HTC One M9 overheating, like crazy.

What's weird is that it showed that the screen stayed on when it shouldn't

Could that be linked to the battery thermal issue?

That is odd. This alludes to what another posted mentioned about the cores being maxed out while on the charger. Rogue app? Nasty wakelock? Unless your friend happened to take screenshots of running apps and processes, it would be impossible to pinpoint.

He still has that phone with him, as he's away and can't get a replacement right away. I'll have to ask him to note which apps are running on his phone before he replaces it.

It hasn't overheated again (so far), but he's still getting a replacement for peace of mind. I suggested getting a new charger as well for extra piece-of-mind after what you said about the charger.

Does he have anything set to auto-update? If an update process got hung or malfunctioned and kept running it could cause processors to go into overdrive maybe?
The only weird time mine got pretty hot was when I was transferring 60GB of music to my micro sd card. I had it plugged into my computer, and the USB couldn't keep up with the processor. I was losing charge pretty quickly and the phone got hot. I didn't think to check the temperature, but it was the hottest it ever got.

Haven't got any info yet, but I showed him this thread and he should be posting his point-of-view soon.

As he actually owns the phone, he can explain his situation a lot better than I could.

Has he tried to clear cache, hard reset? Does he power cycle often? was the unit recently updated?
Many unanswered / unasked questions.
The knee jerk reaction is to claim bad phone and get a replacement, when most of the time its a software glitch and a wipe fixes it.
Unless i missed it reading all the replies.

He still has that exact phone, so we'll be trying whatever we can to find the culprit.

But I think he's dead-set on a replacement after that experience

I'm the friend with the phone!

I woke up and went to take my phone off charge (it had been on charge overnight for about 5 hours) and it was crazy hot. It burned me (not to the point where it leaves a mark though).

The phone is running the latest ota update from HTC.

Stock charger and everything. I'm going to try and get the phone replaced once I get back from the trip I'm on. On a unrelated note I broke the camera lens on the phone too so I think a replacement will help with that too (obviously that was my own fault but the battery issue needs to be fixed). Also the phone now gets hotter than before the screenshots were taken. Normally it was around 40c now on charge it goes to 45-50c instead.

How in the world did it get hotter than it did?

Overheats, doesnt charge but yet he cant exchange it,,, why?

Via my HTC One M9...

I will talk out of my [language removed] and say that I suspect that your problem isn't related to the charger that all. The underlying portion of the HTC Sense software does a pretty good job of monitoring the charging cycles and will display a warning/notification if it detects any anomalies in the current being supplied to the battery. There may be other instances when it can detect scenarios with excessive power being discharged from the battery. One thing that puzzles me is how it managed to reach those temps with the display powered off?

The battery chart shows that the screen stayed on when it shouldn't

Ah.. I missed that detail. Thanks. In that case I could see the temps being higher than normal, but not to the point where it should be uncomfortably hot to the touch. My vote still goes to a process hogging CPU cycles or keeping an aggressive wake lock during charging.

I completely agree with Habiib, i think you have a rogue app or an issue with an OTA that caused the CPUs to run when not needed. That goes back to my original post.
Perform a hard reset and that should fix the issue. HTC will not warranty a unit with a broken camera lens, thats considered customer abuse and not a manufacturers defect. Plus there are steps to see if its a defective phone, aka hard reset which you have not taken yet.

We should probably try that first.

Ollie, do a factory reset.

His internet is really poor at where he is right now, so I'll be giving updates until he returns.

The heat killed his battery life. He remarked that he'd be lucky if it lasted over 18 hours.

He was able to get 2 days previously.

He's pretty much confirmed that he'll be getting a replacement, but he's currently debating on whether to keep the replacement or sell the replacement and get the LG G4 for about £300 new and unlocked.

I've had the m9 since the day it was released on at&t. I haven't had many of the issues other users have reported, however my device does get hot when I'm really working it, ie many browser pages and multiple Apps open. Via the 4636 code, my m9 has reached into the high 40's ℃ many times (over 47℃). I usually take off the Otter box, and leave it alone for a few. It cools right off. Interestingly enough, the overheat warning led's don't usually come on.?.?.?
