HTC One (M8) camera discussion

Re: M8 Camera

Personally, I don't need the higher MP count. I'm not going to print photos from my phone on canvas or posters. I can see how people can get hung up on a number though. But for the majority who share photos mostly for social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), this spec should be fine.

People think printing is the only reason for higher megapixel count, but there are lots of cases where such a low count creeps in. For example, it's 4mp but it's at 16:9. So if you post to a typical-these-days square format, you're looking at cutting it nearly in half, down to 2.4mp. Even 4:3 is closer to 3mp. If you use digital IS (since they killed OIS), you'll usually lose some megapixels to this too. And digital zoom of any kind is pretty much out of the question at this point.

Re: M8 Camera

It is a shame they went backwards and removed OIS. The camera is what kept me from buying a moto x, and will keep me from buying this. I like everything else, but use the camera a lot, so it is a no go for me. Guess it will be waiting to see the s5, LG, and what the next moto has.

Re: M8 Camera

The camera is a strange move imo. Most people don't carry a DSLR all the time (or even own one) and very few have a compact camera on them 24/7 to grab those snaps that happen out of nowhere, this is what makes smartphone cameras so brilliant. And plenty of people are still printing their snaps judging by the amount of photo albums and frames you see in the shops and online printing services.

It's such a nice looking phone but i think the camera will be a deal breaker for a lot of people.

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

I'm somewhat indifferent on the camera personally. I don't think the shots I've seen are terrible, but they do obviously lack size and some cropping capabilities, but that's a given. Coming from a day 1 Galaxy Nexus, pretty much any cameras on phones are better at this point too. I really only use cameras for Snapchat, Instagram, or Twitter, and instagrams really the only platform I would really care about quality, and most of those I usually end up touching up a bit with snapseed anyway first.

The only really big side effect for me personally is the whole if you wanted to not crop a photo and square it off, quite a lot of empty space is left, but you could always just chop off sides to get it more square before that.

Would have preferred a 6-8 mp equivalent, but I'd say its still a candidate for me but I want to see some more shots.

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

For me, the camera is not a deal breaker. I don't take that many pictures as it is and the sample shots I've seen from the M8 more than satisfy my needs. For the shutterbugs, however, the M8 may not be the best choice.

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

Think I'm just going to pass on this phone. I take a ton of pictures with my phone and usually have it out for all the family party's and get together's. It seems like the camera is the biggest detractor here among some other issues and I can't compromise on having a crappy camera.

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

I'm pretty heavy into photography and having owned an HTC One since the last launch, I can tell you that how you take the picture makes a big difference. Open and click can yield hit and miss results, and if people expect that it does struggle. However, if you take the time to select the focal point and/or lock the exposure by holding your finger down it changes the result dramatically.

The worst culprit, however, is a smudged lens. The 2013 HTC One is VERY sensitive to fingerprints on the lens and I can see examples in the 2014 One sample shots released today where the lens was smudged. Wiping it off before pictures makes a big difference.

It is fair, however, to say you must work a bit to get a good shot which is why there will be a range in reactions and samples. Remember this.

I'll have mine tomorrow and expect to do a proper camera review with it up against a point and shoot as well as a high end.

I'm excited to point out how poor HTC One M8 photos are going to look on Instagram.

Re: M8 Camera

Of course it's in last place when they fudge the results of their own article. Why even show low-light (Night) if it's not in the conclusion... NVM, it doesn't matter...

"The final score for each phone represents its combined rating, but note that we're only taking into account the Details, Color representation and Indoor categories in the final score. We're factoring all the others (such as Night and Panorama) out, since those represent situations where users are less likely to take images in. Video recording isn't included either, since we consider it a separate thing from photo-taking. We've done this in order to end up with a final rating that is representative of a camera's performance in those areas, which we think are most important to users."

It scores low, but not significantly lower than the other phones - 13% worse than the average score. If you don't own a dedicated camera then maybe think about a different phone.Otherwise, I don't think it will matter.

I wonder if this is because the source photos are 4mp and are being even further compressed by IG and their processing. Pity really...

Personally I think this cam is nothing special

How is new One's camera, when compared directly to Galaxy Note 3 & S5? (indoor no-flash photos only)

These "tips" you give apply to all camera phones, and doesn't make HTC's optics any more competitive than they are.

You can spend 10 minutes framing and setting up a shot, using a tripod with voice shutter, fiddling with settings, and making sure the lens is flawlessly clean and unobstructed.

It still won't make this camera take detailed shots or not blow out stuff in varying light conditions.

I will wait for the DPReview review to come out, but I don't expect this camera to outperform the One's camera except marginally, and it comes as no surprise that it compared poorly with others except in very specific (and rather dark) situations.

This was one of the easiest way to make the One BETTER, and they completely dropped the ball. It's as if they are hell-bend on selling less phones instead of more...

There are a few tricks that you can use with higher MP cameras to still get a decently detailed image on FB/Instagram. Your options are quite limited with that resolution.

Keep in mind the competion was last years flagships, it would do even worse against the new crop.

Re: HTC One M8 Camera

They say it will be < 300 ms focus time, the new background blur feature, and also just the camera itself with field of depth. I personally liked the blur effect feature but I am also curious how it will handle moving objects. I know Samsung can have issues with blurry photos (from experience)... not all the time but it does happen usually with moving objects.

What do you guys think about it?

Sent from my T-Mobile Note 3 using AC Forums.

Samsung kinda fixed the moving blur issue though compared to the S5 with their Panning mode, according to these pics from a review site
