I have a Nexus 4, you have questions. Fire away.

Hi can anyone help me with my mobile network connection please?
I'm currently living in Canada and my cellphone provider is Wind Mobile. Every time I go on the skytrain I need to switch off my mobile networks but it's such a hassle and I sometimes forget. Wind sucks at getting signal in the skytrain stations, so I was wondering is there an app or feature to quickly switch my mobile networks on and off so I don't need to search for Wind Home every time I get out of the skytrain stations to find signal?

Thanks so much!

Llama is a perfect app for this.

I wish I could say it was a non issue for my Nexus 7, but that needed to be replaced for that very reason. So I was concerned because is was very frustrating. Hopefully, its an isolated issue and I will have better luck on my 4th Nexus, well that is to say if I can get one.

I'm sort of eying this phone and have a couple of questions:
Processor speed - all the questions I've seen seem to be about download and upload speed. Mine would be about databases. I have a rooted Nexus S, and birding apps. By the time the apps open, the bird has flown. How fast will apps like these be opened? The databases contain small JPGS and sound files, so there is a lot to load.

A reboot is the equivalent of a battery pull? My Nexus S has gotten stuck at times and even the power key won't work. I have to pull the battery. What do you do in that case? (not complaining, bought the phone used and it's been great)

What about apps you have bought? I have purchased a launcher, browser, keyboard, etc - can these be used rather than default? Evevryone just raves about the new stuff. I have ICS on an Acer 500, and you can disable much of the junk. Does the newer OS allow that?

How is the battery life now that some have had a chance to use it?

The camera looks pretty good. I had a Nokia C6 and found the 5MP camera on the Nokia superior to the 5MP camera on the S and SGS4G.

My S is rooted and running CM9. I'd probably root the phone anyway. Can you use an older ROM? I see that CM10 is out for the S, but everyone is just hung up on cosmetics and I can't find any sure postings about battery life and speed of opening apps. I don't care how fast it runs movies, or games. I don't do either. I don't download much over network, mostly wifi. I certainly don't want many of Google's services. As far as I'm concerned, the internet is one huge library and my phone is a library card.

TMO has improved services to where I go, so I don't even need GV anymore. The phones do not support UMA calling - at least the S doesn't.

Thanks

This phone is as fast as any phone available. Everything will be fast. Whether or not it can respond as fast as a bird would be subjective to the situation.

If you hold down the power key for 10 seconds it will force a reboot.

All of your apps are connected to your Google account so when you activate your phone they will be available in the play store. You can use all of your apps on this phone including your launcher etc.

Reviews have been rating it as average to good. There are some people with extreme highs and lows but generally you should be able to get a full day of moderate use.

Camera looks to be pretty good for most uses. Poor focus has been a comment I've read but the shots I've seen look pretty good.

This is the benefit of having a Nexus Device. You can do anything you like with it. I don't run custom Roms but I believe you can only run roms that are compatible with your device. But because it's a nexus you will have the best selection available.

Sorry I'm in Canada.

Hi All,

I am reporting back to answer my own question. That question was, "is there AVRCP 1.3+ support in the latest version of android?" I have finally received my Nexus 4, so here is the answer to the question:

The short answer is AVRCP 1.3+ is not supported by the latest version of android. I am a bit disappointed by this. Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 4 is the best phone I have ever owned, but not supporting such a basic feature is a bit shocking to me. Android is a fairly mature mobile OS. How is it that the last 3 versions of android have failed to update this profile standard?

For all of you who are wondering what AVRCP is, it stands for Audio/Video Remote Control Profile. Android seems to be stuck on version 1.0.

To quote Wikipedia:

AVRCP has several versions with significantly increasing functionality:

1.0?Basic remote control commands (play/pause/stop, etc.)
1.3?all of 1.0 plus metadata and media-player state support
The status of the music source (playing, stopped, etc.)
Metadata information on the track itself (artist, track name, etc.).
1.4?all of 1.0, 1.3, plus media browsing capabilities for multiple media players
Browsing and manipulation of multiple players
Browsing of media metadata per media player, including a "Now Playing" list
Basic search capabilities

The main issue for me is the metadata added in version 1.3. My car has a small screen that displays metadata about the currently playing song. This works great on my wife's Galaxy SIII (Or pretty much any other skinned version of android for that matter), but since I prefer to stick with the Nexus lineup, I have to forgo this feature. Anyone have ideas on how we can call attention to this? Should I make a thread?

Thanks for reading!

Hi everyone,

I've looked up pretty much every solution to SMS limit. What are your success stories to stop that dreaded message from popping up after too many SMS messages being sent? (Nexus 4 and 4.2.1. users please) I've already rooted my phone as well..

I'd love too know a fix for this as well. It drives me crazy.

Got one question, how fast is the music playing in google play (i mean online) are there any stutters?

Is there any way to get the stock Google Calendar to display/snooze while the phone is locked? And also to "light up" when a Calendar event notification happens? Sure, I can hear it vibrate if I'm close to my phone, but more often I'm not. And the LED at the bottom is weeeaakkk! :(

I could never get either to work on my Bionic with stock calendar as well, so I ended up adding Calendar Snooze from the playstore when I got the phone a year ago and seems to do the job. Still doesn't "light up" when the event notification happens, but when I unlock the phone, the snooze app is displayed so that I have to do something for it to go away.

If I have to download Calendar Snooze again, that's fine, but wish the stock Google Calendar worked/notified without having to get a 3rd party app. I did see via my computer and Google Calendar that there is a setting for "Notification" for mobile, but it's really a week pop-up.
Thanks!

It plays great for me. As long as you have a good data connection or wifi it plays smooth.

I never have any problems but that largely depends on where you are streaming your content from. If you are in a well covered area then you probably wont even notice that your streaming. If you know that you'll be out of a good coverage area you can always download some tunes to hold you over until you return to a week covered area.

Could you try and measure how much space is between the head of the 2 screws and the edge of the glass? Maybe how many thicknesses of paper you can slide between the side of the head and the glass? Thanks in advance.

Does the GPS work standalone, or do you have to have cell service to use GPS. For instance, if I wanted to use it essentially as a 4" tablet instead of putting a sim card in the phone, could I still use the GPS feature?

Can anyone drag and drop items from one menu to another? Every time I get to the edge it doesn't jump screen.

I am not sure what you mean by menu, but you can drag and drop icon/items from one home screen to another and if you drag them until they are on top of another icon/item then it creates a folder with both of the icons/item in it. Watch closely the edge will get a blue line on it just before changing screens, but you have to go all the way to the edge to do it.
