I am old but I want 2.3

OK, rather than answer all that, here's a quick walk through that will put CyanogenMod7.1 on your phone.

A) Prepare
  1. Download necessary files
  2. Backup everything
    • Backup your sdcard to your computer or a drop-box type account
    • Install Titanium Backup, backup all apps+data, but not system apps
    • Backup your contacts etc to your gmail account
  3. Prepare phone
    • Install Gingerbreak from the Market, but don't open it yet
    • Install Terminal Emulator from the Market
    • Be sure settings>>applications>>Unknown_sources is checked
    • Move all downloaded files to the root or top level of your sdcard

B) Root your phone - Warning - This is the point your void your warranty, no turning back
  1. Run the Gingerbreak app, and follow it's directions
  2. Install SuperUser from the Market, and go ahead and run it now
  3. Install Root Explorer or ES File Explorer from the Market, no need to open it yet
  4. Your phone should now be rooted, allowing you to do whatever you want with it

C) Install a custom recovery, which is a mini operating system that lets you backup/update your phone
  1. Install flash_image binary (you should have downloaded it to your sdcard in step A-1 above)
    • Open your root capable file explorer, and copy the flash_image file from your sdcard to /system/bin
    • Long press on it after you copy it, and set it's permissions (check all checkboxes)
  2. Use flash_image in terminal emulator to install a custom recovery
    • Open Terminal Emulator
    • Type in su (hit enter, this should change the prompt from a $ to a #)
    • Type in flash_image recovery /sdcard/NAME_OF_RECOVERY.img (hit enter)
    • After about 30 seconds, you should have your custom recovery installed
  3. Reboot into recovery
    • Type in reboot recovery (hit enter)
    • Your phone will now reboot into your custom recovery

D) Once you are booted into recovvery, you can make a backup, and install a custom ROM and gapps
  1. Select backup and restore, then backup. This creates a complete backup of your phone, handy if you have problems. ;)
  2. Wipe cache partition
  3. Under advanced, wipe Dalvik Cache
  4. Under mounts and storage, format boot, system, data, and cache
  5. Under install zip from sdcard (not update.zip !!!) select choose zip from sdcard (again, not update.zip !!!)
  6. Select the ROM zip file you downloaded in step A-1 to your sdcard
  7. Select choose zip from sdcard again, and this time select the gapps zip file you downloaded in step A-1
  8. Press the back key to get back to the main menu, the select reboot system now
  9. It will take longer than normal to boot up, once it does you will be running your new custom ROM

E) Restore your apps
  1. Run Titanium Backup
  2. Restore all user apps + data
  3. DO NOT RESTORE SYSTEM APPS OR SYSTEM DATA !!!

If you have problems at any point after making your backup in recovery, you can reboot into recovery by turning off your phone, then holding down the home_key+volume_down+power till the LG logo disappears. Once in recovery, restore your backup (located in the clockworkmod/backup folder), and your phone will be back to the same state it was in before you flashed the custom ROM. ;)

If you have a problem with Gingerbreak from the Market, PM me with your email address and I will send you a copy of a Gingerbreak app that did work for me. I am not sure the one on the Market will work. It didn't work for me when I tried to root my son's phone. He has 2.2.2 and I followed the same instructions posted by JerryScript with success :p except the Market version of Gingerbreak didn't work for me.

I couldn't find any gingerbreak on the market. So I downloaded gingerbreak1.2.apk from xda I think. I put it on my sd card and then I guess you click it with a file manager? Not real sure how to install it.

You are smarter than you realize, that's exactly right. ;)

AndyOpie pointed out to me that I forgot to mention busybox. If you have problems, I'll amend the instructions to include info about it.

Sounds like progress, Dave. Well done :-)

I didn't find gingerbreak on Market either. I don't think it's there. Like you I downloaded it on the PC and copied to the sdcard.

Jerry: That's an amazing guide you posted. I wish I'd seen that a week ago before I did my OV.

Jerry you should stickie that post as an updated guide. Those steps are perfect for doing everything from your cell. I wish I had a guide like that back in may when I first found out about cyanogen for the v.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to do it today as soon as I read a little about busybox and adb. I am amazed and encouraged by how much time you are willing to give a stranger.

OK - so when I use my es or astro I just click on the .apk file and then it installs the app I guess?

I don't think I'll need any adb stuff since I'm not using my PC at all right?

Then I read somewhere that if I use my Titanium BU and click "problems" it will automatically give me busybox.

This is fun!

I didn't even realize I had written that up without any mention of adb. ;)

Jerry, if you DO make this guide a sticky, I'd make two little changes first:

1) Move TB backup to after gingerbreak. I believe TB needs root to even run.

2) Download link to gingerbreak. I don't think it's in Market.

Otherwise it's perfect (from what I can see).

Thanks :-)

I can't get flash_image to copy from sdcard to system/bin. Tried astro and es. says it can't copy

I did get root (I think!). Anyway - if someone can give me some things to try to get flash_image into /system/bin - I'd appreciate it. flash_image doesn't have a file extension - is that normal? Maybe some setting needs changed on my phone to allow files to be copied to it?

Find root checker in the market. It checks for root and busybox

ya baby - root confirmed via root checker app! Maybe I'll try getting the flash_image thingy over to my system bin by typing some stuff into terminal emulator?
