HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Just start a case with HTC Support and send it in for warranty repair.
I was under the impression that sending it to HTC would result in having to pay for repairs because they claim abuse is the only way it could happen?

They aren't claiming that, people in this forum are. I will let you know what they say about mine by Wednesday. If mine goes through no one should have a problem getting theirs fixed free. HTC even sent me a prepaid shipping label to send the phone in.

Samsung is claiming abuse for the cracked lens on the S5 but have not heard of HTC doing that on the M8.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Wish I saved the conversation, but the rep at HTC confirmed to me that the rear lens is plastic. I just sent my phone in to HTC. They should get it Monday. Here is hoping. Why would they pit a plastic lens on a phone focused on design?

I knew immediately the camera lens was plastic. It's baffling that HTC decided to go this route since a camera lens should be glass to avoid getting scratched. Such a premium device and poor choice of material used for a camera lens.

I think the lens is a mixed bag. There are pictures I have seen that clearly look like glass cracks which would indicate a glass lens. I can tell you there is no way mine would crack like glass. I say this because just before I sent it in for warranty repair I tried using a pencil eraser on the outer rim of the lens to see if it would make a difference in the distortion.. it did not, but I could clearly see it flexing when I press down on it a bit. Other people have said it is solid like glass. Mine was clearly NOT glass because I am pretty sure glass would not flex like that.

Yours could have been plastic but thin glass will flex pretty substantially. I'm referring to something like a glass screen protector, they are a lot more flexible than I thought they would be.

Did they tell you it's your one advantage repair? That would be insane, to have to use that to fix a design flaw.

Mine is getting scratched only had it for one month..never dropped always in case. Like the phone a lot but makes me want to sell it and try out the S5 before it gets worse.

My m7 that I had for a year looks better than my m8

Hello guys I'm from Malaysia.

I'm very certain the lens is glass. Been using this M8 for a month now, no scratches.
I guess it's the temperature?

I was thinking the same thing, but I live in Monterey California, which is cool. Malaysia is way hotter and humid. I don't think that's the issue. I am thinking it's the material.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

That's terrible. I can't believe a phone with such a premium build uses plastic on the lens.

HTC One M8 - All aluminum (or metal, I forgot). Plastic lens.

Samsung Galaxy S5 - Plastic build but glass camera lens.

Hope this gets solved for everyone effected. I wish we could just get a properly built device all around. It is 2014 after all.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (Verizon)

The GS5 has its own problems with the cracked camera lens, broken charging flap, black screen requiring a reboot.

I'm on my 2nd phone as this as happened to both my m8's exactly the same as if it is smudged , looks like mist inside the lens but its on the outside , had the dot case and previous phone had the m8 case on at all times , it is in my pocket with nothing in there at all ever, my pics look faded round the edges now , gotta be the worst build ever on a mobile phone my one x had no case for 2 yrs and never had a problem with the lens even without a cover

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

WOW!

Just saw this thread and as soon as I read it, I checked my camera lens...

Major scratching..... Phone has been in a case since day one and I have only used a clean microfiber cloth to clean...

It hasn't caused any picture issues yet.... But from what I have read, it will cause issues soon...

Has anyone had any luck with HTC on the issue consistently on getting it repaired or replaced?

I have had my phone since release on Verizon...

Lego.

Mine shows 'in repair' right now at the repair center. I'll let you know in a few days.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

First time poster here...

So I found this thread after having this issue for awhile. It was annoying the hell out of me and and I wound up trying to scratch the lens more to test what could make it scratch. To my surprise it started to clear up! It's a film on the plastic/glass. The earlier poster who said to clean it with toothpaste and a toothbrush was onto something. I believe that they left a film for protection (whether it's UV or something of that nature) on and it's scratching off. Trust me and try this. I was astonished. The scratching was also happening to the little camera as well. This phone has never left a case from day one. I'm positive it's a coating. Now if it's necessary is another story. But my pics are wayyy clearer again.:D

You're welcome! Toothpaste works well to polish quite a few things. Glad it worked for you!
