HTC One: Microphone Issues

Ok blowing out the speaker grille didn't fix issue for long, did a factory reset and the Mic seems to be working, but I am noting the problem with verizon, I talked to a rep the other day and she said that she would send a new phone from their warehouse saying that the store may have had a bad batch. If the problem persists I will tell them to get me one from the warehouse but for now the reset worked.

Re: Microphone Issues

Clean your hole , mine must have been clogged , but I went one step further. I scraped the plastic completely off the front mic and now its clear again. Now callers can hear me.

I fixed this issue by removing the SIM card and blowing in the hole... Like an old Nintendo game... (I suggest using compressed air lol... Mouth breathers like us shouldn't blow in our electronics)

Anyway this worked.... I did this... Called my husband who initially heard static.... I blew in the bottom Mic hole hard...

Now works perfectly!!!!!

Mine broke... Because I thought it to be a good idea to record Niagara falls (from the bottom) yeah not smart.... Hopefully this fix is permanent.

Hi everyone,

I am having issues with my new HTC One. Specifically, people seem to have a hard time hearing me in calls. They say my voice is very muffled. This problem is independent of location or signal. However, when I place the call on speaker, people can hear me crystal clear.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

So I read all the posts and found nothing helpful! After fiddling about with settingswith no joy I decided to press the volume up button and the power button simultaneously for a few seconds and a message popped up saying to keep pressing the buttons, then the phone rebooted and wooooohooooo it bloody worked! Hope it works for you too? Oh I rebooted the phone again just to be sure! Good luck e1

Almost certain it's an issue with the SIM tray - mine wasn't sitting flush and after ensuring it was pressed in correctly, the issue seemed to be resolved. Hope this helps.

This fix worked for me. I dropped the phone and it would only work on speaker phone, the normal phones mic made noise like water Cushing. Tried the brush bristles trick whilst on a call to my self on another phone and it cleared for a second or two a couple of times then reverted back to noise. So I decided to suck on the mic hole whilst leaving a small gap between the phone and my mouth to let some air in. I felt something small fly in to my mouth (small bit of dust I guess) and hey presto its all good again.
So if it is a dust problem you need to get it out..:D

I had the same problem, and it happened all of the sudden without any apparent changes that I'd made. I could use speakerphone, but the microphone didn't work when I tried to use the phone normally. I also used the HTC diagnostic, and it showed that the mic was not working. Then I plugged in the earbuds, and suddenly the mic started working again, even once I unplugged the earbuds. I can't explain why, but for now the phone seems to be working normally. Even the diagnostics show that it is working fine. Strange!
I hope this works for you, too.

Hi all
I have the HTC One M7 and had this problem also, but mine did noy even want to work after switching to speaker phone. The other person still could not hear me. If I inserted the headphones it still did not work. So I had to drop the call. Then redailling the no it still did not work, the mic was still off. Should I use the Voice recording app the mic worked, but making/receiving a call it did not. I reboot and made/receive a call then it worked until a noice was made or the phone lifted from my cheeck then its again was not working. Then again reboot to make a call for it to happed only again. :(
This just happend today for the first time.
RESOLOTION:
What I did, went into the hard reset menu (Power off the phone, then press and hold vol down and then press and hold Power until the 3 androids appear.) I then chose recovery and let that run. It booted up after about 5-10min and it is fine. :)

Thanx

Hi,

I had similar problem with my HTC One (M7) AT&T and quickly installed Google Play Edition and then CyanogenMod on that and started having the exact same problem. Audio recordings were fine so I searched on the internet and read about the microphone issue. I hoped that this would be fixed in newer CM builds, but never did. Eventually I got rid of Cyanogenmod and went back to the stock Jelly Bean RUU. I got three OTA upgrades from AT&T and now I am running Sense 6 on top of Android 4.4 and based on feedback on the recent phone calls I made, it has been crystal clear. No issues at all, even in poor network.

I believe the noise cancellation feature of HTC One is not properly supported in Cyanogen Mod which causes this issue. Give it a try, hope this will work for you.

