Found a Solution that works for root users. Just go to recovery and wipe cache and Dalvik. Worked for me.

I found this to be a problem with mini-USB charging port. Solution is to just move your charging pin a little up

Switch your phone off
Take a thin screwdriver (or any other tool) and move the small pin inside your charging port on your HTC slight down
Make sure your phone is charging (when your phone is off) or readjust the pin
Then turn on your phone.

I could upgrade the system to Android 4.3 and sense 5.5 but nothing happens.

Mine started doing that today after I upgraded to 4.4 and sense 5.5. I recharged this morning, and now it's acting really weird. I bought mine in the US, and since I'm also from Brazil, I'm sensing to be proper f...

EDIT: Now, I have made a hard reset everything went back to normal. BUT, the phone doesn't charge. I'm very worried, I'll have to find a way to get the phone to US, in the worst case scenario.

I had same problem, not charging, random car mode, orientation switch, speaker phone on and off, usb host cable plugged in notification. I tried most of the methods mentioned in this thread, safe mode, cleaning (DRY toothbrush), turn on and off fastboot, hard and soft reboots, htc dialer code for testing phone. none of it worked.

took it into sprint and they found a very small amount of corrosion on the contacts of the usb port and that was enough to void my warranty and want to cost me 150 to replace. Did not even check the water sensors on the inside.

I was just now fiddling with the usb cable and phone wiggling it and putting pressure on different spots so the contacts would scrape the connectors in the phone and it just started working, Not sure if this is a permanent fix but it reinforces the notion that this is a dirty connector problem. The only thing i was doing was messing with the cable for 5 min and it started working.

Just rebooted to test if it was permanent but to my dismay it was charging, messed with the cable a few times and got it working again.

Remember to clean all your ports before going to see sprint even if you don't think that is the problem, Now i have a void warranty with a working phone(for now). I will try and go get the warranty reinstated but the shop around my area is not know for being generous.

Mine stopped charging/connecting to pc after a software update a couple of weeks ago, but it would still charge a bit when the phone was turned off. Same as others the factory reset didn't do anything, and sent it off for repair but they want to charge ?200 to fix it because there was a slight crack on the screen, which happened 6 months ago, hasn't affected the phone and is completely unrelated to the current issue, but they claim it will fall apart if they open the phone :/

Just got my HTC One Max yesterday. Started having problems with it the next morning. It was giving an error message about a USB mode and randomly going into car mode, then the phone would ring for no reason. Phone wouldn't charge either. Here is how I solved the problem. HTC has a service that imports all of your information from your previous android phone. It will download apps from your previous phone basically using your Google account. HTC ended up downloading the push service for my old phone. After I removed the push service the problems went away. I would do a factory reset, then choose what apps you want to download from your previous account.

Boot into recovery
Clear cache and Dalvik cache

I had received the "USB host connected / unable to charge" message but NOT experienced any car mode or landscape issues.

I noticed in battery stats it shows the phone only charged to 70% overnight (not true, unplugged at 100% this morning).
It also showed no charging activity for the whole day (again, not true)
And finally, phone was unplugged and on battery for 10.5 hours but battery counter was frozen at 7 hours 35 minutes, beginning at 70%.

As I said, cache wipe fixed all.

Non rooted users are out of luck I'm afraid, unless you live near one of your mobile service provider's repair centers. You can walk in, explain your problem, and THEY can perform a cache wipe there. Usually in under fifteen minutes and for no cost.
Just be sure to tell them you want the cache wipe.

no letting it die all the way doesn't do anything to phone. not good for overall battery life in long run. I try to keep mine between 30 and 90%

GUYS GREAT NEWS....THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH THE PHONE BUT SIMPLY WITH THE USB CABLE. JUST REPLACE IT AND THE PHONE WILL WORK COMPLETELY WELL.

O meu HTC ONE so carrega desligado e n?o entra em modo USB.
E enquanto desligado, o LED Vermelho, pisca estranho. Pisco vermelho mais forte por 5 segundos, na sequencia um vermelho mais fraco, depois apaga, e repete o processo.

Se conseguiu resolver avisa ai.

My HTC one so Loads Off, Location: Not USB mode.
And while Off the Red LED blinks weird. Red Robin MORE IN 5 SECONDS Forte, na hum sequel Red More weak, then off, and repeats the process.

HTC one m7, 6 months of use

Im From Brazil, in Brazil there is not servicing of HTC.

Anyone got the solution?

Now my hTC one is with some problem at the wifi. I just can't switch on the wi-fi antenna. After some restarts, occasionally, I can use wireless services.
Still with usb problems.

I'm really happy now. After 1 week worked.

I hold the POWER, VOL DOWN, and placed opposite the light from the PC monitor to 2 sensors HTC ONE.
15 Seconds.

Light point to the sensors of the HTC, hold VOL DOWN and POWER for 15 seconds.

Unfortunately I've also encountered the same issues regarding HTC one not charging blinking red light every 5 seconds which in my line of work indicating an error code ,I've replaced the battery ,usb port including the flex cable internally. Flashed recovery TWRP S- OFF ROOTED SAME PROBLEM.Flashed kernel same issue ,also the phone isn't recognized by pc therefore no mass storage .The only way to charge the phone is in hboot mode after entering fast boot then it says fast boot ac .There must be a script that's disabled the usb charging port from charging and for pc to recognize it .Does anyone know how enable the charger port to charge

I had the same "in USB host mode, can not charge" problem when the power is on, after 3 months of use of my new HTC One. It may be related to the charger but I am not 100% sure. It was very annoying and I had to turn the phone off before plugging in the power cable to charge. It happened when I was in Taiwan, so, I called the HTC help line there and they gave me a solution.
The guy on the other end asked me to go to Power setting and click off the "Fast Boot" and "Power Saver Mode" options first. ( I am not sure if these steps are necessary, but, anyway I did as he requested.) Then, power off the phone by pushing down "Power Off" for 2-3 seconds to allow restarting in Safe Mode. Once the phone restarts in Safe Mode, some of the Apps may not work but the phone can be charged normally. After restarting my phone in it's normal mode, the "USB Host Mode, Can't Charge phone" problem was gone. I can charge your phone normally and also click back on the "Power Saver Mode" and "Fast Boot" options in Power Setting, without problems. I hope this will also work for your phone.
The "Car Mode" is another annoying problem popped out from time to time after fixing the charging problem. The Car Mode pops up randomly and frequently on my phone for several days. It interrupts my phone operation and drains battery fast. Restarting in Safe Mode helps this problem only temporarily. (I think it may be also related to the USB chargers because I was using different chargers of different currents while away from the U.S.) Anyhow, this problem finally disappears after I returned to the U.S. 2 weeks ago and I am using a HTC phone charger now.

Mine was doing the same thing 'USB HOST MODE' i did reboot it without success.

Took my phone and changer down to the phone store they tired charging it.The charger got hot
and didn't charge, then they tired a different charger..... works perfect now ! .

HTC chargers No Good.. Suggest try a new charger in the store before re booting or anything like that ..

p.s. only had mine for a month before this problem occurred
