HTC unlocking bootloaders for all phones made after sep 2011

Just thought i'd throw this out there since i was browsing phonedog and android central. Looks like s-off isn't too far away!

"Got a newer HTC-made Android device whose bootloader you'd like to unlock? We've got some good news for you today, as HTC has announced on its HTCDev website that all of its Android products released after September 2011 are now unlockable. Not all devices will show up on HTC's unlock list right away, but the company says that its site will be updated to reflect the changes in the coming weeks. As for any pre-September products? HTC says that it's still working on those models, but didn't provide any details on when new devices will be added. The full statement from the folks at HTC:

"All HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 are unlockable. The website will be updated accordingly to reflect this in the coming weeks. We continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices."

Some folks will be more excited about this news than others, but for those that like to tinker with their handsets, this is pretty awesome stuff. Kudos to HTC for keeping its word. What verizon wouldn't allow would be ALL HTC devices shipping unlocked.

I'm new at this unlocking bootloader stuff, but I did it. It was a little confusing for a first timer, but looking back on it it wasn't too bad. However I didn't realize that I would have to resetup the device. But its done now, so I'm happy

I'd say it would work the same as rooting it yourself. You would lose your manufacturer warranty but not carrier insurance. Which, if you ask me, can far more valuable than a warranty...because warranty ends but insurance doesn't.

The text on their page seems to imply that the warranty is only voided for issues that have to do with unlocking the bootloader. So (for example) a display that goes out or an audio jack that goes out would probably be covered under warranty still.

I called Verizon. According to them, your warranty is completely void if you do this.

But insurance is unaffected. With insurance you will have a deductible (mine is $100) and you will be limited to 2 claims a year. But insurance never expires (well, so long as you keep making the $7 payment) and they dont care if you unlock the bootloader.

This is a HTC device, the warranty is through HTC. Verizon chooses to assist, but are not legally required to do so, but that also means that they cannot void the warranty, though, they can refuse to warranty the phone. Two completely different things. Of course, If Verizon chooses not to warranty your phone, then you would have to go directly to HTC to have the phone warrantied.

HTC is the manufacturer, there is a manufacturer warranty on almost every device out there. Should be detailed in the manual that came with the phone

Of course, you have to pay up front though. And you are committing to the full term. With Asurion, it is in installments, and I can quit any time.

You can quit anytime, but you can't start asurion unless you are within 30 days of purchase or during open enrollment.

Squaretrade has the same requirement. But from what I saw you cant "quit" any time, because you pay for it up front. There is no monthly charge. You buy the service all at once.

I decided to keep it on my account. I can always quit later if I dont want it. And $7 a month isnt that bad.
