HTC One (M8) camera discussion

Re: M8 Camera

To me, its seems like the only thing going for the M8 is the metal design which is beautiful! Bummer about the camera and quality of pics. I guess I'll be waiting for the LG G3 now.

It has a lot going for it IMO, like what they've done with Sense, the speakers are more usable and BlinkFeed is improved. BUT, the camera will be a deal breaker for many.

Re: M8 Camera

Doubling the MP UP would have made a huge difference on the size of the sensor.
Yea, but I'd gladly trade the slightly increased physical thickness of the phone (all of the current flagship models from every brand are already insanely thin) for better picture quality, and I think I wouldn't be the only one. And they could've easily compensated for increased sensor size by simply removing the gimmicky secondary camera :-P

Oh well... Hopefully they'll eventually come to their senses and release the model with a really better camera... Perhaps in new HTC One mini model :-/ Otherwise I'll be waiting for some other manufacturer (perhaps Motorola?) to bring some meaningful camera improvements.

The screen, speakers, and the rest of the device looks pretty great. The camera was the big thing I was looking for though. I guess I'm sticking with my Nexus 5 for a little while longer!

Re: M8 Camera

Add CNet to the list of camera detractors:

"The image quality of test photos backed up my misgivings. While colors were accurate and white balance correct in my experience, both indoors and outside, details appeared soft. Additionally, a deeper look into the One M8's camera performance revealed the phone had difficulty with varied lighting conditions and often blew out bright skies in HDR mode."

Re: M8 Camera

Personally, I don't need the higher MP count. I'm not going to print photos from my phone on canvas or posters. I can see how people can get hung up on a number though. But for the majority who share photos mostly for social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), this spec should be fine.

Not according to the reviews. The lack of MP hurts detail and sharpness even on PC screens.

Re: M8 Camera

I assume the Galaxy S5 will be a better camera based on what I am reading?

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

All the reviews are saying the pictures suck, but there's really nothing wrong with the quality of most of the pictures they upload in said reviews. Sure, they're not as sharp as a higher mp camera would be, but they look pretty good other than that. Pretty good is all most people need for sharing on Facebook, etc... I have my DSLR for any serious shooting.

I'm assuming that as well. I'll wait to read the reviews of the S5, but considering the S4 is beating the M8 in head to head camera tests, I think it's safe to say the 16 MP, Isocell S5 will be better.

Agreed.

Re: M8 Camera

The camera really is the biggest letdown for me. I've looked at a lot of sample images provided by the myriad of reviews, and while they look nice at first glance, you can see artifacts along lines of high contrast and the ballyhooed Duo Camera seems like a fun gimmick more than a truly useful feature you'd turn to every day. I really wonder what HTC would have had to give up had they boosted the camera to 8mp. Obviously it was something, because that spec bump seems like a no-brainer.

I'll reserve final judgment until users get them in their hands and start posting pics, but right now I'm not feeling it.

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

I think for the vast majority of smartphone owners, they want a smartphone camera to be good enough to not have to worry about bringing a dedicated camera. Whether the New One's camera will be good enough for viewing on anything other that it's own screen is questionable and if it's not significantly improved I'd say the answer is no.

Re: M8 Camera

Wow that was quick to have a huge article comparing them.. They had that ready :P.

The one thing I don't like is the variable ambient light source from the sky, for different cameras. If you look at the clouds, and people on the dock, you can see they weren't all snapped in a quick succession. This will lead to differences in brightness for the different pictures.

Overall I think the M8 holds it's own pretty well. As the owner of a DLSR camera, as well as a point and shoot, having the absolute sharpest phone camera, with the highest specs on the market, isn't that important to me.

I wonder if there might be an updated version in the fall with the faster processor and maybe an updated camera.

Re: M8 Camera

We need to see some action shots, anyone get to a verizon store to buy one yet? hurry up with the consumer reviews!

Re: M8 Camera

From AnandTech:

"Ultimately, HTC has solidly improved upon the 2013 One, but in some ways the 2014 version is a bit of a disappointment, something that was almost guaranteed to happen by virtue of how impressive the previous version was with its all-metal unibody build, a camera that was different for the right reasons, and speakers that greatly improved the media consumption experience. Ultimately though, it seems that the two major flaws of the 2013 One, its tall profile and poor daytime camera resolution, have been carried forward. Whether those two flaws are too great to bear compared to everything else on offer is another question entirely, and one that remains to be seen."

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

I really don't see anything wrong with the pictures posted in the reviews. They look good enough to post on social media and send to friends...
