I got an Android, but want to go back to the iPhone. Why is this?

Before we get back on topic... Fast food chicken is disgusting.

I am comparing the same markets. It just seems, IMO, that if the best-selling Android (S4) is so much greater than the iPhone that all the extra millions of Android buyers would make it the #1 seller. The guy said on here that he didn't think that the iPhone was the best selling smartphone, so I simply asked if he could show any Android that has sold 89,000,000 units. Instead of just answering "no", it got spun into "Android has so many models, and iOS has one option".

Do you want to know the real and honest answer ?

Android and iOS are targeting different people.

If you compare same platform devices, it would make sense.

If someone comes and asks whether they should buy Mac or Windows machine.

What would you answer ?
It purely depends on platform which directly depends on one's needs and functionality.

What Apple really means when it says it has ?sold? a product — Tech News and Analysis

Apple's sales figures include both direct sales and channel sales, which are devices sold to retail partners, such as Best Buy, Verizon, AT&T, Staples, Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Radio Shack, T-Mobile, Sprint, Cosco, etc, etc, and a myriad of companies outside of the US. The device counts as sold when Apple is disconnected from financial responsibility of the device. In the example in the linked article, 37.5 million phones are reported as sold, however 11.6 million have been "sold" to retailers, not directly to customers and we have no way of knowing how many of those are in consumer hands. Now, of course we can speculate given how fast they sell out, but the fact remains that they're using the exact same method of counting "sold" units, it's just more misleading because they have their own stores to sell direct from.

Additionally, Apple never reports by product model, only by product type: ie, they report iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc and we're left to guess at the distribution, while most companies are reporting by each type of individual product. This makes it very difficult to compare sales of the 5s to the S4 -- because we're comparing 3 or more devices to 1.

Now, when they reported last September that they sold 9 million in 3 days, that was only 5s and 5c models and didn't include older models. So that's better, but still... how do we know how many of each?

Why, oh why does anyone question the Number Master? NIT aka Dark Spock can run number lines around us. I bow to the Number Master.

lol I couldn't tell you without looking what the topic of this thread is. I'm 90% kidding on the chicken comment and if everyone is playing nice I don't really care how the conversation evolves.

You have no idea how close it came to being Lizard Spock...

It is unreasonable to expect that when someone makes a claim in a thread that is clearly wrong that it simply go unchallenged, even if it is not directly related to the original topic. You can't expect to just let people insert random "facts" into a discussion without comment. If you do you are tacitly accepting their claims as fact.

That being said, I am not even sure this is off topic. This topic is clearly iOS vs Android. Read the thread title.

While you may think you have to argue others points that's not really the issue.

The topic is why does he want to go back to iOS versus Android.. Not sale figures of iOS and Android. So they aren't exactly on the same page since he didn't say "also the sales of iPhone versus the S4 make me want to switch as well". :).

Jeff stated, and I understand, that if someone writes something that he truly believes is false, and he lets it go uncontested, then the statement that is believed to be false may indeed be consumed as if factually true. I don't always agree, as I enjoy iOS, but I understand him defending his position. Threads get derailed now and then, we're human, but no lives are lost.

I never said lives were lost... But if people didn't come in and talk off topic.. Such as sale figures.. The topic wouldn't be derailed with bad information that he would need to defend ;).

Well, you have a point, and the moderators do take it seriously. You can always hit the 'Report' button if you think its getting out of hand.
