I got an Android, but want to go back to the iPhone. Why is this?

It is a different way, and maybe that is why the iPhone has been the #1 selling smartphone every year since it's introduction, and shows no signs of losing that distinction.
Sure it does...Samsung has been gaining ground on Apple for years. Apple is not pulling farther ahead.

Samsung Rises To Nearly Double Apple's Smartphone Sales

Market research firm IDC estimated that Samsung shipped 70.7m smartphones during the first quarter, up 61% over a year earlier and capturing 33% market share. Apple, the second-largest smartphone maker, sold 37.4m iPhones. Its market share fell to 17% from 23% a year earlier, IDC said.

There will come a day when a single Android phone eclipses the best iPhone. And probably in the near future. It is going to happen. Better start preparing your excuses now.

S4 is the best selling Android smartphone, and the 5s has nearly doubled S4 sales. I think it is safe.

Why would it matter outside of debates like this? I'm happy to know the S4 sells better than my 5s, you know why? ...because it just doesn't matter, at least not to me. Oh wait....

Because it is an indication the desirability of a given product relative to another.

Obviously you care about debates like this or you would not be participating.

Absolutely, but if feel like the importance of the topic is confined to these discussions. I feel like they aren't really important outside in the real world.

Also, I know and respect that I'm in an Android forum but it sometimes presents a challenge to not respond which this member or that says something like, "iPhone users are braindead...because they use...iPhones." ...an exaggeration for sure, and not one aimed at you at all in any way whatsoever, but there are members that have written things just about as intelligent sounding as that.

You mentioned once wanting to guide those that may come here looking for purchasing advice, which is a noble thing to do. ...but I feel like most that come here already largely have the answers the seek and their preferences, they're just seeking validation / confirmation. I could be wrong but I don't think TOO MANY iPhone users come saying, "I absolutely love my iPhone but I want to get an Android, why should I?" If they did they should know the response they're gonna get is, "Because Android is better and iPhones do so so so so much less." What would they EXPECT to hear in an android forum?

I totally disagree. I have used them myself to make purchasing decisions and to advice friends and family and co-workers before. I have even advised a few of them to buy Apple products, something I would never have done before debates like this. Because there are advantages to Apple I would not have considered on my own.

I love actually having used both actively, so I know first-hand when advising friends and family. For me, it alway starts with, "What is most important to you in a phone?" I work in IT for FDA and folks are always asking me and unless they mention simplicity, video chatting with iphone having friends/family, and apps as priorities I focus on the phone next. There's so many android choices. I am fond of the G2 and would recommend it to anyone seemingly open to the Android experience. I actually don't push iPhones because that's what I prefer and I don't want to appear biased as opposed to considering their stated needs/wants.

I don't think Apple's shareholders will allow that to happen. More likely they will simply settle into a niche, the way the Mac did.

Personally, I think Apple died with Steve Jobs. He was there when it was born, and brought it back from the brink. I'm by no means a fan of Apple products, but all you need to do is watch some of his Keynote speeches, especially when he launched the iPhone, and read even just a little bit to see that he was Apple's heart.

Now look at them.... They were always at the forefront... the iPod, iPhone, etc.... they seemed ahead of everyone. Now? They are playing catch-up.... Their once peerless iPhone looks kind of meh when you put it in a lineup of the current Android flagships (Nexus 5, HTC One, Swhatever and the Notes). Their iPad, which kind of defined the tablet genre, now just look at that latest Samsung Ad circulating. They lost what made them special. They'll still be around and sell a ton of stuff, but their best days are behind them.

I wonder if all the folks at iMore would agree with that.

Source? I provided mine.

That's gonna be tough. I'm not sure Apple ever releases sales numbers for individual models. Take the chart in my link with a grain of salt.

But, it took Samsung 6 months to sell 40 million S4's, and Apple supposedly sold 9.5 million 5s in 3 days.

The official press release doesn't break it down by individual model, though.

Apple numbers are actual sales, while Samesung numbers are shipped units and not actually sold.
The iPhone 5 sold 89,000,000, and the 5s is on pace to eclipse those numbers.

They're actually both different ways of stating the same figure. We thought the same thing until we found out that was incorrect last year. Apple and Samsung are both reporting shipped from Apple and Samsung, not phones in end-user consumer's hands.

I beg to differ, as everything that I have seen confirms "in users' hands".

Samesung has made the money, but consumers don't have them.

You quoted units sold in a slightly vague and off the cuff manor. I provided information that attempted to give some fact to what you stated (in essence supporting your argument).

So, now I'll ask for supporting evidence that Apple reports "in user's hands" instead of just shipped/sold (those are the same thing to a manufacturer, once they get paid and it leaves the warehouse they don't care).

What Apple really means when it says it has “sold” a product ?€” Tech News and Analysis

Apple's sales figures include both direct sales and channel sales, which are devices sold to retail partners, such as Best Buy, Verizon, AT&T, Staples, Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Radio Shack, T-Mobile, Sprint, Cosco, etc, etc, and a myriad of companies outside of the US. The device counts as sold when Apple is disconnected from financial responsibility of the device. In the example in the linked article, 37.5 million phones are reported as sold, however 11.6 million have been "sold" to retailers, not directly to customers and we have no way of knowing how many of those are in consumer hands. Now, of course we can speculate given how fast they sell out, but the fact remains that they're using the exact same method of counting "sold" units, it's just more misleading because they have their own stores to sell direct from.

Additionally, Apple never reports by product model, only by product type: ie, they report iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc and we're left to guess at the distribution, while most companies are reporting by each type of individual product. This makes it very difficult to compare sales of the 5s to the S4 -- because we're comparing 3 or more devices to 1.

Now, when they reported last September that they sold 9 million in 3 days, that was only 5s and 5c models and didn't include older models. So that's better, but still... how do we know how many of each?

Galaxy S3 might already have crossed iPhone 5 cumulative sales I think.

Galaxy S4 will also cross the sales of 5S if Apple stops producing iPhone 5S after iPhone 6 releases.
