I hate the Pie update.

I haven't had the issue with swiping up on Android once. In fact on my Pixel XL, I only have to lightly flick up and it'll correctly dismiss the selected app. I cannot say the same for when I used an iPhone X.

I don't have Pie yet, since I'm on a OnePlus 6, BUT I love the gestures that, the OP6 provides. Also I'm a recovering BlackBerry addict, and I loved the BB10 gestures. I'm sure I will like them on Pie!

Awful, the gestures are terrible so I switched back to the old way (hope Google doesn't do away with the three buttons in the future). The new swipe up to end apps is the worst thing in the world of Android mostly because if you don't go 90° straight up then you have to keep trying to close the apps. Straight garbage. Never been so disappointed before in an Android OS before. I may try and go back to Oreo.

GOOGLE STOP TRYING TO BE APPLE. APPLE IS TRASH FOR A REASON.

The rest is ok at best. But, for me, those two things out weigh the good.

I agree I never really enjoyed it. Definitely don't feel as strongly as you do about it though. And to be fair apple and google are both taking pages out of BlackBerry's book with their BlackBerry 10 operating system. That OS was so fluid with its swipe gestures it worked flawlessly. So much wasted potential.

Was different at first, felt weird. Tried switching back a week later andbwithin minutes it ckicked why buttons were not efficient. I now stuck to gesture and within the week it feels natural. Not a big deal you guys. If tech companies listen to people they would evovle products.

Liking Pie and gestures very much

The gestures are awesome! When I pick up my fiancé's phone (after asking his permission, of course), I try to use the Pie gestures on it already! The gestures are super easy to learn and I don't know how I managed without them! 😀

Quick Answers: Android Pie gestures HATED IT; OnePlus gestures BEST OF ALL; Xiaomi gestures REALLY GOOD TOO

I prefer gestures instead of the buttons because I had to really stretch my fingers until they hurt to do things one handed, just not Android Pie gestures. The reason why is you don't have to be as precise with gestures as you did with trying to peck at the software buttons below.

The new Android Pie gestures DO NOT make any sense to me. I hate Android Pie gestures and I hate how the recently opened apps are displayed. I hated that in iOS and now I hate it in Android. It is not easy finding an app that is 6 or 8 down the list, the Rolodex view was extremely easier to find apps especially if you had a lot open. Split screen and other options are hidden within each app's icon, gross, barf, vomit. There is no X to press and close out individual apps either, which made it easy to close out a bunch at once and fast. I hate the slider button that flies through the apps, it does not have good control, it swipes too fast or too slow. And, an old grip from me is why Android still will not allow us to natively swap the back button position to the right side of the screen. Being right handed, I used the Back button more often than the Recent button. I definitely will not be buying a Pixel phone if the next ones will be reliant on these horrible gestures and recently used apps displayed the way they are.

The only thing I like about Android Pie gestures is the swipe right in the navigation bar to switch between the last used app. It makes comparing information fast and easy. I like the Time on the upper left side of the screen.

In my opinion, OnePlus Oxygen gestures make total sense, they are the easiest to adapt to, easiest to remember, and are the BEST so far. Swipe up from Bottom on the Left or Right screen for Back, swipe up the middle to get Apps Drawer, swipe up and hold a second to get to Recent Apps. I love OnePlus gestures! Adding the Android Pie swipe right to access last used app would put the cherry on top.

Xiaomi MIUI gestures are really nice too and are the easiest for one handed use. The only difference between OnePlus gestures is to swipe from Left or Right side of screen for Back.

See phone gestures could be easy as pie, just not as confusing and convoluted as Pie.

Android Pie is merely the in between from Android Oreo to Android Q (10). No need to loVe or Hate the "middleman". The gesture-based navigation is fine, though still in need of tweaks & improvements--which is one of the reasons I/we loVe Android.

I love the gestures. Reminds me of webOS from Palm (which had excellent gestures, multitasking and UI).

easy to use and speeds up what I'm doing.

