I dropped my phone and it got damaged.

I've dropped my phone a couple times. It barely left a scuff on the top right corner. I made sure to carefully inspect it after each time. Last night when swapping cases I noticed the metal between the volume rocker and screen was bending outwards. Which to me is odd since if it was from an impact it would have been bent inward you'd think. And I know for sure it happened a few days at least AFTER any impact. Everything is still functional. I called Fi since I financed thru them and they're going to send me a replacement. The whole process was really easy. Definitely not a bend gate situation i don't think, but not sure if anyone has noticed it happening to them. It's an extremely thin piece of metal in the weakest area of the phone. Not sure if I could have accidentally sat down with it in my back pocket on accident or what.

Can you post a photo of the damage so we can be aware of what to look for? Many keep their phones in a case and it might be harder to see with a case on.

Thanks.

Metal can fatigue. You said you dropped it, and from the sounds of it, you dropped it on the top right corner, above where you saw the bend. That impact could have easily stressed out the frame... Aluminum might be light and strong, but it doesn't have much give, like some kinds of steels would. Those impacts could have caused microfissures that weakened that spot.

As for bending outward rather than inward. What is there to stop the frame from bending in? The phone's internals. but there's nothing there to keep it from bowing outwards. Combine stress damage from multiple drops, it isn't going hold up nearly as well.

It was on the bottom left edge and its more of a scuff on the edge. It fell 2 and a half maybe 3 feet. And I know as of 3 days after it was fine. You'd think if an impact caused it, it would have bent right away.

I'm not clear on why Fi is replacing this. Is this through their $5 per month new device protection and $99 deductible or are they not aware of the drops?

Nope.... Metals, especially Aluminum, can be damaged without you seeing even the slightest bit of damage. It's a sneaky metal.... it's properties are a blessing and a curse. They use it in aircraft, but metal fatigue is a constant worry in those airframes.

The thin metal edge is level with the screen. I think people are catching it with their fingernails when removing cases and bending. It would have been better design if the screen were slightly raised so the edge wouldn't get caught like this. The takeaway is to be very careful in removing cases so as to not stress the edge where the case meets the glass. There are several instances of this exact problem in the forum. Most right around the volume button.

that might happen, but I don't see that as the case here. If that was to happen, you would expect it to bow outward. That kink is from compression along the axis of the frame.

When I talked to Google on the phone about a replacement he asked if there was any other damage to the phone. I told him I had dropped it a couple times but it wasn't damaged minus a couple scratches. I also told him that the drops happened a couple weeks before i first noticed the "bending". He said that it sounded like a defect since it shouldn't bend out like that. It has since been returned and the replacement hasn't had any issues.

I did think about it possibly could have happened from a case. I used the Versus case for awhile at first and it has a REALLY tight fit. I've not used it on the replacement. I got the Speck case, which also has a tight fit, but haven't noticed any issues.

I've since done a little research and it seems like quite a few people have had the same thing happen to them. Some had dropped, some hadn't. But they all had bending in the same spot.

I do think the changing of the post title to " I dropped my phone and it broke" is as misleading as my original post was unclear about exactly what happened.
