max speed it's theoretically capable of connecting at :p Windows certainly doesn't have a problem with that...

What I'm really looking for is whether or not anyone else has seen their link speed higher than 65mbps, or if that's a device-wide "feature". That way I can know if it's something going on in my environment. To clarify, the measuring stick I'm basing this thread off of is the Link Speed in the Sense wifi settings menu:

Yes sir, that's it. Cool, thanks. Anyone else like to share theirs?

Thanks for all the posts so far!

I like my new phone I'm still learning things that why I'm on here so often I still haven't mastered the screenshot my phone keep turning off the way I do it
