HTC One M9: ArsTechnica review - outperforming M8, 6hr web battery, dated design

Re: Ars review is out, outperforming M8, 6hr web battery, dated design

LOL!
As soon as I stop laughing I'll read beyond the first break. Dude wrote this article while angry.

Wow. That really is interesting if you're into analyzing reviews An oddly disproportionate portion of the article was spent on the HTC corporation. I really want a few detailed camera reviews, but this one had a comparison where it actually praised the photo with blow-out brightness as best - I wasn't as convinced. I wasn't convinced by the argument that Sense is bad but fan created themes are good. Nor was I convinced by the argument that HTC should not provide HTC apps when the Play Store has excellent options. Especially harping on Gallery, the HTC app I use daily.

A review that makes me think more about the reviewer than the reviewed.

"HTC's next earnings report—this phone stands no chance against the tougher-than-ever competition."
The '69 Mets stood no chance either. Look how that turned out.

This fart blossoms knickers are in a twist. Did someone at HTC kill your cat, Ron?

I have read the review and cannot agree with most of the opinions stated. The M9 is a really nice device. Yes, HTC should try to do more than iterate, but that doesn't make the M9 a bad phone.
The only thing I agree is that the next earnings report will be bad...

That was a brutal review, just not what I expected from ARS. HTC may have missed the mark but they still do a lot of things right and Sense 7 along with their beautiful apps are still leading the pack. Not cool ARS.

None of you have stock in HTC. People who invest in HTC want to make money. They expect a return on their investments. That's the bottom line. Doesn't really matter if 8 people here think the phone is great. What matters to HTC is the masses who won't purchase the phone because the look is tired and the camera sucks. I read comment after comment of people who want a different looking device.

It read as if the author had a chip on his shoulder. Seemed like he was in a bad mood when he wrote it or something. He seemed to grip on the M9 being a small change over the M8 rather than reviewing the M9 on its own merits.

But it is what it is. If that's how he felt, then he has every right to voice it.

Ars Technica is supposed to be a serious publication, but this review is unprofessional and very disappointing. They don't have to like the device, but the whole review seems to be really unfair.
The M9 could be much better, but it's still the best looking phone out there. It still has unique features, like the speakers and Blinkfeed. The new Sense is also very good.
The only problem I see with the device is battery life and that it gets warm. If HTC manages to solve these issues and improve the camera in low light situations, then the M9 will be really great.

One thing for sure... As he mentioned HTC is in trouble next earnings report. Cmon guys its not a coincidence that there are are so many negative reviews. Is there even a single product review where anyone confidently says that this is the phone to buy? Everyone complained about camera, most complained about heat, battery life and power button.

Whatever it is I agree that this will be a brutal year for HTC in terms of M9 sales. They can only hope that their low and mid end phones do better and keep them in the game.

Yeah, HTC has been very focused on their mid range phones. Seems like they have been doing very well in that category. I almost feel like the M9 was sabotaged. That or Chou was full of himself. I'm going to say their head design guy left because he was either forced to leave or he didn't like the direction the company was going. Probably nobody wanted a remix of the M7/M8. Hell, they could have done an M7 remix and people would have loved it. Thin, nice sized battery, a flat back (M7 rocked back/forth on flat surface),and 8 UP camera. Maybe I should work for HTC.

Couple thoughts:
- I never understood why Android phones get panned if they look the same from one year to the next (especially if they already look good), and Apple phones don't.
- I never understood all the love for the HTC One in the first place though, to be honest. Those large black bezels are hideous. And something about the color of the aluminum they use always seemed cold and worn. I never liked the look personally. A 5" screen on a 5.5" body doesn't make sense to me. It's the same reason, I probably would never get an iPhone. 4.7" is too small and 5.5" with the large top and bottom bezels is too big.
- HTC's cameras have always been junk. The two most popular phones are iPhone and Galaxys. Surprise, surprise, they also have the best cameras. Cameras are very important to most people.

I understand that people have different tastes, and that's fine. HTC could have gone two ways with the M9, but it's not as easy as a choice as some would assume. Do you take a phone that many have said is the best and most beautiful, and make it better? Or do your throw it out and try to figure something completely new out, and hope it sticks. Yes, they took the safe path, and for a company that is just getting a profit under it's belt thanks to the M7 and M9, it's not an unreasonable decision. I was with the crowd that wanted a dramatic glass screen, but hey, it is what it is. The Karmann Ghia only had three exterior changes in nearly 20 years, but I still get girls showing on my porch asking about it. Sometimes beauty is beauty. I'm expecting HTC to do something dramatic for the M10, with the M9 buying them time. I hope.

Now about the review: It's not really a review... it's a bashing, and I'm calling outright BS on a lot of things. Heat? 102 degrees is 4 degrees warmer than normal body temperature. Yeah, 4 degrees will burn off your finger prints and singe the hair off your head. Have a relative that just passed away? Forget cremation costs and just toss an M9 in the box with 'em.
The M8 gets to 103 degrees while gaming, 105 while bench marking. The M4 hit 113 degrees while gaming, and probably should be banned from Egypt to protect the Great Pyramids from burning to the ground.
Aluminum is thermally efficient at moving heat, so when the battery and SoC get busy, you will feel it quick. No need to panic, it's just doing a good job. No need to worry that your two rounds of "Leo's Fortune" has had a measurable impact on global warming.

And anybody slamming Sense like that is obviously got a different take on reality. Even folks that love TouchWiz acknowledge that Sense is smooth and fast. I have not used an M9 in person yet, but Sense on the M8 is flawlessly fast. Now, the power button move I'll agree with, as I preferred it on the top. I use an M8 to record athletic events, and the tripod clip will not work with the M9.

The last items that stand out in the bashing sess... er, I mean article, are that the speakers are not necessary. The list of devices that have better sound is zero at last count. Even an audio measurement specialist (who tests JBL and Bose speakers for a living), said they were better than any phone, and better than most tablets as well. Yeah, well, other phones don't have that much space used by the speakers and chambers, and they don't sound as good either. And the big news flash that the author missed the memo on? Apple iPhone 6 has bigger bezels...
