Huge opportunity for LG

Here we go again.... Better device for who? You can't speak for everyone...you don't get to decide for everyone... You just don't . Most people don't want an S pen just like most people dont want the LG features you claim nobody wants. When the Note 7 met a premature death, many jumped to another phone besides Samsung and many are happy. Some will go back of course... Its inevitable, but some are waiting for the V30 as well as the Pixel 2 as well as the iPhone 8 and a few others not worth mentioning. If someone is stuck on the Spen then they have no options, but those that aren't have many alternatives.
I fully agree. First let me say I am a big Note fan. I have been using a Note 4 for the last 2.5 years. I have 2 different Note tablets. I use my SPen a lot with OneNote. I have preordered the Note 8. I did it because I use the SPen a lot.

I am always surprised by people who buy Notes but never use the Pen. I was really tempted by the V20, but decided to stay with the Note, I did not want to be dependent on always having a tablet with me to take notes in meetings.

If I did not care about an SPen the V30 or S8+ would be my top choice. I would definitely want to see the V30 before deciding. I am betting the V30 will be an awesome media phone.

I hope the V30 is a big success. LG needs a big success to provide competition to Samsung.

How many people really use the S Pen after a month? The S Pen makes it a better device for people who enjoy writing/drawing. For everyone else its fair game.
I use mine all the time. The handwriting recognition is fantastic. I take notes in meetings with OneNote and my notes are automatically synced to my laptop. I can then easily turn the notes to tasks and assign them to my team.

That said I agree with you I guess less than 50% of Note owners even touch the SPen.

The Note8 will still be a better device than the V30 and it still has the S Pen that the V30 doesn't. The V30 is competing with the S8+, not the Note8.

I dunno. I have had The Note 1, Note 2, S4, S5, S6, and I am using the S7 now. I took a break with the G4 (and it bootlooped lol). I was going to get the Note 7, but never even got the chance.

I use the fingerprint scanner many times a day and that horrible placement on the S8 series might make me move away this generation of Samsung. The curved screens not a plus for me either, but the V30 might go the same route. I really like amoled, and this is something that LG has addressed for me.

I did use the S pen when I had it maybe once a week or two.

I'm curious...maybe I'm missing something, but what makes the Note 8 a better device than the V30? Ergonomics can't be dismissed, and the ergonomics of the Note 8 fingerprint scanner have been panned by most reviewers.

Unless you want a stylus, I am curious why you have the Note8 beating the V30 for people who want a big screen, good camera, and is easy to use ergonomically?

And I totally understand your use cases for the Note which makes perfect sense. I saw a maintenance guy take a picture at work and then write down the measurements that he needed for a project with the pen and I was very impressed to witness a real world use for it in an unexpected place. For some people the pen functionality just fits with their career/lifestyle.

People may seem underwhelmed by the Note8, but an underwhelming Note8 is still going to be one of the best phones of the year. And if it's anything like the Note 7 was, once Note fans actually get time with the phone, it's over (without explosions this time).

The V30 however, looks like a beast in it's own right
Oh I know it will still most likely outsell the V30 because of LG's reputation and fight for relevance but I just feel like the time is right for the V30. It appears to be more of a better phone without all the extra added features as opposed to previous flagships where theywl were great mainly becsuse of the extra added features and not so much the phone themselves.

So you'll just end up with a Samsung in the end anyway?
Yep probably but I won't own it. I'll use it and upgrade when I choose. The V20 will be here to stay no matter what comes even if it just ends up being a paperweight 5 years from now. Same with the Lumia 1020 I still have. This is assuming Samsung doesn't make a device that has the same affect the V20 has had on me.

Better device as in, the Note8 will be better in virtually every category.

This discussion seems to happen every time a new LG comes out. HUGE opportunity! And everytime it's the same results. G4 had the camera. G5 had the swappable parts. V10 had removeable batteries. V20 had battery and quad dac.

This time around sales wont be any different. LG isnt going to take over the market or win 50% new buyers. There seems to be a consistent niche market for LG products with loyal buyers... Myself included... But this is never going to turn into some huge Apple type release

The G4 really did well and could have been a real foothold for LG. I agree, the V30 is not going to roll over the competition but folks want phones with big screens that are stylish. If LG can put a good phone that looks great and feels premium in the hands of salespeople in stores then the V30 can be a hit.

Its not going to beat any Samsung high end model. I think it will do better than the past few LG models.

Honestly, I think it will do exactly the same as the past models. It seems to be a consistent pattern. Each new LG release had some gimmick to gain market share....be it camera, sound, batteries, swappable parts, and as already proven....the sales remained stagnant or even dropped. I dont see anything different this time around in the marketing, gimmicks, additions, etc. I just dont.

Even the marketing remains the same. Flashy pre-release commercials showing little to nothing about the device, and for those who do their homework, I think already have their minds made up regarding purchase. The only real new audience I could possibly see on this phone would be hardcore audiophiles, but even that is a huge stretch.

Well only time will tell.

Yeah..... OK

It's the truth. You don't have to accept it. Samsung will have numerous Best Smartphone nods and awards this year and LG won't. There is no reason to think this year will be any different. The Note 8 will be a big seller and the V30 won't.
