I hate the Pie update.

So are they going to take away the option to use the nav buttons eventually I wonder? As of now I still have the option to use either.... I'm still using the buttons lol. I was thinking maybe I should turn gestures on and give it a go before I'm forced to :O I think they really should give us the option for either...... isn't Android all about being able to customize it?

I have been using the PIE nav bar, since it's arrival. The switch to last app function is a bit touchy but overall I like it.
I haven't read that Google well do away with the the button navbar.
You do have the option to use either.

Having use to be a big BB10 fan, I really enjoyed using the gestures. Definitely not on par with Blackberry, but it works well. After a few days I've become used to it and prefer it to Oreo.

With that being said, my Pixel 2 XL worked perfectly for 8 months without a single issue before this update. After the Pie update however, performance has definitely taken a hit. Hopefully Google releases some mini update that helps.

Why oh why did Google not buy up BB10 os and run Andriod through it? Apple would be dead in the water.

The struggle is real for me. I'm very disappointed with the update. I have short thumbs that arc up the screen. I'd rather have the swipe left or right to clear apps.

I'm glad you realize the struggle is strictly a personal problem. I don't use gestures and I can't remember "closing" an app so I have absolutely no struggle. I like Android 9, even if I hate calling it pie. Peach Pie would work but Pie is so generic. I recently installed the Pixel 3 camera file in my Pixel2. That's been interesting and I couldn't do it without Android 9.

It is personal, but because of the way they did it with that second swipe up they made it personal. That second swipe up is arguably and in my opinion the worst part. I also hate the Pixel launcher so putting Nova on it at least allows me to get rid of the second swipe and the search bar I don't need and out the gestures on it I like.

The gesture navigation is tolerable with a different launcher but I still don't think it's any better than the buttons but at least I can live with it because honestly it's forcing me to look at other OEM devices that allow me to keep the buttons.

I use Nova launcher because I don't use Google search and hate having to widget on the screen. Nova also gives me more control of size of icons, etc.

I don't hate using Google search, but I do hate the Pixel launcher's mandatory, giant Google search bar that cannot be moved. Have to use the Nova launcher.

Well on my phone everything has changed. Notification control is gone. the 3 bottom buttons are different, the icons suck, the settings and user controls are a disaster, many of my apps don't work anymore, the fingerprint sensor didn't recognize me, the google calendar has no type, no info, no nothing, the NOTIFICATIONS are totally screwed, the phone feels different, the gestures are off, the sensitivity is whacked, buttons don't work, I whack them repeatedly, I tap them assuredly, I beg them with my tips to WORK, but they just sit there like dumb, ineffective targets. And that's just off the top of my head.
OH - also ZERO explanations for ANYTHING!
I HATE IT. I'm so done with Android. Think about it - what if your toilet suddenly didn't flush the same...but no one told you...

@Promytius - understand that Android is SO MUCH MORE than Samsung (assuming you have a Samsung based on the timing of your post in relation to Samsung's Pie roll-out). Consider looking at other devices running Android and see how those manufacturers have modified the OS for their devices.

Google (Pixel), Motorola, HTC, LG all have varying degrees of manufacturer modifications, with Google being the lightest in that respect.

If you have a Pixel 2 or 2 XL (the forum section this thread is in), then maybe Android isn't for you?

Part of the problem for Promytius is that Samsung more often than not makes some goofs when rolling out major system updates to their phones, which is in large part due to the many modifications that are necessary to make things play nice with their own UI and ecosystem. The calendar problem is an example -- not being able to see the dates and events is a problem related to theming, and if you searched these forums, you'd find pretty quickly that the solution is to change the theme such that the text becomes more visible.

If you don't like the look of the icons, then it's a relatively simple matter of changing the theme to one that satisfies you, or installing a custom launcher that allows you to use any of the countless icon packs available on the Play Store. This is something you absolutely cannot do on iPhones, by the way.

When things act goofy after an update, it can sometimes help to wipe the cache partition. For Samsung phones, here are the steps: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-37180

WHAT NONSENSE!
Cannot shut off Google notifications!
Nor Pintrest.
nor email.

NOW I'm getting ghost notifications! Nothing in notifications, no system issues alerted, no messages open, no programs running.
But I still get Notifications.
Well at least I'm a part of history, receiving one of the worst "updates" in memory.

OH yeah and another thing: why in the name of everything sane, am *****I*****. me, why is it MY responsibility to fix their screw ups?
"do this" "follow these easy 45 steps"
Bull.
Crapware. Stupid release. Stupid decision. I don't CARE what fixes or hurts it, I just want to be able to use my damn phone! And it's not MY JOB to fix it, so stuff your "suggestions"

Are you having these issues on a Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL?

Hey, we're all just trying to help. No need to tell us what to stuff where.;)

Owhy is it MY responsibility to fix their screw ups?
How is their designing something you don't like their "screw up"? It's their opinion and, if you want to have a say in it, work for Google.

It's like refusing to vote because there are no good candidates, them complaining about the person who won.

If you're not part of the solution ... don't complain about the fact that someone fixed a problem their way.

Pretty sure it's a Samsung phone, given the complaint that text disappeared from the Calendar app -- a known bug with the Pie update on the S9 and Note9 that can be solved by changing the theme.

Mod note, please let's everyone take a step back and calm down. I understand that it can be frustrating but at the same time let's remember that no one here works for Google or Samsung nor do we represent them. The volunteers here try their best to help people but let's remember that they are volunteers and treat them with respect.
