HTC One (M8) Photos & Videos Thread

@KIBBSTER nice pictures but the colors lack some life. In the first picture, the kid on the swing, the sky is completely white but there is some blue around the tree branches, why is that?

You are right.
That was the first day I had the phone and had it set on tap to take picture so I didn't know about tapping to set exposure and left it on full auto.
I've found when you leave the camera to it's own devices and take pictures against the sky it tends to over expose the sky and cause chromatic aberration.

I'll have to try again at some point by setting exposure manually - not sure it'll ever be perfect but I'm pretty sure I could improve on that now.

I'm sorry but from viewing the photos in this thread and being a photographer the photos shown are flat. For the portrait shots look at the eyes there is no life in them none. You should seem the gleam in an eye whether it's a person or a pet there are none.

Are you really marking down a smartphone camera because of the lack of "The spark of life"/reflection in people's eyes!?

lol

Seriously :)

I said pictures are flat gave example of eyes. Colors are flat no dynamic range. Why is it folks read and reword as they see fit? The camera overall just isn't there. Its not about mp count its the sensor being used that's creating this.

So one of the phone cameras known for its large dynamic range doesn't have a large dynamic range?
I don't think you are going to find what you're looking for in this generation of phones tbh.

Oh really funny my RAZR maxx HD seems to fair really well with dynamic range and its two yrs older than current flagship phones

Agreed, and if ANY phone is adding life and sparkle to people it's the M8. Even the haters admit it excels at people and pets, they attack it on landscapes.

Are you referring to a catch light in the eyes? Any modern phone will show that if there is light to reflect. If that is what you are referring to that is a stupid comment. If you take a picture without a light to reflect, i.e., low light, no reflecting light source, there will be no catch light.

That is a nice shot. It has little to do with the camera though. It is about subject, composition and timing. I won't go all critical about the blown reflections on the leaves or the meh sky. It is a phone after all. I would be proud of the shot.

Sure the camera can catch it without light or not. Here's a shot taken outdoors no sunlight and no flash zoom in and look at her eyes and this was a distant shot.

Re: HTC One (M8) Photo's & Video Thread

Wow that fU-focus thing is pretty cool. Too almost all the pictures are either too soft or blown out from this phone :(.

I have to agree the pictures all look flat, a lot of noise in some and lack of details in others. Perhaps some of this can be corrected with a software update? Dynamic range looks to be poor as well, but not sure how it compares with others like the S5 as far as dynamic range...

There are plenty of examples in this thread of the same thing with the M8. Come on, be fair.

Be fair or be honest? I'm being honest I shoot photography every week and I know what I see when I look at photos and all photos I've viewed on a calibrated monitor all shows that this specific model phone the pictures are flat.yes I know its a phone but I've posted examples of pictures that phones are capable of producing some much better shots than the M8. For some it may not matter for others it does. I don't expect professional DSLR type shots but I'd expect it do better than a 2 year old phone.

Although it's probably not fair on the camera because he's 6 months old and doesn't have any pigment in his eyes yet.

I think it's also fair to say that this camera has been geared towards quick pictures for sharing on social media and playing with filters not for art galleries.
It may not be ideal for professionals but it wows the majority of people who use it and that's more important than a massive dynamic range.

There are two types of photographers.
People who take the picture for the picture itself and people who take the pictures for the memories they contain.
One requires precision and accuracy as well as talent the other requires speed, convenience and adaptability.

It's not hard to see which way HTC have gone and if that's not the right way for you then move on to a different marquee.
Slagging off someone's camera that isn't going to magically become what you want it to be achieves very little apart from annoying people that are otherwise quite happy.

Especially if you don't even own the phone.

Quoted because it deserves repeating. Thank you. I can't find credibility in anyone who seeks out and perpetuates arguments for the sake of spoiling other's fun. I'm always curious to find the positives and the negatives, and see what discoveries others have had. But proselytizing against a phone cam? Really?

Actually your photo looks way better than most others I have been looking at! maybe there is hope! I was thinking I will be disappointed but we will see in a few days. I know everyone was upset about the MP amount but I am not, just a little disappointed in the sensor and or image processing from what I was seeing. lots of blown out skys, and soft images.

My Parents got rid of their Droids because they did not like the camera but I always manged to get decent shots (this phone is 4 years old now).

Or my current Droid Razr Maxx which was decent for macros, the one my paretns always compained abotu how bad the camera was. But I was even able to take decent macros (no refocusing). The noise is present but it is well processed in this shot IMO.

Can't wait to join the party and post some M8 pics this weekend. We need more macro shots in this thread. I just hope I'm not downgrading, and I have high expectations due to the hype. Will I still be able to pull at least this much detail with my new M8 phone? Notice the sky isn't blown out in the last one where the kid crashed into my work. I just hope I can achieve the similar or better results. Alot of photography is the photographer not the camera, although that only goes so far if the sensor is poor or the processing isn't refined. I have always considered my Razr Max phone to have a decent camera though, but it really suffers in low light conditions, and is blown away by my Mothers I-phone since she can achieve great results without much effort.

I think it's fair to say the camera probably isn't the best at all times but it's rarely terrible and often it's reasonable and on occasions awesome!
;)

I will agree, bright outdoor locations can cause problems with blown highlights and chroma.
But it doesn't mean it can't take great landscape shots in daylight, it requires a bit more knowledge/effort/luck to get superb pictures IMHO
Macro - Oh now you're talking - Throw this camera in someones face and it'll take a great shot almost without fail and without trying!
Then you've got ufocus which loves portraits.
That insanely fast focus and shot speed.
Decent colour balancing with vibrant colours that generally manage to avoid over saturating.

Generally the only people moaning about the 4MP are people that don't even have the phone... strangely.

Case closed. If you don't recognize it then you are just trolling.
