HTC one "System date"

For several months my phone has indicated that "System update is available". I tap to download(Takes 2 hours!), then after six attempts it has been unsuccessful! I have shut it off overnight and tried again- same response. Is this essential for the smooth operation of my device? Can anyone help? Telus sent me your way Thanks. Beechum
