HTC One (M8) camera discussion

Calling BS on this one. If your phone camera took pics good enough to print then guess what!? You'd print them! If you own and HTC One M8, your phone is simply incapable of producing printable quality images and that's the reason you're not printing them.

I'm a photographer by profession. There isn't a camera phone in existence that in my eyes is worth printing. The file sizes are just too compressed and not a whole lot of data left behind. White balance, color depth, noise, and post sharpening are all things that haunt every camera phone. Not to any fault of manf the sensors are just too small.

These are the things I print. Don't be ignorant next time.

When something gets that much hype and doesnt live up to it, slagging is bound to happen.
But it doesn't mean we have to beat it to death. Overall as Ambassador ffejj said, I too have the HTC One (M7) and I couldn't be happier with the pictures. Sure its not stand alone camera quality and it never will be but for what I use it for with capturing moments of the kids and family for personal and social media it suits me fine as I'm sure it does many others.

You want high end quality buy a stand alone camera. You want on the go awesomeness in your pocket from your smartphone then take your pick of any of the flagships in the last year up to now and you will can't really go wrong.

Respectfully, I think that's quite an oversimplification. You CAN get high end quality pics from a smartphone. All flagships cameras are not created equal. In every comparison I've seen, the M8 trails last year's flagships in the camera department. I suspect when the embargo is lifted on the S5, the reviews were shower praise on the camera in both the refining of the camera app/software, speed of focus and picture quality. Likewise the G3 and Z2 when they hit the States.

Great quote from Evan at PhoneDog:" First and foremost, the camera. No, not the cameras, just the one. The secondary camera, which exists solely to grab depth of field information from any photo you might take, is fine. It might be a gimmick to some people, but it's a pretty great feature, if you ask me. And it makes the One M8 stand out, so that's good. However, the main camera, that 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera, is still not cutting it for me. In absolutely perfect lighting, it takes great photos and captures plenty of details. But, in any other lighting situation? Meh. I understand that HTC wants to disprove the megapixel "myth," and that's fine. However, it's not really working out (yet)."

What would you change about HTC's One M8? | PhoneDog

If I may hazard a slightly informed guess, I'd say the the M8 was the most hyped phone in recent memory. The camera was probably THE biggest source of speculation. When it was revealed on 3/25 and that it was essentially the same rear module with a gimmicky "duo" camera thrown in, there was a lot of disappointment since many folks were hoping for an improvement over the M7 in the camera department, particularly in the area of detail and image quality. Virtually ever review that came out after the embargo broke, including Phil's, noted the lack of improvement, which I think has led to the current feeding frenzy. When something gets that much hype and doesnt live up to it, slagging is bound to happen.

I honestly understand what you're saying, I just think there are a lot of bandwagon haters.

If someone posted objectively saying they prefer the S5 camera images more or the G2 that's totally understandable and acceptable because they both take very nice shots. Really impressed with the S5 actually for its overall package.

There are a lot of people (myself included) that think the M8 takes very nice shots as well. They congregate here to share their pics and what not only to find themselves on the defensive due to all the bashing.

Phil also said this lol (I'm grasping)

I think I might have been a little harsh o it in our review. I'm getting better with it.

I hear you but as I remember last year when people directly compared the s4 and the m7 the hate was really palpable with fan boy accusations flying. This cycle there is none of that since the releases are weeks apart. This year seems much more sedated lol

I know lol it's like people prepare for battle during new phone season.

Couldn't HTC have upped the count to 6 or 8? People on Reddit were saying it would have made the camera unit too big and would have made an unsightly hump on the back of the phone.

It's been reported that due to HTCs lack of buying power they had to use the same supplier from last years 4.1mp module. It was cheaper to add the duo sensor than to buy a more expensive higher mp unit.

It's just hard for me to wrap my mind around all the hate for a phone camera. I own the M7 and love the camera experience. I took some pics of my daughter and her friend at a concert this past weekend (it was dark) and they turned out great. Now I checked out the M8 and and I'm digging the refocus/blur background.

I think the M8 has a really nice camera loaded with features. Can't imagine anyone calling it poor or crummy.

The reason the m7 camera bugs me is because of the lack of detail when zooming. I'm not trying to harp on the camera for no reason, but I've compared the g2 with the m8 and the g2 has stellar detail. On the other hand I feel the camera software is awesome on the m7 and m8.

Keeping the pixel size at 2 microns, doubling the count to 8 would obviously increase the footprint of the sensor and a new optics package would be required. I'm not an optical engineer so I can't say for sure if a hump would have been required to maintain the fast f2.0 lens but it very well could.

Well digital zooming (ie cropping) is the one area where those mega pixels do make a difference. That said, if the difference between a 4 and an 8 is really that huge it's far more likely to be a focusing issue.

Well I think the g2 is a 13 mp camera. And I'm a detail junky. That's why the HTC one isn't ideal for me haha.

Its a few pages back but essentially we found out that it wouldn't help much if they did. Apparently (and unfortunately) the count would have to be 12 or more for that to be the solution in any way other than uninformed perception.

I don't mind the 4mp since I wont be printing anything from my phone. What I am having trouble getting used to is how it doesn't do the best of job to get the right exposure when your outside on a sunny day with half the picture being the sky and half being landscape. It either wants to expose the landscape properly or the sky but not both. I don't like to compare phones but I can't say I haven't used a phone with a better camera that's at least a year old. Who knows maybe a software update will fix that. It's such a great phone outside of that though.

You are talking about dynamic range and the M8 "should" be superior to other phones in this respect. Is there a histogram function on the camera?

Yes, thank you, couldn't think of what that was called.

I will have to mess around with it...I don't think so though.

Hmmm, you do realize the argument don't you? The article addresses the question of the number of pixels effect on image quality. It's PRECISELY what we are discussing. Sheesh.
That's what YOU'RE discussing. What the rest of us are saying is that the images this camera takes, especially if there is any zoom or cropping, lack detail.

Couldn't HTC have upped the count to 6 or 8? People on Reddit were saying it would have made the camera unit too big and would have made an unsightly hump on the back of the phone.
Then maybe they decrease the pixel size in order to increase the number of MP.

The problem again with this camera isn't the resolution unless you are looking to crop (zoom) or print. The biggest challenge is that it is calibrated to pick up fine details within a limited dynamic range meaning that if there are intense brights and darks in the scene it won't do well across the spectrum. For many common shots the camera is great, for others HDR (I'd use third party app) works best.

Here is a short write-up that explains this using a histogram and some samples to illustrate it: Productastic | Tech, Toys and other fun stuff by Heath Cajandig
