HTC One: Microphone Issues

I have the same problem with my HTC One and Android 4.3, HTC Sense 5.5.
I am living in France.
(1) The microphone works fine with the Voice Recorder app and (2) it works fine when the loudspeaker is switched on.
But otherwise no one can hear what I am saying in phone calls.
This is bizarre because (1) and (2) demonstrate that in fact the microphone is functional.
I will take the phone back to the supplier.

Im in New Zealand... Now onto my second HTC one with microphone problems and have just sent it away today! So most likely be on number 3 in a few days... Dissapointing.. Im going back to samsung

I don't blame you. I'm on my 4th One for various reasons. Probably going back to Motorola after contract is up. Never had problems with their phones. HTC really fails in the quality assurance department as far as I'm concerned. Its a great phone... When it works. I shouldn't have to go through hoops to have a functional phone

Re: Microphone Issues

Turning off Voice Privacy cleared up both quality of sound and loudness issues, very pleased. I did wonder why it worked, any explanations
out there?

Re: Microphone Issues

Tried your suggestion and it worked. Wondering why this would fix the problem, any ideas? Thank you

I reverted back to a 5 month old backup I had laying around and the issue persists.
I also wiped the phone and flashed back a stock mod, same issue.

can't believe there isn't more insight into this after all this time! The mic works that we know of (other apps, speaker phone, etc.) so why is the phone App messed up even in different mods and OS versions ?!

Also It is true that if, while on normal phone mode, you speak directly into the bottom mike it works normally!

cover the mic in the upper left corner on the back of the phone with a piece or two of tape. i had the same issue with my one mini and this seem to have cleared it up. quality isnt as good but you can at least talk without speaker.

but can you talk with tape on in speakerphone mode? For me it just switched the problem from one to the other.

Turning off Call Privacy fixed this issue for me also.

I have had the same issue as described here.
You can view the full description of the issue at O2 - Don't buy HTC One M8 - O2 Community - 719679

I tried the solutions mentioned here and elsewhere but the problem continues. Today I sent the phone away to the retailer to have it checked/repaired.

HTC are spending a fortune on advertising but the htc one m8 is failing in it's primary function (to make calls).
I seldom would recommend not buying something since it can often be the case you were unlucky and got a unit that was faulty. However this issue is widely reported and I regret buying this phone.

I just figured it out. I have tested it several times and it works. I have spoken to HTC and AT&T many times about the problem and NO ONE has given me and good answer. I did a lot of reading about the noise reduction technology and discovered that they OVER engineered the phone. The new phones have been designed with 2 microphones. One on the bottom of the phone that is normally spoken into by the speaker. They created a second microphone on the back of the phone to identify background noise. It attempts to distinguish the difference of the speakers clear talk and background noise. It does some mathematical calculation and distinguishes the 2 different feeds and shuts down the noise passed from the back speaker. I figured out the solution and have tested it several times and have proved it for me. When I answer the phone with the the top of the phone near my ear BUT the bottom of the phone away from my mouth. My voice is picked up by the microphone on the back of the phone and it treats my voice as background noise and mutes my voice. BUT when I answer the phone with the bottom close to my mouth my voice is picked up clearly by the main microphone at the bottom of the phone. The phone that dose what it was designed to do and identify's my voice as the speaker and the background microphone does not cancel my voice out. The problem was how I held the phone when I talked.( USER ERROR vs Over engineered). I am amazed that HTC had never figured it out before. They need to post this as the SOLUTION so all the techs who hear this problem from users they can teach the users how to speak into the phone based on the new technology they built into the phone.... Problem Solved

Yes I figured the issue was due to the problem with the 2 microphones. But what then if you to make or answer a call and people around you are talking? The problem will be there again unless you tell everyone to be quiet!
Is there anyway to disable the microphone on the back other than putting tape over it.
HTC need to get a fix in place for this asap. There are lots of glowing reviews for this phone but it clearly has major problems.

Same issue here, can only use my phone with a bluetooth headset. Rang them & they said I have to return it, is there any point???????

I suspect when they get it back they will:
1] Do a factory reset
2] Do a test and see the microphone is working
3] Send it back to you.

I was told informally that my carrier will give a new phone if they have tried 3 times to fix it.
I wish HTC would just come out with a software upgrade.
They need to add code to say if on a call and not on speaker then use bottom microphone only.

Yes I was having this issue and since this is my second m8 and it was working great I didn't want to return another. I blew my bottom speaker grill and that seems to have solved the problem, I guess dust and stuff was hindering the Mic. Hope this helps.

Try blowing out the bottom speaker grill, I was having the same problem and so I tried this and I guess the small Mic had dust and stuff in it and it is located in the bottom speaker grill, good luck.