I upgraded to Pie about 4 days ago. I really don't notice anything different except when I pull down the menu from the top, the control icons are round circles.

What are these gestures everyone is talking about? Where / how do I swipe up?

Yeah I spent a fair amount of time trying to use the new gesture system and tried to like them, but I just couldn't.

They're far less efficient than the traditional 3 button layout.

1. The swipe up on homescreen to pull up the app drawer is a far larger swipe than traditional layout. You have to swipe up like ~40% of the screen to get to the app drawer. If you don't swipe high enough, it just goes to the multi-takser. The traditional layout just has a small swipe up ~10% of screen height to pull up the app drawer.

2. Swiping up from within an app to get the app drawer is even worse, requiring an ~80% swipe up the screen to pull up the app drawer. I can never seem to get this working consistently and it just ends up going to the multi-takser. So I end up just pressing the home button to go to the home screen, them swiping up to get the app drawer.

3. Swiping up to pull up the multi-takser is a slower process than tapping the square in the traditional layout. Requires more movement and my thumb has to stay on the screen longer to achieve the same outcome.

4. Swiping right on the pill to pull up the last app is also slower than double tapping the square multi-tasking button on the traditional layout. The animation is slower, it slides to the previous app, pauses just for a bit, then brings it to the foreground. Double tapping the square multi-tasking button on the traditional layout immediately brings in the last app to the foreground with no pause.

Other things I dislike:

- Android has moved to supposed gesture system, yet makes no savings in space at the bottom? The pill and back button still take up just as much room as the traditional layout.

- Why is the back button designed like that? It looks bad and the bottom of the UI looks lopsided with buttons in the centre and left, but nothing on the right side?

So basically the traditional 3 button layout is faster to use and feels better to use to me. Until Google go all in on gestures and makes something that actually feels great and is intuitive, I'll stick to the traditional layout. Maybe they should have a look at Apple and see how good their gestures are and try to implement something like that.

Go to settings -> system -> gestures -> swipe up on homescreen and turn it on

When do woman ask permission to look in their man's phone ..that's automatic 😋

Let me give you an example of why I close apps: when I'm working I need access to 4 apps on a continuous basis. So I go in and swipe away all the other apps (or simply 'Clear all' and then open the ones I need) so that when I use the 'Recents' button I can easily switch between the ones I need to utilize without all these other apps being in the queue. YMMV.
This makes sense, but if you have a lot of apps open, it makes sense to "close all" anyway, which is s straightforward tap. And an advantage of the current system is that it's a lot less likely that you will hit the wrong app when going through your open apps.

Edit: OK, losing the ability to swipe up anywhere on the home screen to get to the app drawer is a fail for me.
I have Nova with the new gestures enabled. That lets me do the swipe up for app draw or for "recent apps", depending on where I start the swipe from.

I agree. Definitely feels like a transitional year, IMO. I enjoy it, but there's definitely room to grow here.

IDK, I'm using the gestures the last couple of days and I guess it's fine with Nova but I still have to think about it. Maybe I'm getting old but I've always prided myself on my ability to be a fast learner and pickup things like this and it's just not happening. It just doesn't flow right.

I also hate the recent apps list still. This right to left crap is just weird and something always hated about iOS. I go past my apps more than I found the then I have to go back. Honestly maybe I should just go back to the buttons and not focus on the recent apps menu because I've never used it much other than for quick toggle between the last two apps.

I also think the "clear all" button should be at the front of the list where I can get to it easily instead of scrolling through the whole list. I always thought the same thing in the old vertical list too, "clear all" should be at the bottom where it's easy to reach.

Try the buttons for awhile

I was on them. I think I'm going back to them. I'm just not seeing the benefit. I mean the flick for recent quick toggle is a little quicker. And I do like scrolling through them with the pill but it's hard to control.

I do feel the same ..I'm on the buttons , I'll wait it out until they improve the gestures
