HTC One (M8) camera discussion

While that's a fair question, I also don't need to take significantly better pictures than I was three months ago. None of the iPhone fans have been clamoring for a better camera. Why should I care if this camera is only as good as that one?

If the M8's camera is as good as the iPhone 5s' then it is stellar indeed. No one would be complaining about it.

Looking at the actual pictures he took during that review, I think the camera seems pretty capable, especially if you're not printing 8x10 glossies of all your photos.

This is actually just wrong. You can certainly make an 8x10 print from a 4 mp image. Just make sure you stand a few feet away when you view it. If you pull out the magnifying glass it wont look as sharp as a 16 mp image. That said, the larger (2 micron) pixel size be a good trade-off in camera performance to image sharpness.

I'm not stating that it is. Admittedly, I don't have a very critical eye for that kind of thing. However, there have been more than a few reviews saying it's comprable and most of the complaints are coming from people who don't actually own the phone.

I'm not necessarily looking for a phone camera that takes professional quality images that can be blown up, printed, and hung on a wall. That's what my Sony NEX is for. But if I don't have my NEX and come upon something worth remembering, I want my phone camera to at least take pictures that I can look at later on a desktop computer or high res tablet without cringing. 4MP photos really only look good when viewed on a phone or uploaded to Facebook / Instagram.

Seriously??? A 4 MP image is 2,666X1520. Just what resolution is your monitor? According to this website: Digital Camera Resolution you can get photo quality prints from a 4 mp sensor up to 8x10! Damn people, wake TF up!

Re: Share your HTC One (M8) photos, videos, and camera thoughts!

Thanks but no thanks to carrying around a dedicated camera. You people can keep wailing and crying that out all year but it won't change the fact that a phone with a subpar camera is a deal breaker.

I don't want a dedicated camera. I don't need one. I just need a good camera on my smartphone and this one does not qualify.

Not sure if the image capture system is sub par or not. But if it is, it has little to do with the pixel count. Sheep....

Re: Share your HTC One (M8) photos, videos, and camera thoughts!

Those photos make me cry. At first glance they're beautiful and provide a peek at the phone's possibilities. And then I blew them up to full size, and the magic was instantly lost with all of the artifacts. Just imagine what this would have been like with just a bit better resolution, like 8 MP.

With all things being equal, those photos would probably look like garbage with an 8 MP sensor. Smaller pixels = lower dynamic range and much worse low light performance.

It wasn't in the M7.

That resolution means nothing if the data doesn't create a clear image.

Many people are saying this phone needs more MP, including myself, but really that isn't the problem. The problem is that the camera isn't one you can rely on to take clear, detailed pictures or pictures that use any zoom or cropping. One way to address this deficiency would be to add MP. Even if it meant decreasing the sensor pixel size I think it would be a tradeoff worth making.

I get tired of the camera snobs telling me megapixels done matter and I must be stupid if I can't figure it out. It does matter. My Note 3 out performs my wife's HTC One almost every time in picture quality. My htc one x took better pictures than the One did. HTC went backwards with the camera. Also you can take amazing pictures with a phone. I have printed out numerous pictures that look incredible so please stop with the snobbery....it gets old. Having said that this is a great phone but the camera makes it a no go for me.

Megapixels do seem to matter in the real world....

I'm very sorry but you're just plain wrong. If the Note 3 takes better pics then it's EXTREMELY unlikely that the reason is the number of pixels. The quality of the optics and software processing are so much more important. I've heard some complaining about the AWB. If this is indeed a problem, it's a software problem and not related the the pixel count of the sensor.

You don't appear to have any idea what you're talking about.

Brilliant, seriously.

All you have to do is look at the images, it's quite clear the M8 camera is not a huge improvement over the M7 which was barely acceptable a year ago.

Dude just read this thread. GolferChris has posted some awesome pics but it's really beside the point. The point is, the pixel count is really not terribly important when determining camera quality. A 4 mp image will easily create 4x7 photo-realistic prints.

I'm not saying it is. I'm saying this camera isn't a big improvement over the M7s and that one wasn't good. It's the only thing I really wasn't happy with on my M7. It's also silly to think that a 4 MP camera is going to be enough for most users. If that was the case we would still see most of the point and shoot cameras out there sporting a 4 MP sensor. I'm not looking for my phone to replace my DSLR, but if it can't replace a point and shoot camera it isn't acceptable.

I wanted to get really excited about the M8, but seeing the camera, the reviews it's getting and the images people are posting I'm just not interested. It's unfortunate that HTC crippled such a great device.

SI want to be able to zoom in on my kid from across a basketball court and get a clear image, that shouldn't be too much to ask.

This is bordering on hilarious. That's a tough shot to get, depending in the lighting in the gym of course, with a real DSLR without $1000's of dollars in glass.

I've posted enough for you to think about. Ignore it if you want.

Seeing as how I own both devices, the camera is definitely a huge improvement. You can look at pictures posted online and go to a store and demo it for a short amount of time but when you actually use them both in real world situations you will clearly see they improved upon it.

I think the bottom line HTC should have asked was does the camera produce images as good or superior to its competition in oft-used scenarios. To me, there's no excuse for the answer to that question to be 'No.'

And you are entitled to your own opinion. Thanks for sharing. I personally think it is comparable to a lot of other phones and in some cases it is superior. The hardware is only as good as the user
