I need a new device, and I don't know which way to go

For anyone who has seen any of my recent posts and recalls, I am a long time user of the S21 Ultra. I've been using it since fall of 2022. I've recently had some pretty unfortunate circumstances, and my device is basically damaged beyond repair. At least a reasonably priced repair. Ubreakifix basically quoted me 600+ dollars to fix everything that is wrong with the device. I am definitely not paying that.

Honestly, if I could find an S21 Ultra for a decent price, I would buy another one. It's been a great device and honestly, it's basically tied with the Note 10 plus for me for the best devices I've ever used. Samsung currently has them refurbished at a base price for 749.00. They would be pretty cheap with a trade in promo, which I am actively looking at. There was a time where they were giving 350 for basically all trade in devices towards certain re-newed (refurbished) devices. That basically would bring the device down to 400, so around 450 after tax.

I've been looking at the S22U, the S23U and the S24+. I don't know which one would serve me best. If they bring back their trade in promotion, I could probably get a pretty decent deal on a 256gb model S23U. So many people seem to have issues with their S22U, but my wife has one and doesn't have any issues at all.

I've also looked at Swappa, and the seller I've used in the past has some pretty decent deals. The problem is, I really haven't had any luck long term with Swappa. I purchased a Note 9 in 2022 from there and a month later, it had a severe case of screen burn. I was lucky the seller sent me another one in exchange. I quickly sold it as to not deal with this kind of issue.
I could get a really good deal on a slightly older device, say for example, the S20+. It's currently 220 dollars in a mint condition. The problem is, I am worried I would get screen burn within a relatively short time frame again. I'd like a device that actually lasts me a few years with no issues.

I also have a Note 20 Ultra which I purchased from Amazon last May that was "Used, like new" condition. It now has light screen burn as well. So purchasing a device this old, unless it was actually refurbished officially by Samsung themselves, I don't really trust.

Any thoughts or advice? Should I get another S21U, or opt to wait until I can find good deals on the S22U or S23U? If Samsung brings back the "350" promotion for their re-newed devices, I could get a base model S23 Ultra for around 600-something, which wouldn't be too bad. I don't really care for the S24U personally, or even the S25U. There are various things that I don't like about either devices. I feel the S23 Ultra is the last device that is "Ultra," style that Samsung seems to have basically gotten just right.

If 600 is your 'still OK' price for an used model, why not look at the myriad of options for the newer phones? Some carriers are offering the S25 for free up to the Ultra for 300 or 400 bucks with 'any condition' trade-ins.

Here's what ChatGPT says:
It sounds like you're in a bit of a dilemma with your phone situation, especially given your past experiences with devices and the issues you've faced. Here are some thoughts and advice based on your situation:

  1. S21 Ultra: Since you've had a positive experience with the S21 Ultra, it might be worth considering getting another one, especially if you can find a good deal. If you can get it for around $400 after trade-in, that’s a solid price for a device you already know and like.
  2. S22 Ultra vs. S23 Ultra: The S22 Ultra has had mixed reviews, but if your wife hasn’t experienced any issues, it might be a safe option for you as well. The S23 Ultra, on the other hand, is generally regarded as a more refined device with better performance and camera capabilities. If you can find a good deal on the S23 Ultra, it could be worth the investment, especially if you plan to keep it for a few years.
  3. Trade-In Promotions: Keep an eye on Samsung’s trade-in promotions. If they bring back the $350 trade-in offer, it could significantly reduce the cost of a newer device. This could make the S23 Ultra a more appealing option.
  4. Swappa and Used Devices: Given your past experiences with Swappa and concerns about screen burn, it might be safer to avoid older used devices unless they come with a warranty or are certified refurbished. If you do consider Swappa again, look for sellers with high ratings and return policies.
  5. Refurbished Devices: If you’re leaning towards a refurbished device, make sure it’s from a reputable source. Samsung’s own refurbished devices often come with warranties, which can provide peace of mind.
  6. Longevity and Reliability: Since you’re looking for a device that will last a few years without issues, investing in a newer model (like the S23 Ultra) might be the best route. While it may cost more upfront, the improved technology and warranty could save you from potential headaches down the line.
  7. Personal Preferences: Ultimately, it’s important to choose a device that you feel comfortable with and meets your needs. If you have specific features or design elements you prefer, make sure to weigh those in your decision.
In summary, if you can find a good deal on the S21 Ultra or the S23 Ultra, either could be a great choice. Just keep an eye on promotions and consider the warranty and reliability of the device you choose. Good luck!
I'm not familiar enough with those phones to tell you if ChatGPT knows what she's talking about there.

Meh. I'm not sure. Sony devices seem to be pretty compelling. But, they don't seem to be cheap at all.
I may have mentioned the fact that my wife has the S22 ultra. If I can get one for a decent deal from Samsung.com, I may go this route. I'm pretty impressed with hers.
If Samsung brings back their 350 for any device, I could get an S22 ultra for around 500 bucks.
I think it would be a lot more advisable in my situation to either get an S22 ultra or S23 ultra.
But, we shall see.

The promo is on again with Samsung. Unfortunately, it's basically only limited to the S21 Ultra 128gb (which is the only variant they carry on this one), and the S22 Ultra 128gb.

I could get an s22 ultra for 530 after taxes, or an S21 ultra for 440. As much as I hate to say it, the S22 ultra is probably in terms of longevity the better choice. Though I have no need for the s-pen, and don't like the camera as much as on the S21U.
