Which article? BTW, I have an FA~ phone and it's a glass lens cover, no issues whatsoever.

The impression I got is that they used an experimental coating on some phones and it didn't work out. It's not some Advantage plan conspiracy as was hinted at earlier.

I had a replacement phone given to me after a wifi issue i was having, both phones S/N start with HT, no issues with lense scratching on either. I shall consider myself lucky, that would REALLY bother me.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

That article was a blogger assumption, not fact. We did not get enough data to determine it was FA phones only.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I was told by an HTC rep to bring it back to where I bought it from (best buy) so I'm gunna try tmrw and see what they say..

Here's the best photo I could take of my scratches under poor lighting. You can't see them all in this shot particularly those that go over the lens opening.

I was joking about the conspiracy. :)

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I have figured out what causes the lense hazing. The phone getting hot, weakens the protective coating causing it to be easily scratched or haze. I was looking through my gallery and saw that friday, my phone was taking perfectly clear photos, I didn't notice the hazing till Saturday night, the only thing I did Saturday was go on a long car ride. I was playing alot of games and listening to music for a couple hours straight and my phone got really hot, I didnt think anything of it, since i had owned a m7 before the m8, which got really hot too.

So to test my theory, i took a heat gun and heated the front facing camera, which at the time was perfectly clear. Using a infrared thermometer, i measured the lens to be 115-120F. At which point the hazing started to happen. Proving my theory.

I have another theory, part of the reason why almost only people with cases are getting this, is because the case provides insulation, not allowing the phone to properly cool. Idk how to prove that one though.

TLDR: Heat causes the coating on the lens to weaken/haze

It's all downhill from here. Sorry to say it's going to get worse. The haze of death is coming to your photos soon.

HTC needs to address this.

The least they should do is figure out an official method to remove that gunk and let us know.. I would be fine with that

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Man its crazy because I got my phone about 3 weeks ago and I am an avid phone person. I like to keep all my devices in perfect condition and had a case on it since Day 1 when I walked out the store. Just lastnight I was taking a picture and started noticing that it was taking forever to focus and the picture began to come out blurry. I took a look at my camera and it looked like someone took keys too it! scratches everywhere. So I came into work this morning and decided to look on the net to see if anyone else has had this problem and I find all you guys! lol. Very frustrated about this and trying to figure out what my next move is going to be.

Welcome to the club! Lol...

I'd go ahead and give your carrier a call first and see if they can replace it free of charge. HTC is withholding information to other carriers that this is a known issue, so you may not be able to get a replacement through your carrier. If that's the case, give HTC a ring.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I'm on the fence with this camera issue... I bought my M8 on April 11th...i have not noticed any crazy scratches and I wipe my lens with my shirt daily... Had I not read this post I would be fine... But now I'm just paranoid! Sometimes I think I see a scratch but I wipe it and it's gone... Not sure if I'm lucky or if this will happen to me soon... My S/N starts with FA... Im freaking out... Just venting...

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

About two weeks ago, I noticed a weird haze whenever I was taking pictures... got frustrated, tried to factory reset my settings, etc, nothing worked.

I've since found this forum and used my fingernail to wipe away whatever gunk was covering the lens and my pictures are back to normal.

I'm pretty anal with my phone and I love this device, but ... I'm pretty annoyed that this is going to be an issue for the rest of time I have this thing.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I starting to think most of you are OCD. It's just a film over the lens that can be cleaned off with a little work. Why its there I don't know but I think its just a protective film from the manufacturing process that was never cleaned off.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Not sure it's just a film... the lens was great for the first 1.5 months. Pictures looked fantastic... then the hazy effect started. If it was part of the manufacturing process, wouldn't it have been bad from the get go?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I had the same issue loads and loads of scratches and horrible photograph quality and was more than concerned and I googled and found all this info and I used Windex and toothpaste and made a circular motion on the camera with a q tip and it seemed to remove some sort of film on the lens, besides a fine ring around the edge (which leads me to believe it was a sort of film over it) and the same exact thing happened to my front camera until I scrubbed it off, same issues with my brother in laws m8 as well. Don't fret fellow HTC lovers.
