Huawei Ascend Mate 2 Upgrade

I have a Huawei Ascend Mate 2 with Android 4.3. I love this phone, it's superb camera and great battery life, so I'd like to keep it as long as possible. I'm wondering if there is a way to upgrade to a more recent Android version. As far as I can tell, the company is not offering an update. If I go to "System update" I have two choices, 1) Online update and 2) Local update. For online update, no updates are found. I'm not sure what the local update will do. Can someone please advise?

Welcome to Android Central! Local Update is probably a way to manually load a system update file provided by Huawei. You might also be able to load a custom ROM that way--look in the forums over at xda-developers.com to see if anyone has developed a custom ROM for this phone.

There is a 5.1 update. It was a little complicated to do, but I got it updated.
