In ES File Explorer, hit Menu-Settings and enable Root Explorer and Mount File System.

Be careful now that ES can mess up your phone's system partition!

flash_image hates me...
I got it moved to system bin, but when I use the terminal emulator to do the recovery, it says flash_image permission denied.

Sorry I'm such a whiny helpless new guy!

Using your file explorer, long press on the flash_image binary and select permissions, then check all 9 boxes. You want rwxrwxrwx for permissions.

Ok - so watch - i can even talk the talk now!! any way - if I want to flash the latest rom, that one zip is all I need right? Then before I do it I should Titanium back up, recovery back up or not? wipes, formats or do I just use the new rom zip?

When i update the rom I normaly just format boot, system, cache and dalvic, then flash the rom and gapps that way you will keep all your apps and settings. But you can only do this when flashing the same family firmwares like 2.3 to 2.3 that you would do for an update but you would need to wipe everything when going from 2.2 to 2.3 otherwise it would just get stuck at boot.
