I discovered how to use BEATS EQ enhancement on other apps...

Hey all,

I didn't see this posted, but if you play a song through the stock Rezound player and have BEATS enabled, you can then PAUSE the track, and any music you play in any other player at that time will take advantage of the BEATS enhancement (I'm currently using PlayerPro).

The enabled and disabled toggle will dissapear from the notification bar as soon as you switch apps, but, as you'll hear, it's still in full effect!

Just wanted to share as I know this has been asked.

I hope with the next update they allow beats to be used with other apps.

I have 17k songs on Google Music. I don't have any songs saved to the phone itself.

I don't even know how Beats sounds. lol

I haven't even pulled the trigger on an upgrade yet, but this plays in favor of the Rezound. I've been annoyed that Beats only works on local music files.

Has HTC publicly stated that an update will allow 3rd party apps to use Beats?

HTC made an announcement back in October that they'd be opening up some Beats APIs, so whenever that happens we should see integration into 3rd party apps by the respective developers. No word on timeframe, however.

That should be interesting. It would be great if they made it available for Google music. I liked the way the beats sounded when I had the rezound.

Why do so many refer to Beats as an equalizer? My understanding was there was an on-board chip, a DSP of some sort, probably along with some equalization. Not a big deal, but calling it just an equalizer seems to undersell it somewhat.

I'll also confirm the trick does not seem to work. I started up a silent track on the stock music player and then flipped over to Google Music hoping to run both concurrently but it doesn't work (the stock player stops).

When I think about the Android programming model and the fact that there are actual Beats APIs that need to be called (as opposed to a global flag/setting), it would make sense that each sandboxed application would need to create its own instance/object of Beats (assuming it's not a static class, which it doesn't appear to be).

Hey all,

Ok, I just re-tested this so as not to give out false hope. It turns out that what I stated isn't the case. What IS the case (and why I was confused) is that PlayerPro (without any enhancement, no active DSP, and no equalizer turned on) sounds the same if not better than the stock app WITH Beats enabled. I was shocked. I just assumed that the awesome sound coming from PlayerPro was because I accidentally started the stock app with Beatsat the same time.


So, I am totally impressed with Player Pro. Anyone else have it and can attest to this?

Something that I feel that people are going to constantly forget is that audio quality isn't just determined by an equalizer or player. A player can only do so much with a low quality mp3 file. This is actually one of my concerns about Google Music, as it streams what is the data rate at which it streams? For me I have all of my mp3s stored as "lossless" 320kbps format.

I've always thought this as well.... One of the main problems with *most* streaming sources.

I haven't tried it but someone told me about the Google Music Importer App.

It is supposed to take the music you have downloaded for offline use and save it on the phone in a way that Android can see it, and keep the ID3 tags.

Should allow you to play the music with the stock music app and be able to use beats. Ideally I want beats to work in the Google Music App. But I might give this workaround a try.

I have read, although I don't have a link for you, that GM streams at 320kbps. I bought and streamed some Xmas music from GM this past holiday, including some vintage King's College Choir of Cambridge recordings. Ignoring the source noise from the original master tapes (from the 50's and 60's) the tonal quality and imaging was FANTASTIC. I've been very pleased with the rest of my music from GM as well. I had similar doubts as you did re. streaming, but consider me a fan, certainly of GM. Caveat - my pre-pro is an Anthem D2, which upsamples all non-direct analog audio input, so this certainly helps the ultimate sound quality.