I had this problem come up yesterday and I think I fixed it today. I connected my Bluetooth then made a call. After dialing my phone gives me the option of using the Bluetooth, HTC phone or speaker. I chose the phone and knock on wood, so far no more problems. Hope this works for some of you too.

I just figured it out. I have tested it several times and it works. I have spoken to HTC and AT&T many times about the problem and NO ONE has given me and good answer. I did a lot of reading about the noise reduction technology and discovered that they OVER engineered the phone. The new phones have been designed with 2 microphones. One on the bottom of the phone that is normally spoken into by the speaker. They created a second microphone on the back of the phone to identify background noise. It attempts to distinguish the difference of the speakers clear talk and background noise. It does some mathematical calculation and distinguishes the 2 different feeds and shuts down the noise passed from the back speaker. I figured out the solution and have tested it several times and have proved it for me. When I answer the phone with the the top of the phone near my ear BUT the bottom of the phone away from my mouth. My voice is picked up by the microphone on the back of the phone and it treats my voice as background noise and mutes my voice. BUT when I answer the phone with the bottom close to my mouth my voice is picked up clearly by the main microphone at the bottom of the phone. The phone that dose what it was designed to do and identify's my voice as the speaker and the background microphone does not cancel my voice out. The problem was how I held the phone when I talked.( USER ERROR vs Over engineered). I am amazed that HTC had never figured it out before. They need to post this as the SOLUTION so all the techs who hear this problem from users they can teach the users how to speak into the phone based on the new technology they built into the phone.... Problem Solved

Stanley, very interesting theory. Makes sense to me :)

I have microphone problem with my M8. I just put some duct tape at the back microphome.

I tried plugging in a headset from another brand (my merkury headphones) and turning on the voice recorder. I called my house phone and I my microphone worked!!! It's been months of trying different things and researching and this simple fix worked!
Thanks so much Redsoxx15!!!

Redsoxx15, thank you from Russia. Have already fixed cracling mic1 on HTC One mini2 by plagin my Sony phone speakers.
Will pass this clue to our forums.

Found this youtube video " HTC ONE HIDDEN MENU SOUND TEST | Yassar King"
and it worked for me on HTC one mini 2.
Call *#*#3424#*#*
and run audio test.

Re: Microphone Issues

I have had similar issues. I can be talking with someone and in the middle of the conversation they can't hear me. Sometimes when I switch to speakerphone they are able to hear me, but this doesn't always work. I had an HTC One Evo and upgraded to an HTC One M8. The issue continues. Sprint is my carrier and I use an Airave at my home. I haven't had the issue when I'm not on the Airave with the M8, however I did experience the issue on my HTC Evo outside of the Airave. One thing that I noticed today when it failed is the screen displayed "attempting HD" which I presume is HD audio. The next thing I'm going to try is to have Sprint replace the Airave. I had read on some threads that others have experienced the same symptoms with the Airave with other mfg's of phones.

So I ran the audio test and got extremely bad noise, crackling and inaudible sound on the first test and a bad start but then ok on the second test.

So now that I've diagnosed... what do I do to solve the problem?

Hi,

I have similar problems with my HTC One. When phoning with the phone app, people on the other end can hardly hear me as I sound far away and sound is interrupted. These problems do not occur when I put the call on speaker, connect headphones or use my Bluetooth speaker-phone. It also doesn't occur when I use the built-in microphone with a voice-recorder app. I've had my HTC One for about one and half years now, but these problems only started about half a year ago, without any apparent cause.

However, I have just now found a work-around/solution to the problem: I have put a piece of cellophane tape over the microphone on the back of the device. I found this works by experimenting with recording new voicemail greetings over the phone. I found that it doesn't matter if the tape is there or not when I start the phone conversation, if it's there, sound is OK, if it's not, sound is bad.

Hope this helps some of you.

Daan

Thanks! Nicely done. Tape on the back does the trick. No one could hear me unless I used speaker phone or headset on my m7 after updating to Lollipop on Sprint.
That solution beats mucking about with hard resets etc until an update or patch arrives.
